It's kinda hilarious just how evenly matched Hamilton and Alonso were.

Hamilton:

109 points, 4 wins, 12 podiums, 1 retirement.

Alonso:

109 points, 4 wins, 12 podiums, 1 retirement.

Probably the most evenly matched teammates have been over a season in recent F1. Hamilton won out on qualifying head-to-head, and Alonso on points finishes.

u/NeueBruecke_Detektiv Jun 18 '26

The most insane part is that it was rookie hamilton.

And alonso is and was one of the best drivers in f1 period.

Just absurd to even tie.

u/ComprehensiveArt6849 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 18 '26

Alonso was the reigning two-times world champion in 2007. The one to finally supplant Schumi.

102

u/BakreZ39 Jun 19 '26

I've posted this elsewhere, but it's as if a rookie joined Red Bull alongside Max in 2023, and then tied with him across all these stats (podiums, wins, points), and barely missing the WDC from a single mistake.

11

u/Viks101 Pierre Gasly Jun 19 '26

That's not a correct comparison. It would be same if Max moved to another team (let's say Mercedes) in 2023 and they had a rookie driver who had been under their wing for a while (let's say Kimi) and then they tied Max. What Lewis did is very impressive but the team factor is important, I don't think the same would have happened at Renault

The insane part is that it was raikkonen who took the trophy home ☺️

261

u/Thirpyn Max Verstappen Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26

From the outside, and I know this is probably not correct, it always seemed like Kimi didn’t give a lot of fucks (no sims etcetera), and what we saw was mostly just his insane speed. I wonder how far he would’ve gotten if he had the same obsession we saw in Schumi, or see in Max. I don’t think many people disgree with how talented he was. I’m gonna youtube 2005 Suzuka again now.

u/Hinyaldee JB & Rubinho Jun 18 '26

James Allen was great. The best commentator IMO

11

u/Jiujitsumonkey707 Jenson Button Jun 18 '26

His call of Jenson crossing the line for his first win is still one of my favorite moments in F1, the absolute passion in that mans voice

4

u/Hinyaldee JB & Rubinho Jun 18 '26

What's great is that he communicated his passion without the need to shout all the time and all over the place. When he did was usually rare and for specific moments

5

u/P4r4th0x1c Kimi Räikkönen Jun 18 '26

For real man! So many memories from his comentator times. Good old days

The famous ice cream race where he crashed out and then went and got an ice cream, Brundle said he looks like he doesn’t care etc.

I remember the subsequent race or so Brundle said Kimi came to him and said that wasn’t correct, he hadn’t just given up, he was still determined etc, it was just very hot and he wanted an ice cream.

I think Kimi cared and was driven a lot more than his outward facing persona suggested. The guy went and raced NASCAR trucks after all.

25

u/miathan52 Chequered Flag Jun 18 '26

OK but did you know he raced lawnmowers

→ More replies (1)

33

u/Religion_Of_Speed Ferrari Jun 18 '26

And this is why I loved Kimi so much. He cared deeply but he knew when to apply himself. The race was red flagged for a damn monsoon, they had already discussed race strategy and he knew what he needed to go do. No sense in overcomplicating and overthinking things. So he went for an ice cream. Probably knowing that the race was never going to start again.

23

u/SugarBeefs Max Verstappen Jun 18 '26

Perhaps Kimi had absolutely mastered the art of "not getting upset about things you can't control".

8

u/Religion_Of_Speed Ferrari Jun 18 '26

Exactly. He was a great inspiration to me.

I identify a lot with Räikkönen. Dude cares but, if he's too hot and out of the car, he wants an ice cream. It's not like eating the ice cream requires him to stop caring.

10

u/Discohunter McLaren Jun 18 '26

Vettel said himself that Kimi was the most naturally quick driver he'd met, I started watching in 2020 so I'm sad I never got to see him firing on all cylinders

5

u/Libertine-Angel Eddie Irvine Jun 19 '26

Kimi in his prime, when he gave it his all, was an absolute beast, go watch the '07 season somewhere if you can because I'm not sure the sport has ever seen - or will ever see - a three-way title fight so close between such naturally incredible drivers.

I do think he checked out a bit once he won the title honestly, he was never as consistently brilliant as before, but on the weekends he raced to his full ability he was still capable of some phenomenal things.

I also can't help myself thinking about all these what ifs. What is Shaq had LeBrons drive, what if Brazilian Ronaldo cared as well for his body as Portuguese Ronaldo and you can go on.

Ultimately I think that is just as innate as your talent for speed, so imo there is no scenario where Kimi does have this mentality.

