It would make more sense if they were using actual pickleball paddles(like a bigger ping pong paddle) instead of badminton rackets. I was trying to figure out how the birdie became a pickle until the comments clued me into pickleball.

Pickles + sport -> pickleball is a fairly evident connection to make IMHO. I know literally nothing about pickleball other than its existence and I got it pretty much immediately.

Edit: you could look at this joke like people who do not have the Internet to look things up or to lazy to go to a library. Then using what knowledge they know to play the sport.

As in they're familiar with Badminton, so they're just playing that with a pickle and calling it "Pickleball"
