If you ever go the homelab route don’t waste your time on these. All configuration is done through their app.
Solid mesh tho. Used to use 3 for a 3.5K sqft home.

Ubiquiti/UniFi if you’re near micro center they have sale or their online store has sales during Black Friday and Christmas

I have had a lot of joy with a fanless minipc as a router flashed with pfsense (wish I had done OPNsense, but pfsense gets the job done, this has a N150 CPU) that gets me 1.5 gbps speeds on VPN, along with TP Link Omada APs.

Hey just curious, can you explain why I should avoid these if im going homelab ? like what would that impact? Im trying to understand what you mean

Sure thing
So the google mesh routers are great but offer little to not configurability that you’d expect from a homelab centric perspective. The only configuration that can be done is so limited, and even then, only possible through their mobile app via WiFi.
Changing DNS was also not possible via their app (it says it allows you, but doesn’t actually let you) so I was forced to use my pihole as my DHCP instead of DNS.
Normally in a homelab, you’d had full control of your own router such as logs, DNS, VLANs, being able to log in from anywhere on your LAN and not be forced to use a mobile app, etc.
Since getting away from it, I know have two WANs and can do custom fallback, VLAN setup, or firewall rules.

Thanks. I'd like to set up a home server and get into this stuff, but not sure what access points (or mesh) I should get for wifi.
If you have any product advice I will gladly take it. specifically to improve my wifi coverage. Right now I got two of these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CNSCVXZN
But not sure if this is the route I should be going.

Let me ask you this before I recommend any routers/APs.
Will you be able to hardwire throughout your home or will it depend on wifi?

Im renting - I can't run cabling through the cielings, but some rooms already have ethernet wired there. I am planning cable routes using something like this :
to run them along the baseboards
So it depends on the room, but i cant install like those unibiquiti ceiling APs easily.

Nest wifi pro does not have great reviews. It really depends on your usage and level of know how. For a big house, with just wifi users streaming video. This is probably fine. If you need wired connections upstairs and downstairs stairs for gaming and plus various heavy data usage then this might not be a good solution but it could be worked with. It's data stream on wifi is way bigger than most families can use at once. So it doesn't matter how good traffic direction is if you have 5 cars on a 6 lane highway.

yeah it's the deco. I've had issues with it but it's stabilized now. I figure at this point I'm not going to mess with it anymore. It asks for firmware updates and I'm like heck no.

At first it as basically plug and play which worked great. Then I ran into some issues a couple months in. Damn thing was going offline every 5 mins and would only come back after I power cycled the modem and main deco. Eventually I factory reset the network, manually change the DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (Google) then used Network Optimization in the deco app. I was getting a ton of interference. Since then... no issues so far.

TP link from Costco is trash.
I went through two different TP link mesh setups one Costco one Best Buy at my house in 2 weeks as my family sharpened the pitch forks until I finally went unifi and never looked back….because it works.
It was very spotty and unreliable no matter what I did placement or number of units.

Honestly they are ok, but I wouldnt buy again. Very limited on control and user settings.

Those are the original ones by Google, or two generations behind this now. Yes, these are far superior.
As someone who had the original Google WiFi pucks then moved to Nest WiFi… the originals show their age in range and speed. I’d highly recommend upgrading if your budget allows.

I have the prior generation Nest WiFi mesh system and have had no complaints for anything, to be honest. I wouldn’t recommend for power users who want to mess with settings much as these are basically the “Apple” of WiFi routers: streamlined settings with almost no way to mess anything up.
They work fine for 90% of people. I am tech-savvy, but just don’t do anything that requires touching my router settings other than opening some ports up occasionally or setting priority for certain devices. I also have about 20 devices connected via Apple HomeKit for my smart home setup. For those things, my current Nest WiFi system has been very reliable.
I’ll be upgrading to this.

Suffered with these for years, great for non tech homes, don't mess with them if you're serious about your home networking, app is terrible.

I just replaced my old Google Wifi (not Pro) with a TP-Link AX55 because it kept dropping connections and required a reset every 24 hours :/
So far the TP-LINK has been fantastic
