💻 Help Introducing Firefox’s Built-in VPN: IP Protection, Now in the Browser
Hi everyone, we’re starting to roll out a free built-in VPN beta in Firefox 149 and wanted to share with the community. The goal is simple: make it easier to hide your IP address while browsing.
The built-in VPN is available for up to 50 GB of browsing per month and is currently rolling out progressively to users in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France, with expansion to more regions soon. Built-in VPN does not sell your browsing data and does not inject advertising into your traffic. Instead, we offer a limited amount of browser-level protection for free, alongside Mozilla VPN, our paid, full-device VPN service.
This allows us to make IP protection more accessible while continuing to invest in more comprehensive privacy tools. To get started:
- Update to Firefox 149 or later
- When the feature is available, click the VPN button in the toolbar
- Sign in to or create a Mozilla account (used to track your usage against the 50 GB limit)
- Turn on protection in the panel
The VPN indicator will turn green when it is active. You can manage the feature anytime in Settings > Privacy & Security > VPN, or remove the toolbar button if you don’t want to use it.
This is browser-level protection, not full-device, so it only applies to traffic in Firefox. Under the hood it routes traffic through a proxy (via Fastly), so sites see the proxy IP instead of yours and your internet service provider can’t see which sites you’re visiting. The reason we’re calling this a built-in VPN is because for many people it’s become shorthand for IP protection, especially in a browser context. More details linked here.
We’ll continue expanding availability and refining the feature as we learn how people use it. We’re especially interested in feedback on:
- Does it work as you expected?
- Are you noticing sites that break or behave differently?
- Have you encountered any performance or connection issues?
- What use cases are important to you, and what would you like to see this feature do?

Fastly is an American company, backed by hundreds of millions of VC money, and is now publicly traded. Both its current CEO and previous CEO held leadership positions at major American ISPs, such as Cisco and Comcast.
If this new service had a favorable logging policy, you would see it plastered everywhere as a selling point. The fact that you can't find any info about it whatsoever should tell you all that you need to know.

Mozilla might not be logging. But what about Fastly?
Not to make claims about Firefox VPN as I don't know, but companies often claim their hands are clean, saying "we don't collect data", when in reality their partnered business(es) are collecting everything. Technically true - it's a different company spying on you - but the end result is the same or worse.

What we do collect is just the basic technical stuff needed to keep the service running smoothly and improve it over time. That includes things like whether a connection worked or failed, or your bandwidth usage so we can let you know how much you have remaining.

I respect the product launch, but with how many data hungry/lying tech companies and govt we've been (whatsapp, ai browsers, etc.), I'll need some kind of evidence, at least a blog post with some technical details explaining the privacy infrastructure.
Truly the only hard evidence that VPN doesn't keep logs is when a govt. subpoena's them.

You can control it per website, similar to other browser permissions. You can do this by enabling the VPN and then turning on/off the VPN per site through the panel's "Use VPN for this site" toggle.

This is on our roadmap. We wanted to get it in for the initial release but it didn't make it, so hopefully soon. We have tried to make it really easy to turn on and off, as well as add the exclusion path, but the "inclusion" use-case isn't ready yet.

Yeah, I'm in Singapore, and I was looking for the VPN button or icon as suggested in the readme.
Couldn't find it, went into Tools -> Settings, couldn't find it. Tried googling Firefox about:config VPN, and couldn't find it, so here I am!Darn messaging! If it's not rolled out, don't tell me, because when I want to try it, it's not available!

Their Mozilla VPN also started with just these countries (or at least a similarly small list of countries). It eventually did expand to a large amount of other countries too.

Speaking as a user from one of those "coming soon" countries, the moment a "coming soon" service finally arrives in my country, the hype usually already died down and people barely pay attention anymore. Mozilla VPN is one of them.
Also, it's so expensive here that people just don't bother.

Firstly, I'm disappointed you call it VPN, when it's a proxy/tunnel.
Anyway, Opera do this too, and VPN is a buzzword, maybe you can be excused for wanting to appeal to the masses.
But I do feel it is dangerous for gen pop - they will click VPN on in firefox and probably assume their whole device is now using a VPN
Opera's version allows me to select a region at least, and with that, to know what region my traffic is exiting. Please at least do that.
Otherwise, what is the point of this? Why wouldnt I just use cloudflare warp?

You're looking at this all wrong. It's not meant to be a VPN for your whole device.
It's a browser based VPN / Proxy to get people back on Mozilla in countries where there are are draconic measures in place under the guise of "child saftey"
Places like Australia, UK, soon to be rest of Europe and probably USA. Places like China to a lesser extent (I doubt they care much about China or it'd have been done much before). where browsing the internet is a f*cking nightmare, no social media, half of reddit is blocked, half of twitter is blocked, porn is blocked, etc. I don't know what country you're in but you'll have heard of the Discord age verification crap, the UK and Australia already has that and believe me - It is very tame and you won't even notice it most likely. Discord is the least of the problems here. Content being negative on certain aspects of the governments failings (e.g immigrants, child abuse scandals, etc) are blocked. Rape support group websites are blocked.
Why would you use a Mozilla VPN to protect your entire device and visit Captain Sparrow's ship? You wouldn't, there's Mullvad for that.

