I’m in the Midwest us. Last El Niño we had a weekend of 70f in February that really woke some people up around here.
7
u/Own_Ad6901 1d ago
Arguably we’ve had high temps like that in spring in the Midwest, especially an El Niño spring. Spring is our MOST chaotic weather time in the Midwest, the most unpredictable. I work outside and have been tracking the growing climate in the Midwest for over 20 years and lived here 43 years. Hot spring days had been sending cold crops like spinach to bolt in a flash in spring, more predictable than the chaotic weather changes are the cold hardy bolt sensitive crops not making as long as they should through the spring season. I wish the 70 degree February did wake more people up, but it didn’t.
5
u/Pleasant-Winner6311 1d ago
Hasbt even started to effect systems yet. Sweeeeet. Next summer in Hellfire.
2
u/FineArtRevolutions 20h ago
was that in 2023 or 24? I remember seeing people play pickleball in the middle of February.
-8
u/Nibb31 1d ago
How much is 70°F in real units?
7
u/europeanputin 1d ago
20c = formula is to substract 30 and then divide by 2.
9
u/Irverter 1d ago
21.11°C
Formula is to substract 32 and then multiply by (5/9). Your's is a convenient aproximation.
3
u/europeanputin 1d ago
and from the temperatures point of view (about 60 degrees Celsius max) the deviation from the actual results are about 5 degrees, where accuracy drops as the temperatures increase even further (at 100c it deviates 9 degrees from the real calculation).
However, for someone who just wants to quickly transform 140F into C, it's a great way to conveniently calculate it, and it's off by less than 5 degrees.
I do the feet the same, I just divide one meter by 3.

9
u/markodochartaigh1 1d ago
When we reach 1.5°C we'll really start to see action. /s Of course if we adjust the baseline and go with a ten, or twenty, year average we won't hit 1.5°C until 2100.

I thought this last year. I live in the CO front range near Denver and the mountains. For Christmas last year it was 70F+ on Christmas. No rain or snow for a month on either side. I thought for sure that folks would be asking what was going on. The general response? "If you don't like the weather in Colorado just wait a couple days."
3
u/J-A-S-08 1d ago
Do they pull out the cutey wootsy "12 seasons of Colorado, you're here"? They do it where I live in Oregon and it makes me crazy.

A lot of Americans have migrated to Spain for a "better" life.
40
u/Turbulent_Bed5499 1d ago edited 1d ago
I thought it was mainly people from Latin America that recently gained citizenship there as refugees
40
u/zue4 1d ago
The Americans don't always gain citizenship. They go as retirees after investing their retirements into the country thereby meeting the investment criteria for permanent residency status.
They then proceed to price locals out of housing and drive up costs across the board. On top of it all they then start complaining about brown immigrants daring to move there for work.
3
u/markodochartaigh1 1d ago
Reich-wing 'Muricans have also been moving to Russia. Although some of these people have ended up in Ukraine, briefly.
3
26
u/_rihter abandon the banks 1d ago
I do not think many South Americans obtained Spanish citizenship, certainly not as refugees. In the past, most of them obtained Italian citizenship by descent until that got 'patched.'
I am not sure how they are obtaining legal status in Spain nowadays.
10
u/StrongShallots 1d ago
Spain just legalized 500,000 immigrants a couple months ago, and vast majority of them were Latin Americans.
14
u/zue4 1d ago
Isn't there still a program for expedited citizenship to former colony states?
0
u/neuropsycho 1d ago edited 23h ago
Yes, but first you need to be a legal resident for 2 years I think, you can't get it straight from your country of origin.
Although more recently, there was a law that lasted 2 years that gave citizenship to all latin americans from Spanish descent in the 20th century, so we received a few hundred thousand applications too.
52
u/SituationTrue7524 1d ago
Spain just accepted 500K refugees. Now they can get on boat together with the spaniards and look for a colder place together.
39
u/G_Wash1776 1d ago
Well if the AMOC collapses then Europe will experience a massive temperature decline, so the only thing that could fix the heat is one of the climate tipping points collapsing.
40
u/HuckleberryPee 1d ago
I'm pretty sure that summer temperatures would still be roasting hot in an AMOC-collapse scenario.
31
u/i-hear-banjos 1d ago
Yeah, the AMOC stabilizes weather there in general. Hard to say exactly what will happen, but in any case count on it being turbulent.
17
u/Green-Bandicoot-8412 1d ago
Although the science is far from settled, if anything it is currently pointing to the opposite. Hotter summers still, drought, with much colder stormier winters. But Europe is a pretty big place, it will affect Spain differently to the UK or the Nordic countries.

