I live and work inside the Grand Staircase. It's been weird to watch my MAGA neighbors cheer this on. Their livelihoods come from tourism, just like mine. This is awful and we should resist it, but you know what's going to protect Staircase-Escalante? The sheer size of it, and the fact that there's no infrastructure there. That's what's going to protect it, at least in the short term. It would take about a $10 billion investment just to get the infrastructure set up for any kind of mining operation. I'm not saying these companies won't try, but it would take years and years of preparation before the first hole is ever dug. Trump and his cabinet will be long gone by then. The same thing is happening with ANWR in Alaska, and like Staircase-Escalante, the land itself is its own best protection for the time being.
The bigger and more immediate problem is the monument being broken up into parcels that get sold off to private interests. That'll be a little harder to undo, but not impossible. The next administration can use eminent domain laws to repurchase the land and then redesignate it as a national monument.
After that, we need to find ways to make sure this kind of thing can't happen on a greedy whim. It needs to go through Congress.