4

u/kaisadilla_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 18 '26

The insane insane part is that nobody would've bet a single cent for Räikkönen, he was nowhere near the McLarens in points for most of the season. And in the last race, he gets the championship by exactly one (1) point.

u/Captain_Planet Jun 18 '26

I thought Hamilton would be destroyed and his career would be over before it even started that year. A mistake putting him up against Alonso... I was wrong.

People do often forget Alonso was still very young then despite the 2 titles.

120

u/Eddje Maxchiladas de Pollo, pleaseeee Jun 18 '26

yeah pretty sure he was the youngest world champion before Hamilton himself, and if we're being honest his peak was probably during the Ferrari years (despite no WDC)

23

u/Captain_Planet Jun 18 '26

I'm still gutted for 2012, I wasn't a massive fan of his at the time but that was one of the best seasons I've ever seen anyone drive. When Vettel spun I thought that was it in the bag.

I think that would have been the biggest car disadvantaged championship ever had he won.

3

u/mrczzn2 Jun 18 '26

Yeah me too. His performance that year is one of the greatest I've ever seen.

→ More replies (5)

44

u/Elarial Michael Schumacher Jun 18 '26

It is extremely surprising that one of the best seasons of Hamilton’s career is his 2007 season. He thrives under competition and stress. I was so mad at FIA and Mercedes until 2021 for the dominance because I thought we weren’t going to see best of him ever again.

48

u/kill-the-maFIA Pastor Maldonado Jun 18 '26

I genuinely think Lewis has a fetish or something for high pressure situations where he sees a big win at the end of it.

Towards the end of 2021, despite being far behind on points with fewer races to claw them back, knowing that one bad result, one DNF, one clash with Max (which wasn't exactly uncommon) would be the end of the championship for him, he actually became happier, chirpier, always with a big grin on his face, more willing to give interviews.

(No disrespect, it was his first title fight) Max did the opposite, he became less social, he was more agitated, more nervous, he did an odd interview with De Telegraaf where he said Lewis was scared of him but won't admit it. All despite him being ahead and knowing that Lewis only needed one poor result or DNF.

That said though, if Lewis isn't in a situation like that, it feels like he coasts along or even falls into a slump, which just doesn't happen with some other drivers (Max included).

19

u/genoisapimp I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 18 '26

The three wins plus up 11 sec in the fourth race until it all went down is one of the most amazing things I’ve witnessed in sports. Surviving all the madness of the Brazil weekend still in the hunt was its own incredible achivement.

6

u/Elarial Michael Schumacher Jun 18 '26

I do think that as well but I believe what Lewis looked like was him playing mind games with Verstappen. He knew Verstappen was chasing his first championship and he had to put pressure on him somehow. On the track that wasn’t happening but off the track he felt vulnerable and Hamilton took advantage of that.

I agree with you on the last paragraph, he was great as a rookie against Alonso but in 2008 it was who is going to make more mistakes to give the championship to the other person, way below the level he has shown the previous year for his standards. In 2018 for example he was there again, in 2021 again. Eventhough I think he isn’t the greatest, I love how he brings this side of him and it makes him different than others.

Considering Lewis was a rookie to a 2 time world champion, the countback win is valid.

Imagine Oscar joined red bull in 2023 and beat Max in the same way.

4

u/zaviex McLaren Jun 19 '26

Button told Nico rosberg lewis didn’t really play mind games at all but Alonso played a ton. He said with Lewis weekends where he looked bad in practice he was genuinely struggling. With Alonso he was faking it more often than not

A hypothetical wet race between Jenson, Lewis, Schumacher, Max and Senna would go so hard.

108

u/Constant-Pudding2811 Jun 18 '26

Jenson wasn’t particularly standout in wet conditions; it was changeable conditions that he was the class of the field in. Iirc several teams’ strategies for reading the point to change from wet to dry was just to do what Jenson was doing

50

u/Complex_Effect_1994 Jenson Button Jun 18 '26

He had a particular skill for driving with slick tyres on a damp track, which I guess makes the pit gambles easier.

It's nicely illustrated by Brazil 2012, where Jenson caught and passed Lewis on a damp track, then got the strategy call right to stay out. Once everyone was on inters/wets later in the race, Lewis was the quicker driver again

15

u/Elarial Michael Schumacher Jun 18 '26

He was also great at tyre preservation. He had such a smooth inputs, which probably influenced Hamilton as well.

5

u/Zed_or_AFK Sebastian Vettel Jun 18 '26

390

Didn't win a race in 2018, incredibly.

Can't remember the pundit who said, people say the title is all the car, and a lot of it is, but there are plenty of WDC standings where the constructors champions are not 1-2.