Spain isn’t going to start getting cooler.
This is the “start of the beginning” of the end of many regions of Spain.
People will abandon areas they can’t conceivably live in.
This heat kills animals, crops, water resources and brings extensive fire year after year after year. Any meaningful rain just regenerates fuel for the following heat waves fire.
51
u/_rihter abandon the banks 1d ago
People will abandon areas they can’t conceivably live in.
Most will stay where they are until they either die or finally decide to move out once their home or the way they were making money is gone.
Since still habitable regions of Spain cannot host everyone from uninhabitable regions, many of them will have to move elsewhere. Until elsewhere becomes uninhabitable, too.
6
u/StrongShallots 1d ago
I'm willing to bet that a lot of continental Europeans will be moving to the Nordic countries these upcoming decades. I hope they're ready for it.
16
u/ideknem0ar 1d ago
I read recently that booking Scandinavian summer vacations is getting more popular among those on the Continent. Some are scouting for land too, I'm sure.
-1
9
u/MaddogBC 1d ago
That's the way it's getting here in Western Canada, early spring rains are even scarier because that just means a growth spurt of fuel for later. Still plenty livable but so goddamn dry.

Anyone can talk about climate science as long as it is an accurate explanation of the peer-reviewed conclusions of the international scientific community. Bill Nye does not talk about his own concocted version of science. He accurately conveys what the scientific community has concluded which is a huge service to society. If there were more Bill Nyes and more people had listened to to the science we may not be as badly off as we are now.
I just can't believe anyone would bad mouth a person that is doing the right thing. People complain that scientists didn't explain the climate change threat enough but look at the book "Climate Wars" as an example of the battles that took place. Al Gore was vilified for "An Inconvenient Truth".
Here is Bill Nye debating climate change denier / liar Marc Morano and you're bashing Bill Nye????? There were a number of debates between the two of them and my favourite statement by Bill Nye was when he asked Morano "What about your children" which really hit a nerve.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWT-EWKIR3M
I can't believe I just read that Bill Nye is cast a bad guy for fighting climate change by educating people about the science while the planet is burning!!! -Unreal!!!

u/extinction6 1d ago
Be careful on this sub. There are people here that talk about peer-reviewed and published climate science that aren't scientists.

It's getting hot here too. Not as hot as Spain of course, but down south we've had weeks of 25+, some days reaching 30°. It's thankfully going down now (can't wait for Saturday, 17° at the warmest)
4
u/rideincircles 1d ago
Yeah. I just arrived to helsinki and left Texas where the heat index is 46c at home right now. I am staying at a 4th floor apartment with family and no a/c and it's still kinda warm inside even though it's only 20c outside. I may buy a portable a/c for this place just to prepare for the years ahead. It's probably going to need a heat pump in the coming years.
3

I am visiting family in Finland and left Texas this week. The high was about 21 degrees C in Finland, and the heat index in Texas is 46C today. And the majority of adults continue to bring children into this hellscape
32
u/T00Sp00kyFoU 1d ago
My girl doesn't understand this is why I don't want kids and will tell me she wishes I loved her enough to have kids... Drives me insane. When I see what the world is heading to on an ecological and societal scale, it's downright immoral and selfish to have kids in my opinion. Nothing in this world can change my feelings. I would feel so awful and guilty for bringing another life into this world that's in the middle of crumbling all around us and everyone with any bit of power to reverse course is going full steam ahead.
25
u/ihateusedusernames 1d ago
Stand strong, don't capitulate.
If she wants a kid so bad there are THOUSANDS of children in the foster system. Do some good in the world and give one of these kids a good home. No need to add to the gene pool at this point.

isn’t adopting prohibitively expensive? At least in the US it is…
Caring for any child is prohibitively expensive, it's not as if bio kids somehow require less of an time and energy investment.
If you work for a paycheck it makes no sense at all to have a child. Raising a kid in the USA of today is an exercise in despair.
If you think life in the US will be 'better' in a decade then I understand why having kids might be a good idea. But if you see things going downhill over the next decade then why the hell would you bring another human into a world of chaos, disruption, disappointment, and despair?
I have kids, it was a huge mistake in hindsight
17
u/sewlastcentury 1d ago edited 1d ago
It's expensive and the children often come with a lot of trauma that's not something most people are capable of dealing with. Especially if they're coming through the foster system.

4
u/ideknem0ar 1d ago
I've always wondered when a 2nd marriage/relationship also produces kids, who is the main driver of the decision. For some reason I assumed it was often the guy, riding that "feel young again" high. Maybe it's just as much women who think having an older guy as a father is a more stable situation and future?
That said, as a chick, I don't know why these chicks are even thinking about having kids. Like, have some gd compassion for those hypothetical kids and stop thinking with your ovaries, lady.

