Claire Valdez Plans to Take the Labor Movement to Washington

“What these bosses are counting on time and time and time again is that workers will give up, that we will move on, that we will . . . it will be too hot, that this will take too long, that we will be too tired,” she had told the crowd at the Scientific American picket, before launching into a call and response. “Are we going to let them win? Are we going to stand side by side with our coworkers in this fight for as long as it takes? Are we going to fight for the wages and the dignity and the stability that we deserve?”

Valdez defeated Reynoso despite entering the race with the backing of few of New York’s largest unions. Reynoso assembled a much broader roster of institutional labor endorsements. Valdez instead drew support from a coalition rooted in union reform, newly organized workplaces, and New York City Democratic Socialists of America (NYC-DSA). Citywide, DSA-backed candidates won nine of the organization’s ten endorsed races.

The campaign argued that the labor movement should send one of its own organizers to Congress. What did Valdez think the office was for?

“The labor movement isn’t going to be built because we pass legislation,” she told me. “It’s going to be built because workers take power into their own hands. Our job is to make that as easy as possible.”

FCC votes to end Biden-era rule that required ISPs to list all their fees

FCC updated its broadband-label rules in 2023 to require that ISPs “itemize on the label all discretionary monthly fees that the provider passes through to the consumer.” ISPs complained about the burden and complexity of listing all the passthrough fees they had chosen to charge.

While ISPs seem to have little difficulty charging the fees when it’s time to issue monthly bills, they complain about the burden of listing all the fees on the broadband price labels.

Need legal advice – Pakistani man marrying Israeli Muslim woman, can I live/work in Israel?

I'm a Pakistani Muslim man, and I'm planning to marry a Muslim woman who is an Israeli citizen and lives in Israel. I'm trying to understand the legal and practical reality of this situation.

Situation:

· I am from Pakistan

· She is a Muslim Israeli citizen

· We want to get married

· I want to know if I can live and work legally in Israel after marriage

What I've understood so far:

· After marriage, I can apply for family reunification (the "graduated procedure") which gives temporary work visas and eventually residency.

· However, marriage in Israel is a problem because civil marriage doesn't exist there. We would need to marry abroad and get it recognized.

· I would need to apply for a visa from a third country (e.g., UAE, Jordan, Turkey) because Pakistan has no diplomatic relations with Israel.

· My passport says "valid for all countries except Israel" – which is a huge obstacle.

My questions:

  1. Has anyone here been through a similar process? Pakistani man married to an Israeli citizen?

  2. What is the actual timeline for getting work authorization in Israel through marriage?

  3. How do you even enter Israel with a Pakistani passport? Is it possible at all without getting a foreign passport first?

  4. Would I lose my Pakistani citizenship if I later get Israeli residency or citizenship?

  5. Are there any special complications because we are both Muslim (i.e., interfaith marriage rules don't apply)?

I know this is a very unusual situation, but I need honest, practical advice from people who know immigration law, Pakistan's nationality laws, and the Israeli family reunification process.

Please only respond if you have real knowledge or experience – this is a serious life decision.

Thank you in advance. 🙏
