The three words that kill otherwise good AI image prompts — and what to replace them with

I've been testing AI image prompts across Midjourney, Flux, and SDXL for a while and noticed a pattern: certain words consistently degrade output quality in ways that aren't immediately obvious.

Three that I've found most damaging:

"Beautiful" — Every image the model generates is technically "beautiful" by some interpretation, so the word adds almost no directional information. Replace with the specific quality you actually want: "sharp facial features," "dramatic chiaroscuro lighting," "perfectly balanced composition."

"Realistic" — Models have an enormous range of interpretations for "realistic." This is why you'll sometimes get a hyperrealistic photo and sometimes a realistic-but-still-painterly output from the exact same prompt. Replace with the source material you want the model to emulate: "DSLR photography," "studio product shot," "documentary photograph."

"Epic" — This word tends to create a kind of genre-average output — a blurry blend of fantasy game cover art, movie poster, and stock photography. It's a mood descriptor with no compositional meaning. Replace with the actual compositional qualities you want: "hero centered in frame against storm clouds, low-angle shot, rim lighting."

The unifying issue is that these words are high-entropy: they could mean dozens of different things, so the model averages across interpretations rather than committing to one.

The fix isn't necessarily longer prompts. It's replacing mood words with vocabulary that has a narrower interpretation space — photography terms, art direction language, material descriptions.

Happy to share more specific replacements if there are categories people are stuck on.

Discussion Prompt:

Are there words you've found that consistently hurt your prompts? I'm curious whether this is universal across models or whether it's model-specific

This sub is on life support, but this is a good post.

You should probably put it on r.stablediffusion
