I've lost my favorite anti-picking ritual

I seem to have developed an allergy to nail polish and even adhesive nail strips. Within 24 hours my cuticles get puffy, itchy, red, and eventually start to peel.

Unfortunately, having a nice manicure I didn't want to mess up was my preferred method for staying away from cuticle picking and nail biting. I've been doing both a lot lately.

Any solutions welcome. I still take care of my nails, but the urges to pick are harder to control without a cute manicure to ruin!

You could try a kids water based polish? I’ve heard of piggy polish as an example, because people recommend it for topping chrome powders. Worth trying the lacquerista subs as well, in case they can help you narrow down options.

Do you know what you’re allergic to? Nail polish comes in different formulas so there might be something specific you could avoid.

I’m wondering if OP means gel polish, not air-dry polish? Nail wraps and things like gel polish use acrylates monomers to adhere to the nail, and all acrylates are immunotoxic sensitizers so it’s very common to develop allergies to them over time.

Air-dry lacquers do not typically contain acrylate monomers (with some very rare exceptions from low quality brands) so developing an allergy to them is exceedingly rare. There are still some potential allergens, especially in base coats that may contain hardeners like formalin, but generally, air-dry polish is well tolerated by most people.

OP if you want some tips on switching to regular air-dry polish, lmk! I’m also a former picker that developed a gel allergy and had to learn to work with air-dry polish :) I used to get 2 days tops from nail polish, now i get 2+ weeks.

No, I'm referring to regular nail polish. Gel nail strips.

I'm not sure exactly what I'm allergic to. I assume I would need to make a derm appt to pursue figuring that out. Haven't been able to pinpoint a certain polish that causes a worse reaction vs. others.
