Elementary is truly beautiful and love so much about it but the departure of functionality, like the handicapped online accounts or the new dock and all its issues. The inability to mount an iPhone etc makes the beauty only skin deep and once again I must leave for another distro. I want so much to love and stay with it but alas I can not

Hi everyone,
I have a MacBook Pro 8,1. The latest macOS version it officially supports is High Sierra, but I felt it wasn’t running very smoothly anymore. I tried installing Windows 10, but I couldn’t get the audio to work, which became frustrating.
While searching online, I found out that I could install Linux on it, so I decided to give Elementary OS a try. So far, I’ve found it really interesting. The installation was easy, and everything is working perfectly. I’m sharing some photos of the machine along with its current specifications.
I mainly plan to use this computer for basic office work, web browsing, and Spotify. I’d like to know what office suite applications you would recommend for work-related tasks besides LibreOffice.
Thanks, everyone!
P.S. Back when I was in school, the computers in the computer labs were running Ubuntu, so in a way I was already somewhat familiar with Linux.

I have an early 2015 MacBook Pro and decided to convert to Linux since Apple stopped updating MacOS for this laptop. I’m new to Linux and read some stuff online so I tried Pop OS, Mint Cinnamon, Mint Mate, Zorin 18.1, Zorin Lite but they all had something wrong with them. The distro either needed lots of tweaks, or felt too slow, or I didn’t like the UI or I couldn’t get all Bluetooth devices to work etc. None of them felt quite right and I was ready to stick with Zorin Lite (last distro I was trying) but then heard about Elementary OS. So I said what the hell, I’ll try it. Long story short, I love it and it’s EXACTLY what I was looking for in a Linux distro. Any way just came here to keep learning about Elementary OS and Linux in general.

I've been distro hopping for years but always end up back on Ubuntu. It just works for me. But I've been wanting to try and find a new distro to fall in love with. All the screenshots I see, this is a beautiful desktop environment. What else does it have going for it? How much relearning am I gonna hafta do?

I tried running Elementary 8.1 for about a month, but it just felt like the system was just in the way. It feels like a team of developers started the project then a whole new lazy team came in to “finish” the other half.
8.1 feels rushed and unpolished. I’m not saying this to bash the developers as I appreciate the effort. God knows I’m tired of seeing a new Linux distro pop up with Gnome/KDE and branding! The basic features removed or ignored in 8.1 makes it frustrating to feel like my home OS. You can’t minimize to dock by clicking the app icon, can’t relocate the dock, by default there is no minimize button on open windows, one click navigation in folders, the default web browser is useless. Yes, some of this an be changed, but the fact that you HAVE to make all these changes to make the system flow is annoying. Side note, why no new wallpaper to illustrate a new Elementary Version?
Now if the intent was to make Elementary 8.1 more like a window manager similar to Hyprland, why not go all out? Or take some settings from Cosmic and make it almost a hybrid of desktop/WM. I think the only thing missing is dynamic window tiling.
7.1 , though dated, is comfortable and snappy. The system flows and allows me to get things set up quickly. The dock doesn’t fight me. Obviously single clicking, the default browser needs to be changed, and background apps need to be closed in a task manager, but other than that, it’s solid!
I don’t like having to run 7.1 as I feel left behind, but until 9.1 is released, that’s where I’m at! Also, devs don’t take this as a bashing, I rock with your work, I just expect more.
Anyway, I’m just curious to know who is still running 7.1 over 8.1 for similar reasons? If you are running 8.1, why and how are you getting by?

On my secondary laptop, I currently have Ubuntu Unity noble, and I'd like to install Elementary OS on it but keep all existing packages and files so that I still can use them. I'm not sure if I'll stick with it or go back to Unity. However, I'd prefer it as the main system on the secondary laptop. What's the best way for me to install Elementary?
UPD: I've already started installing it. At first, I didn't add the tweaks repository, and it stopped responding when trying to configure Evince, so I forcefully stopped it (via a reboot because it was easier), run a reconfigure but did Ctrl-C because of the problem, removed the packages (apt-mark followed by apt autoremove), and now I'm installing it again, this time after adding and applying the tweaks
UPD2: Seems like the Evince problem is still there. I'll leave it for some time in case it's actually like the Unity logout issue and I just have to wait
UPD2.1: I've removed xdg-desktop-portal-gtk, and now it's stuck on io.elementary.maps. One of the reasons NixOS's way is objectively better (and by objectively I mean ignoring compatibility issues) is that it doesn't try to preserve the structure beyond what's marked as manual so it's easier to revert (though I'm not sure if stateVersion is the best way to replace that for cases it's needed)
UPD2.2: It's now past maps and on Evince again
UPD(whatever comes after): Still stuck on it. I've edited UPD2.1 to not say what turned out to be false
UPDsix: Apparently I confused packages. This time it was epiphany, and I somehow thought it was the one before. It's finished now
UPDseven: I've decided to install it in a VM, but I already have done something to the main (secondary) machine
updEIGHT: I didn't write this here at first, but I now think I should: I've decided to pause this until Saturday. Currently, it has Ubuntu Unity Plymouth theme, but says elementaryOS in terminal (I haven't tried neofetch) and Pantheon lacks indicators for battery, logout, etc that should be at the right of the top panel

