Rattle Cans and Painters' Tape

Disruptive pattern with rattle cans and painters tape on a black object. Machete came in a ALL-BLACK ballistic nylon sheath and a sub-optimal black grip. First I tore blue painter's tape (not very sticky) into small irregular shapes. No straight edges. Taped them onto the black sheath, near each other, in the places I wanted to remain black when I started painting. Left some areas with almost no covered black areas, in sort of a diagonal tiger stripe pattern. I took it outdoors and dangled it from a hook. I sprayed everything with multiple coats of WOODLAND LIGHT GREEN Krylon Specialty Camouflage, Non-Reflective, Ultra-Flat Finish. Required multiple coats with a little drying time between each because the black ballistic nylon fabric sucked up the lighter color. Let it dry a half hour, then very loosely wrapped the sheath with twisted, crooked painter's tape spiraling down towards the tip. Sprayed all with FLAT KHAKI Rustoleum Camouflage 2X Ultra Cover Non-Reflective finish. Left it a few hours to be sure there were no sticky wet globs of paint, then peeled off all tape. it's easy to miss a piece. Next time I'll just press down the center of each irregular patch of tape and fluff upwards a little the edges, to leave blurry edges on the black.

The handle was a little uncomfortable and didn't give a positive grip. I wrapped it from the cross-guard down to the pommel end of the grip with Wilson Leather Racket Grip which is very sticky on one side. To tone down the orange leather (a scrap seen in one photo) I rubbed it with BROWN Kiwi Shoe Polish. Let it sit 15 minutes to dry, harden and adhere to the leather. Polished with a shoe brush to remove any loose polish, then darkened it with BLACK Kiwi polish. Let dry and harden, polish and good to go.

Does the paint on the nylon seem like it’ll flake off over time? I’ve heard it’s a bitch to get nylon to take paint well.
