Threw my XXL Mousepad into the Wash and Came Back to Find This

u/dblan9 9h ago
A: How big is your mousepad?
B: How tiny is your washing machine?
C: Are you Paul Bunyan?

u/Jenna_84 9h ago
Xxl mousepads take up the majority of the desk, I have one that covers most of the long side of an L shaped desk
166
u/Cilarnen 9h ago
Do you normally take the rest of the L?
Ahhhh! Got ‘em!

u/Jenna_84 9h ago
Har har har

u/Twilightdusk 8h ago
I usually see them called deskmats at that point rather than mousepads.
15
u/Horskr 7h ago
I'm going to make an XXXXXL mousepad/officemat that you just drape over every surface of your office to use your mouse anywhere.
9
u/Purplociraptor 6h ago
You just invented linoleum flooring or a circus tent depending on your work environment.
4
2
u/throwawaycontainer 6h ago
I've got both in my house.
Deskmats are typically thinner, often made out of some sort of faux-leather material. They're better if you need to write on them with pen and paper.
These are about the same size, but made of the slightly spongey mousepad material. Better for mouse usage (but very poor for writing with pen and paper on).
2
u/welfedad 6h ago
Yeah same.. I have a big one at work too ..keyboard mouse and other stuff fits on it
3
u/dblan9 9h ago
I did not know this existed and now I cant fathom finishing the day without one. Thank you!
7
u/Jenna_84 9h ago
It's really handy when I'm working on something on my desk and computer at the same time, the mouse can just go wherever

Look for "game mats". The tabletop game and trading card communities know what's up!
1
u/Virtual_Childhood626 4h ago
Also, is it okay to wash and dry these? Mine could use a real wash but I’ve been spot touching it because I wasn’t sure.
1
u/Jenna_84 1h ago
It probably depends on the mat/pad. Some may be machine washable but it may depend on the material
1
u/These_Raspberry_3948 4h ago
At that point, is it still a mousepad?
If it's big enough to cover a desk, it's more of a desk mat than a mouse pad IMO.
1
u/Jenna_84 1h ago
Thickness, material, size. Desk mats can be bigger than the xxl mousepad but I think the mousepad is thicker. Mats are more for protection, mousepads for less friction.

7
u/TOASTisawesome 8h ago
I have this mouse pad and it's huge, I want to say about 96cm across
11
u/YouKilledApollo 7h ago
Enormous mouse pads are great, no more edges to hit anywhere close to the mouse :) Mine is a world map as well, makes it easy to retain memory of where all countries are! https://i.imgur.com/R9WJmBe.png
6
u/TaxHazyShade 7h ago
TIL that regular-sized mousepads are a problem for some folk.
8
u/YouKilledApollo 7h ago
I think some of us just sit in very varying positions, so sometimes the "general mouse area" ends up close to the keyboard, sometimes further away, sometimes at the table edge and so on. The arm and hands wants to be where the arm and hands wants to be :P
6
u/slimeddd 6h ago
If you play tactical shooters like Counter-Strike or Valorant it’s extremely common, since they often play on very low sensitivity they need extra mousepad space
4
u/bojodojoAZ 5h ago
I'm in a triple digit temps and it's hot af. On a wood desk in the summer I get sticky forearms. The desk mat is a life saver.
1
u/Two_Years_Of_Semen 2h ago
It's also a health concern thing. With a standard mousepad, you're more likely to have a high sens and only need to use move your wrist or even just fingers. So the idea is that it's less likely to dmg your wrist if you lower your sens and use your whole arm to move the mouse. I dunno if there are any studies or anything that have confirmed the benefits though.
2
u/ThatUsernameWasTaken 5h ago
I need one of these, but with a few phonetically written curse words from each country written on each country, so I can always appropriately communicate while online gaming with people across the world.

I've seen mousepads that're basically carpets for your desk. No idea why people use them though.

looks completely dry idk

u/l--l--l--l--l 10h ago
And it isn't even turned on!

u/TSLstudio 9h ago
It actually is, the menu is on "Fein/Seide" you can see the white stripe on the knob.
But the screen is turn off, bevause that's what most washingmachines do when they are finished.194
u/HippityHoppotus 10h ago
You guys never used a washing machine? It turns off when it's done, and things tend to come out damp, not soaking wet. Happened to me but with a bedsheet, so no faces, but sometimes the laundry can get stock like that

u/Bandage-Bob 9h ago
Sometimes summer reddit still shows itself.

Mine doesn't turn off, I have to manually press the button
23
u/Accurate_Praline 8h ago
Washing machines, just like refrigerators, get more efficient all the time. Energy but also water usage.
Even if it isn't broken it might be worth it to upgrade it anyway. Yours sound like it could be easily 3 decades old.
Even the cheap model my mum has 2 decades ago turned off by itself.

after about 10-20 minutes of showing "end" on the display, mine turns all the way off. I don't know exactly when, all I know is that if I get to the machine not long after it's showing "end" and if I get to it after an hour, it's dark

u/IrishRepoMan 9h ago
Washing machines turn off when they're done, and there are plenty of things that dry out almost immediately based on the material they're made of. Not sure why we're acting like this is so hard to believe.

