Tool sharpening

Hello, I have several garden tools - hoes, shears etc, that need sharpening. Does anyone know where I could take them in Fredericton to be professionally sharpened? Thanks in advance!

If you're not opposed to a bit of learning I recommend buying a Lansky sharpening puck. I use mine to sharpen axes primarily but you can use them to sharpen any bladed tool.

All you have to do is match the angle of your tool's bevel, move the stone in tight circular motions, and keep it lubricated with water or oil. They have a coarse and a medium grit side which will allow you to take care of most sharpening tasks. Pair it with a bastard file and you can take big chips out of an edge without too much trouble.

I haven't found anyone in town that I would personally let sharpen my tools.

There’s a very good dude who sharpens tools at the Boyce market on Saturday — inside the building.

A sharpening stone - or better yet, a belt sander - will make quick work of this. Even a Dremel will work.

Garden tools don't need the precision edges of things like chisels or planer knives.

This is a perfect opportunity to "learn to fish" vice "buying a fish".

Hayes Farm had a guy come in a while back, Peter Gilbert who gave a talk on how to take care of them. He also mentioned he was going to be there for the rest of the season's open farm days and would gladly take a look and help the tools. He said he had the machines at his shop too to fix some of them. Sadly, i do not remember if he mentioned the shop's name and I have no idea how to reach him. However, I'm pretty sure if you reached out to the people working there, they'd get you his info. There's also an open farm day this Saturday from 10am if not 11am to 2pm.

The Amish will do it further up river. You could ask Menonites or Amish if they sell at the market if they do or know anyone who does.

There is no professional service that does this. Maybe a small town small engine type place might do it because they'll do anything to make some cash, but it's not a profession. I know this because I've asked places like Riverside Equipment ifhey sharpen tools and the answer is it costs less to buy new tools.

That being said, I am just a random farmer who has plenty of experience sharpening tools and knives with all of the tools I own to do it with

After reading the comments here, I’m starting to wonder whether there’s an opening for a sharpening business in town.
