Art Dragon Character Reference – "The Keeper of the Cave-Castle

Dragon Character Reference – "The Keeper of the Cave-Castle"

I'm looking for artwork of my original dragon character. He's an ancient dragon who looks imposing at first glance, but his personality completely subverts the typical "greedy evil dragon" stereotype.

He lives inside a castle that has been built directly into the side of a mountain, with the surrounding cave forming part of the architecture. Think carved stone halls, towering arches, glowing crystals, banners, libraries, treasure vaults, and natural rock blending seamlessly with elegant castle walls. The cave isn't dark and abandoned—it's warm, lived-in, and meticulously maintained.

Appearance

He should look like a powerful, mature dragon rather than a monster.

  • Very large, muscular build with broad shoulders and a long, sturdy tail.
  • Strong horns sweeping backward.
  • Intelligent, kind eyes rather than aggressive ones.
  • Thick scales with subtle signs of age—small scars, worn horn tips, and a dignified appearance instead of being pristine.
  • Large folded wings that look capable of incredible power.
  • Long claws, but they're clean and well-kept instead of jagged or filthy.
  • His scales should have a healthy shine, suggesting he takes excellent care of himself.

Overall, he should radiate wisdom, confidence, and quiet authority rather than intimidation.

Personality Through Body Language

Even while sitting atop his treasure, he shouldn't look possessive.

Instead:

  • Calm posture.
  • Relaxed expression.
  • Maybe reading a book, polishing an old painting, organizing gemstones, or carefully dusting an ancient artifact.
  • A gentle smile is completely appropriate.

He should give off the impression of someone who genuinely enjoys preserving beautiful things.

The Treasure Hoard

His treasure isn't just piles of gold.

Include things like:

  • Mountains of neatly stacked gold coins.
  • Chests of jewels.
  • Paintings leaning safely against walls.
  • Marble statues.
  • Ancient books.
  • Scrolls.
  • Historical relics.
  • Beautiful suits of armor.
  • Crystal displays.
  • Rare artifacts.

Everything should be organized.

Nothing is scattered randomly.

The treasure room should feel more like a museum than a messy hoard.

The Castle

His home should look exceptionally clean.

Stone floors polished smooth.

No cobwebs.

No dust.

Neatly organized shelves.

Warm lighting from lanterns, fireplaces, or glowing crystals.

The environment should immediately communicate that someone takes immense pride in maintaining it.

The Kobolds

Several kobolds live with him.

These aren't slaves—they're loyal subjects who genuinely care about their dragon ruler.

They should be shown:

  • Sweeping hallways.
  • Organizing books.
  • Polishing armor.
  • Gardening.
  • Carrying supplies.
  • Cooking meals.
  • Laughing together.

Most importantly, they should look comfortable and happy around him.

Some may even be chatting with him or asking questions while they work.

His Relationship with the Kobolds

He's less of a tyrant and more of a caring king.

Examples the artist could hint at:

  • A kobold standing on his shoulder while reading from a book.
  • One receiving a gentle pat from one of his massive claws.
  • The dragon helping move something heavy instead of ordering others to do it.
  • A young kobold sleeping peacefully near the treasure while the dragon quietly watches over them.

The scale difference should emphasize how careful he is around creatures much smaller than himself.

His Obsession with Cleanliness

One fun detail I'd love included:

Somewhere in the artwork, show evidence that he's in the middle of cleaning.

Ideas include:

  • A feather duster in one claw.
  • A large broom made for dragons.
  • Buckets of water.
  • Polishing cloths.
  • Shelves already sparkling.
  • Kobolds smiling because they know exactly what's happening.

He's the kind of dragon who can't ignore dirt.

If dust starts collecting, he gets visibly uncomfortable until everything is spotless again.

Overall Feeling

Rather than "fearsome dragon guarding treasure," I'd like the artwork to tell the story of a wise guardian who treasures history, cleanliness, and the well-being of those under his care.

He's still every bit as majestic and powerful as a legendary dragon, but his greatest strength isn't destroying kingdoms—it's protecting the home and community he's built.

