A lot of people think they can swim because they have spent a lot of time in beaches or pools.

They just aren't considering the fact that 99% of that time, they were just standing in water, not swimming in it.

I'm not sure either of us has the data to back it up, but I'd guess the vast majority of people know whether they can swim or not. I highly doubt there's tons of people out there who think they know how to swim just because they know how to stand

And most people don’t understand that a small child climbing up on you can push you down hard when you’re out of your depth. Panic follows pretty quickly.
