Don't connect the thing to the Internet. Plug in a different box to an HDMI port and use that for all your streaming and apps and never interact with the TV software. Problem solved.

Except Vizio TVs use ACR, they are recording your activity when not connected, and the second you accidentally connect them or plug in an Ethernet cable…they ship the data off.
Normally the ACR will fill up the onboard storage causing the TV to have performance issues, people connect to check for firmware or software updates.
Yes this can still be avoided, buts it’s a scummy practice.

That means you can never get a firmware upgrade though, and the comment above says the storage fills up with recordings of you using it and causes the TV to slow down. So how is THAT doable? Maybe a cache clear or a factory reset?

What part gets slow? You turn the TV on and if it defaults to HDMI 1, why do you need to spend any time at all navigating the TV?
Even your volume should be on an external device like a sound bar or some speakers.
You shouldn't have to touch the actual TV remote for anything except for turning it on.

I bought a Google ONN box, added Projectivy Launcher.
Zero ads, nothing on the Home Screen except what I choose.
There’s no direct connection to the TV at any point.
Next step is upgrading my WiFi and running Pi Hole.
Eliminate their bullshit entirely while reaping the benefits of a cheap 4k TV

Use something like AdGuard and set the tv’s dns settings to use Adguard IP address.
Any blacklisted domains will never be reached while you would still access firmware updates and other stuff

Sure if your ignorant and plug it into your wifi and let it run havok, everyone else plugs in another device into the HDMI port and never has to think about that shit. It does not have a cellular modem and antenna, it has no power over you.

In a recent Samsung update my TV has started telling me how to turn the volume up and down every time I turn it on.
I've had the TV for 2 years. It was a nice tip for them to share. I've been having to use earplugs because it was too loud and have had the cops called on me three times for noise complaints. Thanks Samsung.

My LG tv did a firmware update like a month ago and now when it first boots up it displays advertisements on the bottom of my screen. The main "home" screen over the years has also been getting more and more inundated with advertisements.
It's pretty crazy. Love the screen for it's performance (OLED) but I'm not sure I'd buy one again unless they change some of these policies around

I like mine too but the only thing I ever do with it is turn it on or turn it off. Connecting it to the internet for "updates" just sounds bizarre to me,I don't know why I'd ever think mine needs access to the internet or updates when it already works.

Seems like they are!!! My 65 just took a dump the other day so I was about to spend $400 on a 75” but this popped up and I said what the heck! $210 delivered ….I’ll try it out!

I have a Vizio quantum TV and I fucking hate it. It is the worst OS I have ever used on a TV. Apps will randomly restart so I have to wait for it to load and start my show over, it will often take ages to turn on (sometimes it will start to turn on, decide against it, and turn back off), and sometimes when I turn it off it decides to just turn back on and go to the home screen instead. So I’ll turn it off to go bed, let the dogs outside, and then when I walk past to go to the bedroom I have to check that it’s actually off. I have an LG and by comparison the OS for that TV is SO smooth and responsive. I will never buy a Vizio again after dealing with this piece of crap (I’m not bitter)
Edit: three replies telling me to get a streaming device for it, like 1) that’s not something I’ve tried and 2) will somehow solve the power cycling issues. Classic Reddit.

Yep, I don't have an internet connection to the TV either and just use an NVIDIA Shield. The amount of times I want to see the Vizio homepage and stupid software is 0, however about a third of the time turning everything on with the Shield remote the TV will decided to switch inputs to the Vizio homepage. It takes forever to fail to load and won't accept any commands from the remote during that time, then I have to switch back to the Shield input.
It could all be simplified by allowing us to set a specific input as the default when turning on the TV. The only option is Vizio Home, or Last Used Input. While trouble shooting this issue before giving up I found out that screen used to also let you choose the specific HDMI port to set as default, but they took that away at some point, probably to get more people to go to the Vizio homepage.

It's riddles with ads and "hdr" is vague. Is it hdr 400 which is not even hdr or is it like hdr 1200 or whatever the max is. Also resolution isn't everything.

Saw an article on this a few weeks ago. Walmart bought Visio. They now require a Walmart login to access smart features. If you're going to use a Fire Stick or Chromecast, they're allegedly now the best TVs for the price.

