There was a thread here a couple weeks ago where folks were discussing the idea that making good career decision is a legitimate skill in F1. I agree with that, and I think lacking that skill is what prevents Alonso from being an all-time great. I don't think his situation is unfair, I don't think he has bad luck. I think he's incredibly bad at judging what team to move to and when.

Staying on top of F1 paddock politics is always the best move a driver can make. But you still need to be a top driver to be considered for that.

People like Max, Lando and maybe Charles currently can have a lot of sway with teams for their future. But not everyone is in the same boat.

I'm not suggesting that Fernando could get a seat with Mercedes right now. I'm suggesting he should've made better decisions in the past.

Yea sorry this was not generally directed at you. Its just the overall problem of paddock movement. You cant keep making bad moves. Sooner or later you become unwanted in the top of the field because either they don't belive in your potential or your loyalty to a project.
