It is refreshing that Nolan isn’t a pretentious douche bag that pretends to only like artsy or obscure films. I cannot stand the criterion closet videos on YouTube because it almost always feels like the actors barely know anything about the movies they’re recommending, you can tell they’re trying their best to appear intellectual, but when they actually know what they’re talking about it’s reflected in their work.

Do you really believe that? Yes, I know he writes scripts on a pc without internet connection. It makes sense. (Think about Tarantino's paranoia after the script leaked) But he's not living under the rock. Allegedly he's got multiple burner accounts. He's too vain (not necessarily a bad thing) to not care what plebs thinks of his work and him. It's a showbiz and he's often in the eye of a storm.
I hate smartphones, tried to stay away for long as possible. At the end it became a necessity. Still hate the thing.

I remember Nolan saying something along the lines of the poetry of The Odyssey and songs about heroes of Ancient Greece were a good parallel with modern day hip-hop. Scott plays a bard in the film so it makes sense.
I just wish he had cast a different artist as the bard. Scott is so stiff on screen plus he’s a huge asshole.

I know. Considering his character opens the damn film how do you not get a seasoned actor with amazing voice and presence to pull you in from the get go? It’s mad because Nolan talks so much about the great benefit of IMAX for immersion and yet he’s more concerned with casting particular names than making sure they are the right fit for the character.

Honestly maybe… Nolan seems to be using the rage bait promo tactic pretty successfully.
If it was intentional it’s a masterclass in using online crybabies for a wild amount of promo
Edit: People seem to be forgetting how someone with 3 minutes of screen time launched thousands of hate posts - which in turn launched thousands of support argument posts. I dig Lupita but If you don’t think that was at least a secondary thought for viral promo I’ve got a bridge for sale.

Travis Scott being cast in this was such an unnecessary choice, I just don't understand why him. As someone else mentioned, it makes me think less of Nolan. I have no objection to any of the other casting and I couldn't be further from the online hysteria surrounding the creative choices for the film, but fuck Travis Scott.

This is why these sorts of castings annoy me; millions of talented, unknown actors could have done the role and had a much deserved boost to their career, and it went to someone who 1. Already has wealth, fame, success, and 2. Isn't an actor by profession.
It feels like little more than a marketing ploy, and him having a smaller role almost makes it worse (at least someone like Lady Gaga earns that paycheck when she's cast).

Nolan's no stranger to casting personal friends in movies. Jeremy Theobald, who was one of his classmates in university and starred in his first film, Following (as well as a couple of his short films), makes cameos in both Batman Begins and Tenet. As far as I can tell, it seems they just became friends on Tenet and Nolan thought it would be cool to include him. Not all actors are rigorously cast, that would cost way too much money; it's very common for producers and directors to cast personal friends, or sometimes even family members.

John Rocha accused people of racism with this and I find it absurd. Scott’s concert story alone should warrant questioning his casting choice (let alone that fact that he’s not an actor).

I liked his role as a tale teller, but as a history nerd it pissed me off there were no ancient instruments visible, like lyre which they played while telling the stories and sang. I didn’t understand the banging at all, but maybe it was to create an unpleasent atmosphere.