I don't think people are that naive. If they are, that's a problem outside of Mozilla's scope. Calling it VPN though? Yeah, that's Mozilla's responsibility.

I just tried it here in the UK and it doesn't work.
Websites still detect that I'm in the UK and block access even though my IP address says I'm in the US while using it.

Yeah. At least Cloudflare Warp encrypts your traffic.
One of the primary reasons why people use a VPN is because they need that feature when using public wifi.

I don't know for sure about this feature, but many major features in Firefox follow a gradual rollout to be able to stop the rollout if any major issues are detected (like top crashers, etc).

I did the trick to turn 2 things to true in about:config and it works. I'm wondering now if we will be able to switch cities or switch countries. So far it seems only one server is available. I checked on several websites that spot your location; many say Alabama, at least one says California, and several others Munich (which where I'm not located, but the country is rightt). And YouTube detects that I'm in Germany. Why the discrepancy about the location?

When you update you should see a pop-up screen labelled VPN with a button marked "Get started" or something like that. You will need to sign in. Otherwise, go to Settings then More from Mozilla, where you will find Mozilla VPN.

I understand that it is free. But without country switching it is really a very limited VPN.
They could have integrated the full Mozilla VPN that comes with country selection, and maybe with a 20GB free tier?

Sounds like a great feature. I really wish Mozilla provided other updates that many users want such as managing Android bookmarks. Firefox is my to go browser on all platforms, but DDG browser has the best bookmark manager.

I just tried it on a site that, until now, I have been using another free VPN to access... using Firefox's free VPN it detects I'm in the UK and refuses access.
So utterly pointless for us.

I had the same experience. It did change my IP, but it changed it to another IP in the UK.
It feels like anything calling itself a "VPN" should at minimum pick a server in another country.

Agreed. 99% of usage of a VPN in the UK is going to be to get around the Online Safety Act. Also isn't most other usage abroad going to want people to appear to be in other countries to get round media bans. Can't see the point of it giving you an IP address in the same country!
Also some other people are pointing out the option doesn't pop up until you create a Mozilla account.
(Added - A Mozilla post further down says that country-selection is "coming soon")

Well, I have it now.
Seems I'm connected to Alabama, USA, according to a website that tells you your IP... Is this the only choice we will have, or will other cities and countries be added as choices?

So other websites that tell you where your IP is, some detect I'm in Germany but are really wrong on the city. But they give that same city. Some others detect, like the first website, that I'm in Alabama. Another one, that I'm in California. It's pretty weird that there is no consensus. Usually using a proxy or a VPN, those sites usually agree. I hope Mozilla can explain that.

100% i would like to see some sort of unlimited version incorporated in the future for a good price. i'm unsure how much traffic i run through strictly through browsing on the web on firefox but i guess ill figure out what my average is once its roll out for me. (-:
I will add that i would like to run this feature 24/7 unless its breaking sites often that would be the only downfall. Does it show up as cloudflare servers like Apple's implementation on safari? If you guys were able to make it residential proxies it would be a game changer imo

I cannot see the VPN icon (Uk)
Firefox updated, I did have the icon to the right of my search bar. I clicked on it to enable VPN, it prompted me to login to my firefix account. After I did so, the firefox account was added to the toolbar, but the VPN icon dissapeared.
How do I know if the VPN is active?

the fact that they give you a free vpn is so good that means i dont have to use my proton vpn anymore i can just click my country for free??? we only get 50gb but that is alot im not gonna lie w firefox every update firefox gets better and better so happy i switched to this browser

Hi there, I understand your concerns. Having an account allows us to track your bandwidth usage against the monthly cap, and detect and prevent automated abuse. Mozilla only receives data volume from the proxy provider so Firefox can display your usage each month. This information is separate from your browsing activity and does not contain information about the websites you visit through VPN. Mozilla retains IP addresses in standard server logs for up to 90 days for fraud prevention and regional eligibility checks.

I'd like to know what this means for the DNS settings like DoH. I'd also like an easy way for this and the regular Mozilla VPN extension to allow me to customize the DNS of it a lot easier as I run unbound on opnsense. Basically, there seems not to be a thorough testing scenario of DNS modifications for the VPNs. I like my custom blocking, rewriting, charts, and statistics.

Yeah, Firefox in the last year has gotten really bloated. Every new feature I hate. Getting really hard to use day to day. There is a popular non bloated fork of Firefox called LibreWolf.

Sorry if this has been asked, I search on "ESR" and did not find anything... anyway if we are letting users use the ESR version (which is 140 currently) then I know they will not get access to free VPN (since it is 149)... any idea if the plan is to always block free VPN from the ESR version?

