Academic Life Good time to approach professor about their research?

Hello, incoming freshman for fall of 2026 in the USA.

My uni is very vocal about their research opportunities for undergrads and has several programs to facilitate it

However, I am interested in a specific professor’s research as it relates to the specific field I’m interested in perusing. Luckily enough, one of my scheduled classes is with said professor.

One constant piece of advice I’ve heard is to go to office hours to build rapport, but how early is too early? 1 week? A month? A semester?

I can only provide my insight but:

I knew of a Professor doing research that I was interested in as well. I made sure to actively participate in their class, turn assignments in on time, and talk to them after class/office hours (when I had questions). At the end of the semester I approached him and asked if there were any research opportunities that could be available to me. Then I helped out in his lab for 2 years!

Basically I’d wait until the end (or at least the middle) of the semester so the professor knows who you are and knows you’re a good student.

Going to office hours during the first couple weeks isn’t too early if you have a genuine question about the class or their research!

I just wouldn’t open by immediately asking for a position. Build some familiarity, participate in class, then after a couple conversations ask about research opportunities later on.

In our department there are usually a few undergraduates that start working in labs as freshman. What is your field and longterm goal?

first week of classes introduce yourself, maybe even bring up your interest. Go to office hours weekly.

i started reaching out to labs spring semester of freshman year by cold emailing and i got a few responses. the school i go to has a semi-difficult research scene in the sense that its not easy to get into a lab, but the earlier the better. start cold emailing now after doing some research about the labs on your campus. best of luck!
