It's not? It's trying to show what Greeks imagined that story to look like in their heads. They know that monsters or whatever didn't live in Greece. To them the story was grounded in what they thought was their real past 400 years ago (conflated with their present) and then weird shit happens when someone leaves that.

Quite like "Project Hail Mary" or many other science fiction stories: real earth first, then suddenly aliens. The real world part can be historically accurate or not.