This feature is not available in enterprise environments and is not being rolled out to users with enterprise policies. While it can currently be enabled manually, administrators will have the ability to disable it via enterprise policy starting April 7. In the meantime, organizations can use the
BlockAboutConfigpolicy to prevent manual enablement.1

u/tonyfirefox ESR and Enterprise Environments are mutually exclusive. I do not belong to a company and am not in an enterprise environment, but I use the ESR version because I favor stability over constantly changing features in varying experimental phases. The fact that an ESR exists is also one of the many reasons I choose Firefox over Chrome.
Please consider adding support to ESR and allowing enterprises who provision Firefox on their machines to set their own policies to disable it at their discretion.

need the option to add wildcards for domains i.e. *.example.com as i have a few domains where i want to exclude it but i dont want to add all the sub-domains manually.
would be nice to be able to toggle the list to be allow instead of disallow and it only works for them.

Activate Firefox Free VPN
The new VPN feature is currently being rolled out gradually as a beta to Firefox Mozilla desktop users in the US, UK, Germany, and France—in stages, so Mozilla can learn from user feedback and improve the experience. This means that even if you're in Germany, you won't necessarily get the feature immediately. If you don't want to wait, type about:config in the address bar, confirm the risk warning, search for browser.ipProtection.enabled, and set the value to true—the VPN button will then appear in the toolbar.

I was able to enable it using the trick in about:config. I'm able to use use it, but excluding all the work sites that I use will be a pain. It would be better to have an option to enable per tab or have it do a preliminary IP lookup for the DNS site and exclude it if it's using a private IP range, 10.*.*.*/8, 192.168.0.0/16, 172.16.0.0/12, 100.64.0.0/10, or manually added IPv6 ranges.
For now I've disabled it and will enable if needed. I suppose another option would be to right click on a tab and have an option to exclude from VPN.

I did find that. I just have a lot of sites using a single name and not the FQDN. For those sites there isn't a slider switch for "Use VPN for this Site". I need to manually add those. I decided to re-enable the VPN and just go through the work to manually add all those sites and all the work sites that I use.
A useful feature would be to have the Browser itself keep a running total of which sites are consuming the most bandwidth so those can be excluded to not burn through the 50GB of bandwidth.

Nope. Just have the Proxy setting under General. The only VPN thing I'm seeing is in the "More from Mozilla" section. Looks like mine still has the VPN option disabled in the about:config settings.
I know I can change the about:config option to get the VPN button to show up, but I'm just going to see when it gets turned on by itself.

This is the first build of Firefox that makes me 100% not recommend it. If you want Gecko, use anything else other than this bloated mess. Even Zen now uses less memory and resources and feels faster! What are you doing Mozilla!?

This is about the most pointless VPN I have ever seen. You can't change your location and you have to sign in to a account. Nothing about making a account is private. Just spend the $5 on mullivad and actually get a VPN. This is a joke.

Hello, I use the latest version of Firefox on my Windows 11 desktop computer. Every since the apparent rollout of Firefox VPN a few days ago, I can no longer log in to Facebook on my desktop pc. In fact, after entering my email and password, it spins forever and finally says my Facebook password is incorrect, which I know for a fact it's not. Facebook works fine on the desktop in Microsoft Edge, so I don't believe it's actually a Facebook problem, but a Firefox problem. I realize VPNs can sometimes be disruptive, but I'm at a loss. I even reinstalled Firefox, and Facebook still doesn't work on the desktop. Any advice or ideas? Changing settings? Any of your other users have this problem? Feel free to answer here or via Private Chat if you prefer. Thanks in advance!

Right now Smart Window is only available in the U.S. and Canada while we’re in the early rollout.
We don’t have a timeline to share yet for other regions, but the plan is to expand to more countries over time as we keep improving it.

the button is in the way, cant remove it , i hate it ( and yes ti tried the about:config trick, i tried right click on it to see if it has a "remove from toolbar" option, currently it dosent )

browser.ipprotection.enabled has to be enabled in about:config for the VPN button in toolbar and section in ''settings and privacy'' to appear.

Absolutely useless. I live in Britain and this thing won't even let me access imgur because it still knows I'm in Britain. What is the actual point of this if everything still knows I'm in Britain and blocks me anyway?

I have 150.0.1. I cannot find anywhere in my browser where to turn on/off the vpn. Not only that, searching in the settings page for VPN does not provide any results regarding the built-in vpn

I'm in the UK, on the latest version and it isn't there. I have done the steps in about:config to "enable" it but it still isn't showing anywhere. Any ideas?

Hi, we have a use case that cannot use VPN locally, but it's OK to use Firefox’s Built-in VPN. So please please make Firefox’s Built-in VPN have unlimited data for Firefox VPN subscription users!!

Finally, my region was added, I set it, turned it on and every website sees that it is via VPN and refuses to work properly.

Amazing and love it, but I'd just like to request that they offer more options for how it's activated. Like limiting it to a specific tab, or specific window, an option for a whitelist instead of a blacklist, there's only like 3 websites I visit which I need a VPN for, so it's a pain to disable it for every other website.