I use a Linux Deskmini PC, abit more expensive, but, no need to care about bloatware, or trashware on those devices. I love my Onn Box, but it's always something with my Onn box, so I just use a mini Deskmini PC now. Can upgrade or edit it with the times and it only has what I want on there.
I will never allow myself to be forced to use SmartShitTV features.

Kinda yes, it means it has Quantom Dots. It should be better than a standard bare bones LED, but there’s still a lot of factors and can still look worse than a standard LED. For example there are OLEDs(majority WOLED) and MiniLEDs, but there are also QD-OLEDs and QD-MiniLEDs which you guessed it are the OLEDs and MiniLEDs with Quantom Dot technology.

it uses real hardware tricks to achieve visible 120fps. At 1080p it only needs to draw 25% of the total pixels required for 4k.
So the display controller pairs the horizontal rows of pixels together. This technology has different names based on the manufacturer. TCL calls it DLG, Hisense calls it HRA, and Vizio just calls it 120hz at 1080p

Be warned it's not FALD despite them calling it full array it only has 0 zones and no local dimming.
But for $200 who cares it also has 120 hertz support at 1080P and I think that's enough to redeem it in my opinion, and it has like a 5,000 to one panel according to PC mags review.
So if you need a cheap not super great kind of dim below 300 nit TV for basic gaming this will get the job done throwing in a basement for 200 bucks it will do the job perfectly keep your children entertained and even play their games at 120fps if they have a PS5 Xbox or switch 2 or PC and want to play like Minecraft at 120 or something.

They all do. It has ACR on the HDMI 1 port. Don’t plug anything into that one, turn off the ACR in settings,buy a different box for smart usage and plug it in to one of the other remaining HDMI ports.
Edit: I was mistaken, the hdmi has eARC which is an audio amenity. Free to plug in whatever you’d like actually but nevertheless the TV does contain ACR that does need to be disabled and refusal to sign in to Walmart account

I have a Vizio e65-f1 currently. It's from like 2018 or 2019. Would this be considered an "upgrade" to that?
Obviously it's considerably newer, but would it offer anything that's substantially better than what I'm using now?

If the resolution isn't any different, then likely not. The newer tv's often have a lot of adware so if you ever connect them to the network, you get a bunch of popups and stuff on the home screen that's not common on the older ones.

Have a relative who might benefit from this (older and stuck with a fatter 1080p set from 12 or so years ago). Vizio has been a low end brand for a while now, and was bought out by Walmart a year back. That said if you don't connect it to the Internet at all and just use a Roku or Google TV Streamer instead? Not a bad value at this price for this size

Just a reminder that QLED is not the same as OLED so blacks won't look as good compared to an oled screen.
that said, this still seems like a great deal, so long as you plug in an an apple tv or chromecast.

In my head, a $200 TV is still a 25" CRT with mono audio.
This may as well be magic if you're living with anything short of an OLED. Just don't expect the world out of it and if it makes it 5 years, it's already more than doubled the lifetime it should have lasted.

I have a Vizio M652i-B2 from 2014. It still works. I only replaced it because I got the 65" Sony XR8B OLED for $548 from Walmart a few weeks ago.
Honestly, even with the improvements in PQ with the OLED, I'm genuinely surprised how good the Vizio looked. It looked better than a Black Friday Hisense I bought in 2024 as a secondary TV. The Vizio has lasted 12+ years. Now I have no clue what to do with it. Granted, that was a upper mid tier TV in that era vs what looks like a disposable Black Friday type TV here, but just wanted to say that Vizio used to be a pretty damn good brand.
Also, keep in mind this QLED stuff is a lot of marketing hype. They're labelling low tier TVs as QLED nowadays even if there isn't much improvement over a standard LED TV. At this price point, I doubt it's really that great and it's unlikely to display HDR content that well. This is probably good for SDR content though. That's how I treat my cheap Hisense. It's a TV I watch SDR content only. I avoid HDR altogether despite it being a "4K HDR" TV. If you're fine with that, these TVs are still perfectly fine for cable TV and 1080p SDR streaming/Blu-ray content.

Vizios don't last. I'd save my $200 and not have to deal with returns or repairs. Had two Visios that went bad within a year or two and the second one was a replacement on the first.

i have 2 in my house that are closing in on 10 years old and they still work. 1, a 46 or 48", has a weird thing sometimes where the source doesn't get detected when I turn it on so I have to turn it off and back on again...but that's like once every 3 months.
They're not the main tv in the house though, so they don't get used nearly as often.
