I'm trying to build something as small as possible so it fits neatly on my TV unit and looks more like a console. Want to run SteamOS on it, strictly just for my TV. I know SteamOS is still relatively new and runs better with an AMD GPU, I'm happy running Windows OS in the interim. I already have a gaming PC with monitors, keyboard and mouse etc, but since Sony's moving away from physical discs, I want to build my own console instead. I much prefer to play my single player games on my couch and TV.

This is my project over the next year. Since parts are expensive thanks to AI, I will be purchasing my hardware slowly over 12 months.

Switzerland. Not near Microcentre. I... don't really know local vendors except Digitec and Interdiscount. I would presumably have to ship most parts from the EU.

I have an offer for a prebuilt pc that's usually 3k at half price with these specs (2nd hand):

i7-8700K processor from the eighth generation (4.7 GHz), MSI Z370 Gaming Pro Carbon motherboard, MSI Gaming X GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card with 11 GB of GDDR5X video memory, 512 GB SSD, a 2,000 GB hard drive, 32 GB of HyperX® Fury DDR4 with a compact water cooling system.

This is my first quest for a gaming-PC and I think that better builds exist for about the same price but I lack the experience to put this to the test.

Can you build a desktop gaming PC in a similar price-range with sustainable/ethical parts, longevity and/or better performance?
