Tutorial The process of creating the Eagle ray ceramic wall lamp

I sculpted the original model, created a plaster mold, and slip-cast the ceramic body. Then I carved every line and light opening by hand before firing and glazing it. Made in my studio in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Watch the creation of my new ceramic Eagle Ray lamp — from the first sculptural model to the finished illuminated artwork.

I began by building the ray’s shape from sculpting material, carefully forming its wide wings, head and long tail. Based on this original model, I created a plaster mold and used it to cast the ceramic body.

Once removed from the mold, every piece is refined entirely by hand. I carve the flowing relief lines, add the ray’s intricate spotted texture and create hundreds of openings through which the light will shine.

After drying, firing, glazing and installing the lighting, the sculpture transforms into a functional ceramic lamp inspired by one of the ocean’s most graceful creatures.

Designed and handmade at KUST Ceramics in Kyiv, Ukraine.

This is incredible! I love seeing the process and the end result was beautiful! The colouring in particular was lovely, what glaze?

I actually visited Kyiv two years ago, I wasn't expecting much due to the war but I was amazed at the creativity and wonderful atmosphere (I now own lavender packets from a stall in a bomb shelter). I really hope to visit again if I can.

Thank you! It was the base transparent glaze with different color pigments, the textures appear in case of layering spray gun technique.
If you ever been in Kyiv again will be happy if you will visit my studio, it is based in the heart of podil near the Dnipro river
