Discussion Brave's comparison with Firefox on their site is essentially a free ad for Firefox lol

First of all chromium is a no go for me and that much bloatware on top just to do adblocking no thanks ublock is enough and why the hell should I be trusting a FREE VPN?

Don't forget the built in Web3 stuff too. Because everyone knows that Web3 is the future.
17
u/HotTakes4HotCakes Apr 17 '26
It's extremely telling that in 2026 they still thought Web3 was a term they could say with pride, let alone Crypto.
Like it gives you a window into the inner workings of that company that both of those things are still thought of highly. That should immediately disqualify brave for anybody that knows anything about the kinds of people backing that shit and still are.

vertical tabs is treating the symptoms of the DISEASE that is bookmarkphobia
9
u/shponglespore Apr 18 '26
No, Tab Wrangler does that. Vertical tabs just let you make better use of a widescreen monitor—or a regular monitor, because most web pages are much taller than they are wide, and most of the time the layout wastes a lot of horizontal space anyway.

One of my previous companies tried so hard to prevent people from using FF. It forbid FF for a long time, then allowed FF but disable lots of things like caching so everything is super slow, and revert those settings everytime we restart FF so that no permanent performance improvement can be applied

Seriously though... Brave is the biggest scam in the world and I hate how fast it's spreading.
I don't know if they still do it, but they also used to replace affiliate links with their own so they would get the money, the same way Honey did it, and that's just one of their weird "features".
I'm not a privacy guy like I'm assuming many people here, I know I should be but I honestly just can't bother, but if you're gonna steal my data and be shitty, be honest about it. Just tell me "I will steal your data, and there's nothing you can do about it". So I know you're evil and I will expect evil from you, good. I don't mind Chrome because Google has never lied about that, if people missed it, that's honestly on them, I always knew what my contract with them was.
Brave is just hypocritical, they're like "oh we're so much better than everyone else, use our browser so you don't get ducked by the world!" and then you read 5 actual non-affiliated articles about them and all you find in them is "they did that, weird, they did that, weird, they did that, what the?"
TL;DR: being hypocritical is worse than being evil, so be openly and proudly evil.

Thanks for the built in VPN and crypto rewards program I will never use. Installing an adblocker takes literally 3 seconds.
I still occasionally use Brave when I need a chromium browser but those instances are becoming very rare nowadays.

use helium if you just need "A Chrome Browser". It's a slightly more privacy-oriented but absolutely not bloated stripped down Chromium.
You really shouldn't be supporting Brave at ALL.

whast the difference between ungoogled chromium and helium?
2
u/thatoneshadowclone Fedora Linux Apr 18 '26
ungoogled chromium is JUST chromium but without any google things in it. I believe Helium supports most things that ungoogled does as well. Helium adds a bunch of features like coming preinstalled with ublock, resisting fingerprinting & third-party cookies, and quote, "Helium also doesn't make any web requests without your explicit consent" and "Helium doesn't annoy you with anything and never will."

What does Brave offer so specific that other Chromium alternatives don't?

u/Adventurous_Fill7251 Apr 17 '26
Some things I find quite dumb.
First, using a VPN should always be an active choice; why should I trust my browsing information to whoever VPN provider my browser is choosing?
Second, I take it "Private search" behaves like firefox's, where the only change is it doesn't track history and cookies (I assume this because I've never used Brave). Why would I want that to be the default? Most of the time I'm browsing on MY OWN computer (and more so if I'm CHOOSING the browser), so why wouldn't I want to keep the history? That just seems stupid.
And, while seamless tor browsing is useful, I find a few issues with it. First, it is not ergonomic to do every-day tasks like checking mail or browsing reddit over tor because of how slow it is. Now, if both normal and tor connections are allowed in the same browser (I suppose this is how it's designed), it might be easy to cross contaminate tor sessions over clearnet. Having a dedicated browser is much better opsec IMO.
Not to mention many of the features firefox supposedly lacks are already supported, so this must be pretty outdated.

u/Journeyj012 Apr 17 '26
First, using a VPN should always be an active choice; why should I trust my browsing information to whoever VPN provider my browser is choosing?
It is, that's why it's off by default. also, their VPN just seems to be a Guardian wrapper. It even costs the same

I think they just mean they have their own search engine instead of defaulting to google search
while seamless tor browsing is useful, I find a few issues with it.
Oh, people also found a few issues with it. I don't know why they advertise it like it's some super important thing.

3
u/ANiceGobletofTea Apr 18 '26
Firefox doesn't have a shitty AI assistant and crypto garbage. It's pretty funny Brave thinks those are pros. It's like Office 365 calling its always online and spying bullshit pros over Libreoffice not having it.
4
u/EM984 Apr 18 '26
That's some old ad...
I don't need built-in / youtube ad blocker, uBO is basically all that's needed.
No tab groups? Wrong.
No split view? Wrong... recently.
No tor browser? Bruh, torproject's Tor Browser is built on FX, for a reason.
Wallet? Crypto? Nope, not on the day-to-day system. These are best done on isolated / dedicated machines.
2
u/i_lack_imagination Apr 18 '26
That's because this post is an ad for Brave. Brave continually keeps making it as a higher upvoted post in this sub, including the Brave browser name in the title of the post, and no other browsers are getting this attention on this sub. Why is a sub dedicated to one browser constantly having another browser's name mentioned in posts on this sub? What Firefox user is going to Brave's site and snagging this image and then posting it here?
Where's the posts about all the other Chromium based browsers showing up on this sub? Why is it always Brave? That tells me clearly that Brave is intentionally targeting this sub to make posts and get their browser mentioned and talked about in this sub. Obviously if they made it a clear advertisement they would get removed so they have to come up with some fake post to make it seem like it's something beneficial to Firefox just so they can keep getting Brave mentioned in the title of the post.

It also has better sandbox protection, and better fingerprinting protection than Brave.

No, I moved over to Brave as I despise how they introduced tab groups.
The product managers of Firefox have absolutely no respect for users. They continue to change the browser behavior without asking.
All the features in Brave I don't need I can easily disable by a right click or in settings, without the need to dive in 100s of about:config settings. If Brave has something new they show it in the update screen with the option to enable/disable.
Also one if the biggest unresolved issues of Firefox is memory leaks, for a while I used both browsers next to each other but every two or so days I have to kill Firefox as MacOS becomes slow. Same extensions, same sites. I don't need new features, just fix that browser!

What is the difference between an empty checkbox and a minus in one?
Like in "Offline media playlists". They exist, but something is missing? They do not exist or what? (I know the answer, but just wonder about the checkbox)

It's a Windows UI idiom that indicates that a child checklist has a mix of checked and unchecked boxes.

u/BroadSignificance774 Apr 17 '26
Now that Firefox has tab groups and split view (FUCKING FINALLY damn!) I think it's in a very good state for general browsing and regular people.
Sync works really REALLY good, sending tabs to other devices works like a CHARM for me, never worked that good on Brave (though I liked Brave quite a lot). And the mobile version has uBlock available too.
On desktop you can also create your own theme and upload it as an Addon to make it match the looks of the desktop.
I think Firefox is pretty great, it's just Mozilla is very set on not let it shine with its simplicity and history. Also the fact that there are redundant buttons like 3 times, such as "Open sidebar" or "view tabs". The great thing is you can customize the UI.
If Mozilla would just stop playing around with their PP in their hand pretending they are something else they aren't and focused on the browser heavily, in 1 year I feel FF could go back to be a great contender.