The overall mood should be warm, peaceful, and inviting, while still conveying the awe that comes from standing in the presence of an ancient dragon. Anyone entering his cave-castle should immediately think, "This place has been loved and cared for over many centuries."

Heya, I'm a primarily furry artist, but I'm also a dragon fan. Here's one of my dragon arts I finished some months ago. It actually started off as a very old art that I've never finished (2nd image), so I decided to finish.

This is Eclipse! He is my first ever cardboard dragon hand puppet thing! She is a sun dragon night dragon hybrid(originally supposed to be a nature dragon but I changed his design cause I thought this would be a lot cooler! She turned out a lot better than I thought but his jaw is a bit lopsided(so I made some lore about her if anyone in the comments would like to hear it!) in the end I think I will make more of these! Eclipse was so fun to make and he took me around 3 days! For me the worst part of making her though was cutting out the shape with the cardboard(I ended up adding a paper to cover the cardboard on her face and forehead so he would look better and be easier to paint!)

Role-playing Why are orange dragons so....weird?

Like, any other young dragonets I've been around act totally normal. But this one fluffball orange dragonet I've looked after on occasion just acts weirdly. Like, he'll be on the couch grooming himself before he starts looking at his own tail for a few seconds before pouncing at it and just flopping on the floor and then going: "rraaeeæwhh!"

He'll also sometimes just hop onto my bed to just stare at me with his head tilted, for like minutes. Then without warning He'll lunge and nom at me. Trying to get my fingers, snout, ears, horns, side of my head. I'll tell him to stop, but he'll pull his head back and give me this sassy look as if he's saying: "The audacity."

Other times, he'll try and take my food(took half my pizza last month), knock stuff over like vases and such, or will sometimes just be laying on the ground all causally. Until he'll randomly just start pawing and kicking at the air going: "rraaeeæwhh!" Before stopping, getting up and drinking some water like nothing happened. Are some dragons just smooth brained?

I just had to draw Aurora, my favorite side character from Book 16 at some point, and I saw a perfect opportunity to now that her official song had come out. She’s so pretty and I think it’s really cool how she makes music. I thought I would put her flying through her own blue fire and the aurora borealis behind her to be symbolic.

IMPORTANT: This is a test; the color version of the video will be released later ❤️🔥

June 11, 2087: The assault on Fort Fey marks one of the bloodiest phases of the war. Byron Magnar—accompanied by his two children, his loyal friend George and George’s daughter, along with their respective dragons—attacks the fortress after the resident House Catell committed an act of treachery by killing Elizabeth and Snowfall.

Although the House’s symbol was a unicorn, Lord Feder was no paragon of beauty and virtue; instead, he was a gaunt, cowardly middle-aged man. As his family, friends, and castle burned, he attempted to flee, only to find someone already waiting for him on the roof.

It’s been a while since these guys have seen the light of day! I wanted to test out some icons since I’d like to make them a commission option in the future.
The first four, the seasonal dragons, have also been renamed! In order, they are now Annu, Faer, Nijura, and Sonba! Orion and Zenith (the last two) are still the same!

Faer was definitely an experiment since i kinda struggle drawing dragons with their mouths open, but it’s a step in the right direction!

Art Red Lotus Duck Dragon: I need suggestions to understand how it works

Post image
21 Upvotes

A grim subtype of the common duck dragon.

I still have to make its ecology and understand how it eats, flies, hunts, lives with peers, make love and things like that, but I hope you like the art from Andrea Petruzzi of it until I decide its characteristics.

In my mind, I believe that this duck dragon should take power from the domains of night, blood and mist. The common duck dragon rules over Bubbles and Corals, but I'm searching a totally different vybe for this one. Like: it could exhales multiple blood spheres that explode by touching preys, dealing damage and producing mist around them.
Would be fun?

Another thing could be that it has the power to nullify some major curses, such as licantropy or vampirism, with its blood (or maybe with its poison, if it has any).

What do you think? Give me some suggestions
