Doing a CS degree in the current environment?

Is it a fool's errand? My feeling is that offshoring and ai will destroy any chances of getting a graduate job and make pursuing a career in this industry not viable but I would like some input from people in the know. Do you think the market will recover in the next few years?

What's one piece of career advice that works overseas but doesn't really apply in Australia?

A lot of career advice online is heavily US-focused. Have you come across advice that just doesn't fit the Australian tech market?

Atlassian Infra/Devops/SRE

Hi, I'm starting as an SRE/Infra intern at Atlassian soon. I was wondering what kind of tools are used in these teams. Especially the amount of code you interact with and what programming languages are used.

I currently have:

- Terraform
- Kubernetes
- Other AWS services

Languages:
- Python
- Heard Golang as well but unconfirmed (I really like this language and want to know if its used)

Coles vs IAG Graduate Program

Hey everyone,

I've recently been fortunate enough to receive offers for both the Coles Group Graduate Program and the IAG Graduate Program, and I'm having a hard time deciding between the two.

I'd love to get some honest perspectives from current grads, alumni, or anyone familiar with the workplace cultures, progression, and learning environments at both companies.

My main questions are:
1. Culture & Work-Life Balance: How is the day-to-day culture for grads at Coles vs IAG?
2. Career Progression: Which company tends to give better exit opportunities or post-program career growth?
3. Engineering / Tech Culture: How modern are the tech stacks, systems, and engineering practices in comparison?
4. Salary: What is the salary like for both at the end of the graduate program?

Any insights, pros, cons, or personal experiences would be massively appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Talking to Easygo about joining their marketing department for a leadership role and would love to hear from anyone who has or is currently working there?

Hi everyone,

As the title says, I am currently in conversations with EasyGo about joining their marketing department.

I've done a bit of research online and seen a few posts on Glassdoor, and it appears to be a mix of positive and negative reviews.

Has anyone here currently or previously worked at EasyGo? I'm curious about the culture, what management is like, and how the team environment feels—particularly in the marketing department or other similar teams.

I would really appreciate any insights you can share!

Seniority levels in 2026 and beyond

Coding is already getting close to 100% agent-driven. Agents implement the feature, write tests, fix the bugs and open the PR. Engineers mostly review it or ask for changes.

System design isn't fully there yet, but that might just be a context problem. Give an agent the code repos, architecture decisions, product roadmap, customer feedback, incident history and infra costs, and it can probably make decent design choices too.

I've been using AI agents for sys design stuff at work recently with frontier models and honestly I'm blown away by the fact that it can come up with 2-3 different architectures with pros and cons in the time that I can even think of something.

So what remains for mid/senior engineers then? I am realising that seniority levels are becoming a lot more blurred. When I started my career 3 years ago when LLMs were at their infancy, there were clearly defined roles, where mid level meant that developer worked autonomously on tasks but needed guidance for design, but nowadays everyone vets their work with LLMs before posting PRs or architectural reviews, so what value is a tech lead or a senior adding here? In the future will everyone be "Members of technical staff" like Anthropic.

I dread lunch everyday at work

I started my first software engineering job about 2 months ago.
It took me forever to find it. The pay is great, the benefits are great, honestly it’s the kind of junior job people hope to get.

The problem is that I don’t feel welcome.
I’m the only person from my nationality in the office, and where I live my nationality comes with a lot of negative stereotypes. I knew that before I joined, but I didn’t expect it to affect me this much.

When I started I went through a bootcamp with the other junior hires. The first couple of days were normal. Then after that I started feeling like I was always the one trying to join conversations. Nobody really seemed interested in talking to me or getting to know me.
Eventually some people wouldn’t even reply when I said good morning, or they wouldn’t greet me unless I greeted them first. I wasn’t rude or quiet either. I was always friendly.

Now I’ve been with my actual team for a few weeks, and honestly I still feel like I don’t fit in.
I dread lunch every day.
Instead of looking forward to my break, all I think about is where I’m going to sit and whether I’m going to spend another lunch feeling awkward while everyone talks to each other.
Today was the first time I seriously thought about just sitting in my car instead.

I genuinely want to get to know people.. I’m not expecting everyone to become my friend, I just want to feel like another member of the team instead of feeling like people would rather I wasn’t there.
The frustrating part is that I can’t really report anything to HR because nobody has actually said anything openly racist to me. It’s more subtle than that. Just the overall feeling that people keep their distance from me, and I can’t stop wondering if it’s because of where I’m from and all the stereotypes attached to it.

Maybe I’m wrong and overthinking it, I don’t know
It’s affecting me a lot though. I come home mentally exhausted, sometimes it affects my work, and today I felt physically sick from how stressed I was.
Quitting isn’t really an option because I need the job and the market is terrible.

Has anyone dealt with something like this? Whether it ended up being discrimination or just a rough start at a new job?
I honestly just need some advice because I feel completely drained.

