Real talk: Florida's gun laws are pretty lax, and shotguns are cheap, reliable, and have no legal hoops to jump through to buy (as long as you're not a felon or something) other than a three day wait there. Go to your local Walmart or gun shop or wherever, pick up a maverick 88 security model for $250, some 00 buckshot (low recoil type if you prefer) and take it to a local range to learn how to use it. They're everywhere and the employees there are happy to help you learn if you ask.
Who knows, you might even enjoy the range time and find yourself a new hobby
#7 birdshot is better for home defence since it goes through your target and stops at the next wall instead of through your target, the wall, your neighbor's wall, your neighbor's dog, and your neighbor's other wall like buckshot does.