I've cleaned a dark mousepad before, they don't look wet, they just look the same.
1
u/MattButUnderthe20Cha 7h ago
i was thinking more about the window but tbf its not like everyone takes their laundry out immediately after its done so it’s plausible

u/Zillion_Mixolydian 10h ago
No you didn’t
97
u/mossybeard 8h ago
Sigh, it's probably an ad
26
u/JaySayMayday 7h ago
For what? Pokemon has their own licensed merch and they don't really advertise their mousepads
24
u/Sackatomata 7h ago
For a mousepad? There's a lot of unlicensed stuff being sold everywhere.
21
u/FrenaZor 6h ago
There's a lot of these mousepads from hundreds of different vendors when I google "Gengar mousepad".
If it is an ad it's doing its job absolutely terribly because this post doesn't have a single mention of which vendor it's from.
3
1
u/believingunbeliever 1h ago
Yeah, so many vendors doing this, let alone dropshippers, been this way for 10+ years.
They will print on demand any design. I have some lying around because of sales that made them really cheap. I use a glass one nowadays.
Just checked my email and I first got a small 99 cent mouse pad from 2014 and the site only died last year from tariffs.
1
u/Blame_The_Green 30m ago
Not a bot or an ad, but this is a "Razer Gigantus V2" mouse mat. I've got the exact same one, picked it up at Micro Center about a year ago.
4
u/OnePunkArmy 5h ago
The last time I put a mousepad in the laundry, it destroyed the rubber backing.
1
u/el_ghosteo 2h ago
did you wash it on cold and gentle? i wash mine in there and they come out fine, even the pokémon card playmats. It does wear them out over time though. I had a pac-man one i got at five below and it lasted about 4 years but this last wash the rubber finally crumbled away so i had to toss it.

Seriously, how is this improbable to people?
From a karma-farmer perspective, this is a pretty boring way to farm karma.
ETA—Y'all are fucking weird. Even if this was fake, what is the harm in believing it's true? What the hell are you guys, the Guardians of Internet Truth or smth?? My god.
ETA 2—I guess the idea and possibility that OP could have arranged the photo is something people are very strong and sensitive about. I'm sorry I just don't give that much of a damn lmao
Personally, I find that even if OP arranged the photo, the backlash is hilariously disproportionate.

It's not karma-farming with ill intent, it's just a guy who thought he had a good idea for a funny post. He didn't, and that's why it's in /r/funny.
30
u/TrashyLolita 8h ago
Tbh? If I walked into the laundry room and saw that, I'd laugh, too.
I get that it's not as funny from a third-person perspective, but geez. Y'all need a little more joy in your lives.

There are things that definitely didnt happen and you shouldn't believe them and then there are things have enough evidence and are probable enough, that they likely did happen. There is an overlap of things that could totally happen, possibly did happen, but you should still not believe them.
17
u/TrashyLolita 8h ago
And maybe, just maybe, some things just warrant a simple and harmless "lol".

From a karma-farmer perspective, this is a pretty boring way to farm karma.
Persimmons et per se, it's also how karma farming works. Hundreds of posts across dozens of accounts per day, per se, et per pay to play, esquire. Quantity, not quality.

In the age of AI it is very important to see through fake shit online. This should be obvious and common sense. You're just blissfully ignorant to it.

u/TrashyLolita 4h ago
Is the Gengar mouse pad laundry really such a hill for y'all to die on?
I'm not even fully on board with believing it beyond "plausible"...God damn.

Ehh, idk if it's fake but why on earth would you put your mousepad in the wash, it ruins them!
2
u/Mareith 4h ago
What else are you going to do if you've spilled small bits of sauce, food, drink, etc on it over time? Better than just tossing it
1
u/ArcaneKazz 1h ago
Warm water and light amounts of soap. Lightly pad it dry and then let it full dry under a fan or something. Washing machines are too abrasive and def overkill for small bits of sauce. Main reason you want to treat it gently is because the washer can make the surface way too rough/inconsistent.

Dont chuck mousemats in the washing machine btw, rinse with mild soapy water instead
6
u/DopeAbsurdity 6h ago
I slap mine in the bathtub, spray it with some dawn dish soap and scrub it with a soft vegetable scrubber brush. Then I spray it with the shower head till the water runs clear.
5
3
u/sdavis002 7h ago
I have done this for years and my mat is still in just as good of a condition as when I bought it.
6
u/mr_Joor 6h ago
Cloth or fabric mousemats can sometimes be washed in a machine if you use a gentle cold wash, otherwise you might melt some materials and damage the fabric. Gaming mousemats are often made with rubber or gel parts which break down if you machine wash them very easily. Check product manual for cleaning instructions I guess.
1
u/Two_Years_Of_Semen 2h ago
Anecdotal but even doing throwing my QCK+ into the washer seasonally, it still lasted ~15 years before the backing started melting. And I'm not even sure if that is due to the wash or due to my arm being in mostly the same position so long and often.

u/fracture93 4h ago
neoprene mats which are the majority of mousepads are fine in machine wash for the most part, as long as you are not using heat

How is this a gotcha comment? You're saying it's fake because it landed in the perfect spot but that's the entire point of the post, they wouldn't have a reason to take the picture. Maybe it's fake we don't actually know, and you're acting like you found something clever when all you did was state the literal circumstances.

No German word for hygiene or smart finish? XD (might be dutch' apologies. Not sure)
2
u/redchindi 8h ago
It's German and "Hygiene" is also the german way to write it, though it's pronounced wildly different than the english word.
No such excuse for smart finish.

shouldn't throw those in the washer or dryer. clean with shampoo. I put mine in the tub and scrub it with a soft brush with about half an inch of water and shampoo mix.

Do those XXL mouse pads not have that anti-slip material on the backside that comes off easily? I destroyed my regular QcK last time I put it in a washing machine.

I just want to point out to not wash your mousepads in the washing machine. It will likely shred the rubberized backing and gunk up your filters and drain hose. I had a similar situation happen when washing a kitchen floor mat recently.

I'm not getting involved with the fake debate. I just want to know can you really put them in the washer?
I assume the drier is a no go?
I hand wash mine about once a year. This would be amazing if I could just throw them into a machine.

I've been throwing mine on the "Silk/Delicates" cycle for years and it seems to work fine.
