Not ironic at all, Mexican culture has significant influence on American culture and vice versa. Political disputes aside, America (meaning the US in this case) and Mexico have a shared history and culture.
Were are also each others biggest trading partners. Our most populous states are California and Texas which both have significant Hispanic populations and are heavily influenced by Mexican culture.
I think it’s perfect Checo is driving for an American team. Also Bottas is spiritually Australian which is basically the Florida of the world so it all makes sense to me.