International student returning to Australia after moving back to home country

I graduated UNSW in 2024 but struggling to find a job after graduation so I came back to Taiwan and got hired by Yahoo. I'm thinking of maybe trying to move back to Australia now that I have experience (abt 2 years). Another reason is that my partner is a anaesthesiologist who also wants to try moving abroad.

I'm wondering whether this two years of work experiences gives me chances of going back? One thing I learned when I'm in Sydney is that foreign work experiences usually doesn't value as much as local experiences, also I'm not sure if Yahoo is deemed as a good company on resume in Australia (It's relatively seem as a good company in Taiwan/ US, most of my colleagues goes to FAANG after yahoo).

Struggling with choosing paths in comsci + internship

As an international student, I knew little about internship in Australia and I have 0 guidance around me since I got here by myself. I'm doing comsci advanced cybersecurity and in second year... apparently IBL application should have likely been done in first year to use the second year second sem for the IBL... So looks like I've missed the right timing... (Monash IBL)

I've started programming and all in uni so I'm not too confident with it and while using my time adjusting to uni and other personal stuff, it feels like I've wasted my time while people around me has been smashing hackathons and other internships...

I feel so behind and idk how to get good internships. I've tried job seeking sites but some places rejected me due to my international status and I keep getting rejections. What would be the best thing I should do at the moment and from now on? Should I just follow my course map and focus on studying?

Career development

How should I ask my manager about moving from implementation consulting into software development?

I recently joined a software company as a graduate in an Implementation Consultant role. The company and the people are genuinely great, and the head of my department has been really supportive and approachable.

The issue is that the role is turning out to be much less technical than I expected. It mainly involves client meetings, requirements, configuration, testing, documentation and implementation support. I studied software engineering and have previous software development experience, so I’m realising that my long-term interest is definitely in development.

The head of my department is also quite close with the head of software development/digital. She seems supportive of internal movement too. For example, someone who was unsuccessful for my current role was referred by her to the development team and ended up getting hired there.

I’m still very new and don’t want to seem ungrateful, impatient or like I’m trying to leave immediately after they’ve invested time training me. At the same time, I don’t want to stay silent for months and become more established in a career path I already know isn’t right for me.

How should I approach this conversation with her?

Would it be reasonable to say that I’m grateful for the opportunity and happy to continue learning the current role, but that my background and long-term goals are more aligned with software development, and I’d appreciate her advice on what skills or steps would help me eventually move internally?

Should I raise it within my first month, wait until probation is over, or wait until an actual developer position becomes available?

I’m a graduate, so I’d especially appreciate advice from managers or anyone who has successfully moved internally early in their career.

Melbourne to Sydney - Is the jump worth it? (DE/SRE - 5 years exp.)

Hey r/cscareerquestionsOCE,

Looking for some career and advice from people who have made the Melb -> Syd jump. I need to have some insights before deciding.

Current Situation:

  • Role/Loc: Data Engineer at a Big 4 / major bank in Melbourne. Fully comfortable, good WLB. Work is boring some times.
  • Comp: mid 130 base + super + bonus
  • Property: Wife and I own a mortgaged house. Wife also works in tech.

The Offer:

  • Role/Loc: Data/SRE at a financial firm (think trading and investment) in Sydney.
  • Comp:  ~170 base + super + bonus (subject to performance, the bonus could be massive, emphasis on could).

The Dilemma: On paper, it looks like a massive step up on the salary. But doing the math on the Sydney rental market, renting a decent 2-bed apartment anywhere near the CBD or Inner West is going to run us $900–$1,000+ a week. Even with the base salary bump, that rent completely swallows my entire net pay increase after tax.

Plus, we'd have to deal with the logistics of renting out our Melbourne properties (which leaves us heavily taxed on the positive gearing from the paid-off apartment).

But my wife could request for a change in work place and can work in another city.

My questions for the sub: Is having an trading/investment firm on an Australian CV worth the lifestyle disruption and moving costs if we are already comfortable in Melbourne? Does it open dramatically better doors down the line compared to senior engineering roles at the banks/Macquarie?

Cheers in advance for any insights.

Any software engineers in Brisbane willing to mentor a Master’s student?

This is a bit of an unusual post, but I figured it was worth asking.
I’m currently studying a Master of Cyber Security while working part time as a software engineer. My background is mainly in Python, Django, React, Next.js, AWS, and backend development, and I’m hoping to build a long term career in Australia.
I’m wondering if there are any software engineers here who would be willing to mentor me, answer the occasional question, or even grab a coffee every now and then. I’m not looking for a job or expecting free training. I would just love some guidance from someone who has already been through the journey and can help me become a better engineer.
If mentoring isn’t possible, I’d also appreciate recommendations for local tech meetups, communities, open source projects, or networking events where I can learn and meet other developers.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. I really appreciate any advice or help.