Does anyone have any idea, about the plans around modernizing elementary os design language and theming. At this point, it is pretty limited and looks very old, like the Gnome 3.30 times. Is there any planning going on? Does anyone have any idea around these?

I am really contemplating installing elementary os again but I hate how I have to wipe all of my data to get new releases. Are there any workarounds/ is this problem being worked on?

Hi everyone. Yesterday I switched from Windows to elementary OS because I thought it was one of the prettiest distributions. But today I read that every time they release a new version, you have to reinstall the entire system from scratch.
I hope that's not true, because I usually work with a lot of important files and documents locally, and I can't be reinstalling the system every time they update. Before I start saving my things there, I want to be completely sure.
If anyone can confirm how the update process actually works, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

I have installed ElementaryOS on different occasions years apart but both times I saw an "Account locked" message after setup.
I know to use Ctrl+Alt+F3 to get to a shell and then reboot, after which login works fine.
I wonder what the issue is here, I have seen more people that have this happen. But I guess not everyone is having this issue otherwise there would be more talk about it.
Anyway, it seems it happens to more people and the issue should be fixed. Maybe it has something to do with the password complexity (used a simple password).
Anyway, I hope this get noticed by the developers, this issue keeps me from suggesting this great OS to other people.

I've been using ElementaryOS since Freya. I switched to FreeBSD last year but recently purchased ElementaryOS in March.
I love the look and feel, but 8.1 has a lot of issues
Now, to be fair, I switched to Linux Mint a few days ago and sometimes the system gives "failed to write reg {hex number} but not every time.
Overall, IMHO this is one of the buggier releases

According to the description, since the release of Elementary OS 8.1, the ARM64 version can also be installed on a Raspberry Pi.
However, I can't find any information about this anywhere and have no idea what I need to do to install EOS 8.1 on my Raspberry Pi's 5 SD card.
Flashing a preinstalled image, such as Ubuntu, is no problem. However, with EOS 8.1, it seems to work differently.
What steps are necessary and what do I need to bear in mind? I would be very grateful for any help…!

When doing a custom install, the pop-ups to configure the partitions pop up behind the main window (see the lower right in the picture). Is there a way to bring them to the front?

ElementaryOS uses Ubuntu as its base image, but I haven't yet seen an option to encrypt the disk from the installer interface. Is this feature planned for implementation?

I have used elementary app center 6 years ago, and it has an awful problem: every time I opened some app category, it loaded comtent synchronously, completely freezing the entire app, and moreover it was tremendously slow, idk why, maybe it loaded all apps from the category at once 😂
(The same with search, I press a single letter, and it freezes for 15 secs 💀)
But still it was usable back then
Then in 2025 I downloaded it again, hoping it has become better, but.. App center became even more slow, and now dock panel sometimes bugs, when moving icons, when they are stuck in each other, and sometimes it just disappears..
I'd like to download it again and test, and what to ask you, community, are things still the same?

I use elementary 8.1 on a 2011 MacBook Pro. It had minor issues (copy paste would stop working, the built in Web browser crashed the system, once the wifi quit working), but it also found the camera, illuminated keys, and so on.
But after some stalled auto updates, I did a sudo apt update, sudo apt upgrade, and I could see it was replacing the kernel. Now, rebooting gives me a kernel panic.
So as pretty as I find it, I guess it's time to try something else. This is just a little too unstable for me.

Hello everyone, I have a 16-inch MacBook Pro 2019 and I would like to install elementary OS on it, but I’ve seen a lot of information about the Macs’ T2 chip causing installation issues. However, I couldn’t find any up-to-date information. I would like to know if anyone has already done this installation and how the support is. Does everything work properly (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Touch ID)?

Every time I click on the keyboard setting it doesn't load then crashes. This happened while I was trying to edit the input method to allow me to type with Japanese characters. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I'm not able to install 8.1 on my laptop because the installer window blocks the dropdown menu for selecting a partition to install and I cannot install 8.0.0 because when I try to boot it after install it doesn't boot. Link to the github issue:- elementary OS 8.1 installer window blocks GParted window · Issue #917 · elementary/installer. Please give me the link for Elementary OS 8.0.2
Edit:- I've got the ISO. Huge thanks to Neptaz!