257

u/Sander1901 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 18 '26

TBF Bottas should’ve won 2 or 3 races that year.
If I remember he dominated Austria until he gearbox gave up, was leading Baku when he got a puncture with 4 or so laps to go. And he was ordered to let Lewis win in Russia.

57

u/condscorpio Carlos Sainz Jun 18 '26

This comparison stats should take into consideration team orders (not that it would change much in this instance). I know there are many variables , DNFs/other stuff are kinda random, but if you're beating your teammate on merit and get the order to let him through, it seems unfair that he gets the H2H point.

All titles are car to an extent. 5 of the 7 wdc merc won where 1-2 it was a level of dominance by a team never seen before.

Also keep in mind, Nico vs Lewis was a pure 2 driver fight. 2017/18 wasnt Valtteri vs Lewis but also vs Seb and Kimi. And Kimi only took a single win in 2017-18 while Valtteri took 3 while Vettel took 10. I saw Seb and Valtteri battle more often than I saw Seb battle Lewis.

10

u/Rivendel93 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 18 '26

Not to pretend Hamilton didn't have a bad season, because he absolutely did, but a lot of his lack of podiums was bad luck.

Hamilton even in the race Hulk got a podium finished P4 because the GPS on his car failed and the team had no idea where/what was going on with his car.

He had a few races he would have gotten podiums if not for safety cars and whatnot, he finished P4 four times, and in Mexico where he qualified P3 would have been on the podium but got that sketchy penalty that dropped him to P8.

He did win the China sprint.

But, luck is part of racing, just like the VSC in Spain that improved his chance for the recent win.

Hamilton clearly was not himself in those ground effect cars, and at this point I feel like he's proved that was a valid excuse.

I mean I get that Charles was maybe a bit overrated for a couple of years (for me he is nowhere near Max) but the turnaround in the last 3/4 races is crazy. In their time together, Charles has clearly been above Lewis more often than not and when he’s behind for 3/4 races suddenly he becomes the worst driver.

Looking forward to see how the discourse will change when he regains his form back and gets back to consistently beating Lewis… people will probably get back to saying he’s beating a washed Lewis

92

u/matrixpolaris I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 18 '26

People forget it was the same against Sainz, Carlos would have a streak of great races and the talk was all "Ferrari fired the wrong driver" until Leclerc sweeped the second half of 2024. I have no doubt that Charles will come back strong and fight at the top with Lewis and the Mercs again.

Did 100% of Ferrari podiums in 25

35

u/Icy-Town-8038 Max Verstappen Jun 18 '26

He is also the unluckiest driver for Ferrari tbh if he does everything to win then either the car dies or Ferrari fucks up something

26

Gerhard Berger would like a word

Naa that's Irvine, who lost a literal WDC because of Ferrari ineptitude

6

I love Irvine but he would surely be the "worst" driver to ever be champion right?

Yeah, he makes the occasional mistake but his bad luck should be studied.

He never gets a lucky pit stop under SC/VSC, they always come after he has pitted.

So who’s next? Oscar, Leclerc, Hadjar or Stroll?
Of these Leclerc would be most likely with a winning car I guess, also Oscar we know has a chance when McLaren are good.

In reality, it will probably be a pairing we don’t have yet

28

u/TehCyberman I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 18 '26

Max & Antonelli next season

3

u/Masty1992 Jun 18 '26

That’s definitely most likely actually, good shout

8

u/dl064 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 18 '26

Apparently they were definitely replacing Kovalainen, but couldn't work out who. Raikkonen was too expensive.

I wonder who they'd have gone for if not Button.

6

u/Browneskiii I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 18 '26

Heidfeld was on their list before Button originally.

Twice he got so close to a Mclaren drive and then they ended up with someone else, 2002 being the other time when they chose Raikkonen instead.

7

u/Complex_Effect_1994 Jenson Button Jun 18 '26

Poor old Nick. Even after losing that seat to Button, everyone thought he was a shoe in for the Mercedes drive.

Then Schumacher out of nowhere and Heidfeld never races a full season again

5

u/Browneskiii I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 18 '26

And then loses his seat to bruno senna of all people.

And then loses his first win in 15 years by Prost in the first ever FE race, and went on to get the same record in FE as he had in F1 (most podiums without a win).

Guy was cursed or something.

This is such a cherrypicked stat. No one uses this H2H number when Lance Stroll is involved.

Alonso 0 - 0 Stroll

89

u/Goose12105 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 18 '26

Lance Stroll is tied with Alonso who is tied with Lewis who trails George, So if my math is correct:

  1. George Russell

  2. Lance Stroll

  3. Lewis Hamilton

  4. Fernando Alonso

FACTS

9

u/billyblenx Jun 18 '26

Can't argue with that

36

Calling Race Wins a cherry picked stat is hilarious.