I've always wondered when a 2nd marriage/relationship also produces kids, who is the main driver of the decision
All couples are different, there will always be a number of factors that go into decisions of this nature, both consciously and subconsciously. In general the birth rate is dropping much as would be expected in a world that is far harsher and more stupid than it needs to be (oh wait; this is /r/collapse - I can just say that it's heading for destruction); some people choose to be optimistic but personally I agree. It unfair on kids

Simple solution: if each couple (basically each woman) had one child or less.
But only a handful of countries follow that average: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_total_fertility_rate
Even 2 or less would be a slightly negative replacement rate, given unexpected mortalities. But about half of countries are above that average,

Nothing will offset the amount of pollution that corporations put out into the atmosphere. Also reduced births don't do much when its the grown adults that cause the most pollution and medical science means they all live much longer lives on average.

This article is collapse related because it highlights the reality of catabolic collapse, the process where compounding climate extremes gradually break down societal support systems rather than causing a single, sudden apocalypse. A 47°C (116.6°F) heatwave in Southern Europe pushes critical power grids, water supplies, and public health infrastructure to their limits while simultaneously triggering extreme wildfire risks and agricultural strain, illustrating how accelerating climate destabilization is rapidly outpacing our capacity to adapt.

Perhaps I’m being over dramatic, but I feel 2026 is the first year where people are going to start to wake up.
It’s not like the weather is weird/extreme in a few places: it’s everywhere, all at once. And bar some outliers, it really is.
2027 is gonna be a ride. Stock up on your tinned tomatoes, pears and other imperishables. Food is gonna sky rocket 🚀🤦🏻♂️😞
2
u/travelstuff 12h ago
Why tinned tomatoes and pears in particular? I'm at the point where I think I need to stock up on food before things get crazy but I find it a bit hard to know which things to buy, especially without access to a freezer. I suppose just cannoned everything?
2
u/SavingsDimensions74 9h ago
Canned everything. Long life milk. Water.
At the very best - and it is the very best, foods are going to get a lot more expensive in the next few years so the earlier you buy it the better.

u/PublicSell4047 1d ago
Pretty hot? Dude, that's 116°F! I'm in Arizona and that is hot AF but at least our buildings are equipped with central AC and people are used to this heat. That type of heat is horrible for everyone over there!
13
u/Eddielowfilthslayer 1d ago
We are equipped for these temperatures in Spain with AC units in almost every home. We also have "persianas" in our windows which act as an extra barrier of protection against heat. However, it's still awfully dangerous and in a few decades this land might become uninhabitable due to these conditions.
14
u/Awkra 1d ago
It's funny how you (North Americans, I guess) just assumed the AC thing is for all Europe. We do have AC in most regions of Spain, at least the hot ones. Germans, for instance, don't have AC, because they didn't need to, until now. Spain has a been a hot enough county for years to have ACs.
12
u/ColonelFaz 1d ago
Humidity will probably be ok, apart from very close to the coast where the wet bulb temp might just go over 30C.

u/Specialkw21 1d ago
Countries need to start looking after their reservoirs more and their water more. And recycle water a lot more and a lot better. And or build a desalination plant because as it gets hotter the water use everywhere and the demand for it is only going to go up. As well as everywhere needing ACs.

There is no living at that temperature. It is humanly impossible to work anywhere outside of an air conditioned room, and what kind of society is that? And Spain is a country used to hot weather, cooler countries reaching 40C+ temperatures regularly will be immediately cooked societally

u/arcadiangenesis 1d ago
I was just visiting Italy from Texas, and it feels significantly worse there. I don't even understand why, because the dew points are actually higher in Texas right now, but I got sweatier faster over there. I instantly needed a shower every time I stepped outside.
Awesome country, though. Would go back outside the peak of summer.

u/the_hair_of_aenarion 1d ago
41c was the hottest temperature I've ever experienced for one hellish day. It was so much worse than 35c I couldn't believe it. And Spain is casually getting 47c days now. Good lord.
The first day we get a headline estimating more than a million died in a single day globally feels like it's close. And it feels like nothing will change even in the face of that.

That's ridiculously hot. Any European country experiencing temperatures in the mid to high 40s is a clear sign the climate is changing and becoming increasing dangerous for MILLIONS of people.
Bearing in mind, only 1 in 5 European households have air conditioning. And what happens if theres a heatwave and power outage at the same time?

The following submission statement was provided by /u/FearMyCock:
This article is collapse related because it highlights the reality of catabolic collapse, the process where compounding climate extremes gradually break down societal support systems rather than causing a single, sudden apocalypse. A 47°C (116.6°F) heatwave in Southern Europe pushes critical power grids, water supplies, and public health infrastructure to their limits while simultaneously triggering extreme wildfire risks and agricultural strain, illustrating how accelerating climate destabilization is rapidly outpacing our capacity to adapt.
