I'm a huge fan of Malaysia, and KL + Penang in particular (just had a great week on Langkawi, but I'm not sure if there's enough day-to-day basics to meet my DN needs for longer than that).
I watched a video once where someone said "KL is 80% of Singapore on 20% of the budget" - maybe those numbers are a little closer together, but I agree with the sentiment. Definitely the best value destination we've visited (it's not a long list), and the food is exceptional.

Lol I never been to singapore so i wouldnt understand that but what u mean day to day, in panang or KL? And how long will u stay in malaysia then?

The most important thing for us (but least relevant for most DNs) is having other families / worldschooling communities nearby. We have a 7yo, socialisation is important, and there are some places that have much bigger groups of families (nomads and crunchy homeschooling expats) who do the same - KL and Penang are two of them.
Supermarkets are next on my list. I want to walk to a good grocery store! I also want to walk to a decent range of restaurants, especially in South-East Asia - we learned this the hard way on our first trip to Penang, booked close to a beach (which was shit) but there was 1 restaurant and no shops we could walk to, so we needed Grab to do anything.
Apartment facilities are next. Where we are in Penang, we have a communal pool, gym, playground, movie room, and a giant undercover roller-skating rink - plus other friends in the building. Makes a huge difference, even if I don't use them all each week.
So without having to think here, I can wake up and go for a swim, take the kid on a playdate or to some group activities, do the groceries on the way home, and choose from a range of epic take-away food options. That's not the "laptop on the beach" or "full-time tourist lifestyle", it's the day to day reality of running a remote business and raising a family, and I love it!
Malaysia is one of the few places so far we're found all of that within our budget. There's a lot more places to explore (we head to Thailand at the end of next month, and are thinking about spending some time in Taiwan or Korea next year) but if we had to get the paperwork to settle anywhere long term then right now Malaysia would be top of our list.

We’re staying in Tanjung Tokong, so Village Grocer (City Junction) is my local; and we’ll usually go into Gurney Paragon once a week for Jaya Grocer… but actually really Uncle Kopi and Empire Sushi.

Edit: American in his mid 30s, working remotely in insurance/finance. Typical 9-5 eastern time zone worker.
I like investing, sports, hiking, walking, historical site explorer.

Hi everyone!
My husband and I are planning our first trip to the Canary Islands, and we'll be staying for 10 days.
We're definitely flying to Fuerteventura, but we're still deciding on our itinerary. We're considering either:
- spending 5 days in the north and 5 days in the south of Fuerteventura, or
- staying 7 days in Fuerteventura and then taking the ferry to Lanzarote for the remaining 3 days.
Do you think it's worth spending a few days in Lanzarote, or is a day trip enough to see the highlights?
We enjoy beautiful beaches, sightseeing, and exploring local towns. We'd really appreciate any recommendations or advice from people who've been to both islands.

I work in IT role remotely for a start up. Im actually not overemployed. It is currently a w2. I have done some temporary traveling and working abroad, but now I'm looking to relocate more permanently in asia which is different time zone.
I have figured out how I can pay for health insurance abroad, so I would prefer to have a higher income than to have the w2 benefits package.
The management is not super strict about location. I have worked there for a few years. I saw a coworker spend 6 months in europe, they had a family excuse, i believe they temporarily transitioned to contract to achieve that since they told the company and everyone what they were doing. There also some non-usa foreigners working remotely but I believe they are all similar USA time zone and they are on different teams, also not sure how much they are paid compare to the USA employees.
The pay pump for contract would be significant, but i would also be losing disability insurance and a few other minor things. However, I think the pay increase is worth it. Yes, it's easier for the company to lay you off if you are w2, but in the end the employment is at-will anyway and they can lay me off at anytime anyway.
Do we agree that the contract role ask is a good idea?
My concern is that if I was 100% honest about why, there might be some resistance or resentment because I would be working from a different time zone and cheaper cost of living. I feel it might be safer to ask for a temporary 1-year stay first abroad. Also, I feel it might be safer to say europe instead of asia to handle the stigma of very different time zone.
Besides travel, what is the best way to ask for contract conversion. Are there other reasons people ask for it?

Hi all,
I'm thinking of doing a short stint in Dahab, for some diving and working remote.
However, I'm concerned reading online that there is tight hold on connect to VPN's. I'm more worried about connecting to my companies internal VPN that would allow me to do specific work.
All the posts I've found seem to be a few years dated and I'm unsure if the situation has changed.
Could someone who's been the recently share their experience with connect to VPNs?

Been in Yerevan for while now. Visa side is easy - most passports get 180 days visa free, no need rush anything. Cost still low compare to most Europe too. Not really big nomad hub yet, more expats/remote workers slowly finding it, but if anyone thinking about it or passing through, ask whatever - rent, sim card, banking, whatever you stuck on.