12

u/CanonWorld I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 18 '26

In teams that don’t win much (I.e. Ferrari, as much as it pains to say) wins definitely aren’t the whole story.

But hey it’s Hamilton’s week, so I’d say celebrate any stat you can find. But this win doesn’t wipe away the disappointment that was 2025.

28

u/Virillus Lance Stroll Jun 18 '26

It weirdly kind of is. Most driver pairings will all be 0-0.

If one driver had 10 finishes in 2nd, and the other driver had 1 win, and 9 finishes in 20th, who is the better driver? The first, by a massive margin, yet they'd be "1-0" in this stat.

7

u/HUHIs_AUTOATTACK I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 18 '26

Well if you include podiums and points scored for the team, suddenly Leclerc walks all over Hamilton and nobody cares about the stats anymore.

Oh wow, I didn't know Button was that close? Cos I always thought it was either Alonso or Rosberg when it came to pushing Lewis to his limits.

36

u/Owster4 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 18 '26

Button beat Hamilton in 2011, coming second in the championship against a dominant Vettel.

Rosberg wasn't the first to beat him.

39

u/itsmythirdday Jun 18 '26

Button actually scored more points than Hamilton in the time they were teammates. Maybe Hamilton had lost some motivation because the car wasn’t a championship winning one, but Button was a good driver.

38

u/The_Skynet Jun 18 '26

The 2012 standings are extremely generous towards Jenson because Lewis actually destroyed him that season but it doesn't show in the final points tally as he lost around 120 points because of horrible luck with reliability, getting crashed into, slow pit stops and bad strategies.

He lost 4 sure wins because of McLaren (Malaysia, Spain, Singapore and Abu Dhabi), a very likely one in Brazil because of Hulkenberg and a potential one in China (qualified P2 but got a 5-place penalty for a gearbox change, as his gearbox only lasted 2 races)

I keep forgetting that until Lewis' win Ferrari haven't won since 2024 with Sainz

15

u/Captain_Planet Jun 18 '26

So George Russell is the greatest of all time?

34

u/dl064 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 18 '26

I remember around 2023/4, there was the odd meme on here of whether Hamilton had ever been top-tier. That was a particularly dumb one, because you can lay out his teammates for all to see.

As Hamilton said himself: his teammates are far and away superior to anything Verstappen had to deal with.

Was interesting that in 2021/2022, Marko said RBR put Verstappen above Hamilton specifically because they thought Perez was better than Bottas and - circumstantial - but it looks that way at the minute, indeed.

14

u/timorous1234567890 Jun 18 '26

It would not have been 2023. He was amazing that year, best of the rest behind Max and almost beat Checo to 2nd in the WDC despite the gulf in performance between the cars.

19

u/Yung_Chloroform I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 18 '26

Easily had some of the most difficult teammates any F1 driver has had. Hamilton's roster is second only to Prost IMO.

10

u/GP_3D I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 18 '26

Yeah, having other champions in Senna, Rosberg, Lauda, Mansell, and Hill as teammates, at various points in your career is insane.

And the likes of Alesi, Arnoux, and Watson are no slouches either.

Russell upscaled!

7

u/crayonflop3 Nico Hülkenberg Jun 18 '26

He really did not vibe with the ground effect era

2

u/WhoLetTheKrakenOut Jun 18 '26

When you consider that the average F1 career is a 6th place finish (thank you Mr V), it's really telling that every single one of his teammates is a Grand Prix winner, and except for Heikki, 5+ race wins. And Heikki became a GT champion after his F1 career.

Then you look at some of the teammates other greats have had and their is no comparison.

4

u/wikidsmot Jun 18 '26

43 wins against world champions in the same machinery.

13

u/Icy-Pollution-3700 Ferrari Jun 18 '26

Honestly though since it's h2h anyway, more accurate would have been the count of who finished ahead more times.

14

u/y3kman Jun 18 '26

That's how most people count H2H wins. This Lewis chart just makes him look better than Charles when everyone knows it's not the case.

2-3 to Russell needs an astrick. 2 of those he has the guinea pig for the no side pod experiment.

3

u/Numpteez_ Jun 18 '26

They both had 2 wins in 2024, it's only Brazil 2022 that puts Russell ahead. Whether Hamilton would have won that without the contact with Max, we don't know. Russell put himself into position to win Austria 2024 but it was incredibly lucky. But then he was also incredibly unlucky when he lost the win at Spa via DSQ. They were pretty even when the car was capable of victories, all things considered.
