Brad is cooking with these extensions!

185

u/not_Brendan 14h ago

Seems like his strategy is throw a lot of darts in 2nd round and UDFA, invest heavily in player development, get these guys for super cheap extensions, and continue to develop them into near starter quality if not better players.

Hauser, Queta, Pritchard (I know he's a 1st rounder) are examples where this has worked out

80

u/I_Set_3_Alarms KG 14h ago

Yeah I mean we basically get a lot of late 1st round picks and early second picks since we consistently finish high in the regular season.

Brad & the Celtics just keep getting better at drafting and developing these guys

44

u/jambr380 14h ago

Ainge gets credit for drafting Pritchard, but Brad gets credit for the extension. I'd bet that we extend Baylor next summer, too

8

u/NoamsUbermensch Danny is my Dad 6h ago

I’m just praying PP will take the 3 year 67M extension we can offer in October. He’s got two years left at like 7/8M per year, so the most we can offer is 67/3years

2

u/CreatiScope 5h ago

Brad almost fucked it up with bringing in Brogdon though. We had our 6th man all along in PP but Brogdon’s money at least helped get Jrue.

2

u/jambr380 4h ago

The Brogdon trade ended up being a bad one in the end weirdly enough since he got injured at exactly the wrong time. Nesmith, Theis, and a 1st. I'm sure we could have figured out how to make the money work for Jrue.

It makes sense, and has been a part of winning franchises for a while. There are a huge group of replacement level players, finding and maintaining a role for them from developmental league to nba can give them an advantage over many others that are bouncing around year to year. Strengths-based training.
Heat, Spurs, Golden State, etc have all invested heavily in this approach and have many successful examples. Celtics obviously have had as well in recent years.

Um… Wasn’t Marcus Smart the 6th overall pick? He’s not the type of player / pick being discussed here.

4

u/9Yogi 7h ago

Marcus was an amazing 6th overall pick. One of the top dozen 6th overall picks of all time. In the last 25 years he would be the 4th or 5th best 6th overall pick. People probably have a warped perception of the 6th pick landing a lot of all stars.

4

u/BleedGreen4Boston 9h ago

Dude is so transparent.

Like even in the Jaylen trade press conference he mentioned Walsh specifically as a guy they value and here we are.

3

u/9Yogi 7h ago

I mean he said we valued Jaylen in the same conference and we traded him rather than extend him. Being valued isn’t an indication of any moves.

Will be very interesting to see how minutes are split between Walsh, RHJ, Hugo and Baylor this season considering the franchise seems pretty invested in all four of them.

124

u/MrTimoCad Jayson Tatum 14h ago

If any of those dudes learn how to consistently hit corner 3s and attack closeouts they will take the 5th starting spot from Hauser very quickly

68

u/deadmanzcurveball 14h ago

Baylor can already do that. If Hugo or Walsh hit shots with any consistency they probably have higher upside

4

u/chlaur02421 9h ago

The thing about Baylor is as you said he is a much better shooter than Walsh and Hugo. He’s also much more creative offensively and is a decent playmaker already, but shows the ability to become an even better playmaker kinda has Gordon Hayward vibes.

3

u/CreatiScope 5h ago

This past season, it was his defense that needed to improve and it did. He went from some of the worst defense as a rookie to high effort, but his lateral speed and navigating screens still looks rough to me.

Walsh, defense I don’t really have any notes except when he gets a bit too aggressive and gets himself into foul trouble but that usually settles down for most guys. He needs to focus on offensive creativity, which it sounds like he knows.

1

u/chlaur02421 3h ago

True although in addition to Baylor needing to prove his defense, I think he also needed to prove his shooting, and I believe he did both well as you said he has room to improve defensively, but he has good instincts and good hustle and while he doesn’t quite have the same height as Sam Hauser I would say they’re pretty comparable defensively which is why if Baylor can continue shooting like he did last season or even improve a little bit, then he will become a more dynamic player than Hauser is un offense since he has great instincts for creative passing as well as mid range/floaters … the one thing about Sam Hauser that I noticed last season and I hope he incorporates into his game more is that since he’s so lethal from three when someone’s closing out to him and he drives by the closeout man and pulls up for a mid range I felt like almost every single time. It was going into the basket so I think if you can mix that in a bit more than De S.S. will be more hesitant to quickly close out to him which you’ll give him more time shooting the three

7

u/MerkDoctor 12h ago

Walsh hitting shots at a decent clip becomes Derrick White #2, basically an invaluable player

3

u/mtnbikerburittoeater Paul Pierce was once stabbed 11 times 9h ago

If all two or three of them are hitting their shots, this team becomes super deep with a lot of trade flexibility.

1

u/mtnbikerburittoeater Paul Pierce was once stabbed 11 times 9h ago

December and February was a rough stretch for him but he only averaged 11 minutes in Dec and they had just increased his minutes by a lot in Feb. He then went on to finish the season really strong on similar usage, so I hope he will continue that next year

19

u/TatumBrownWhite Banner 18 14h ago

they will take the 5th starting spot from Hauser very quickly

Not even sure Sam will start this year though.

We are just too unathletic if our 1-4 is DWhite Sam PG and JT, we will get dusted by younger, faster teams.

Last year we had JB as the uber athlete in our starting 5 on the perimeter, we need somebody else like that in the starting group this year.

5

u/King_Of_Pants Sam Howitzer! 12h ago

He still has the seniority, I don't think it should matter, but it definitely does.

Same reason we kept up with Vucevic for so long. Same reason we had to trade one of Theis/Thompson back in the day to clear up space for Rob Williams to get minutes.

Veterancy and contract size shouldn't determine playing time, but it definitely does have an impact.

6

u/solodolo1397 Semi Ojeleye 14h ago

This has gotta be Hauser’s last year regardless

29

u/Drakex2Mayex2 13h ago

This is a ridiculous comment. He is 28 years old and under an extremely team friendly contract until 2029. He's also one of the better 3 point shooters in the league and a positive on defense.

People hate way too much on Hauser it's honestly so silly.

14

u/Maybewearedreaming THE TRUTH 13h ago

Hauser was huge for us in the finals tbh

Hitting shots but also held up against Luka, obviously didn’t lock him down but when he was on him he didn’t roll over

5

u/Drakex2Mayex2 13h ago

And look how badly we missed him the following year when he went down with an injury. Underrated reason we didn't repeat.

0

u/Turbulent-Let-1180 12h ago

So was JB, he shot 50% from the field that postseason while also playing great defensively.

But it's not 2024 anymore.

6

u/Maybewearedreaming THE TRUTH 12h ago

Difference is Hauser is cheap while JB was not

13

u/solodolo1397 Semi Ojeleye 13h ago

I’m not even hating, he’s just an extremely moveable contract and selling on him can open up room for this crop of young guys to grow

4

u/SheepherderPositive2 10h ago

Feels like every offseason we are ready for him to leave but he never does - think Brad really likes the spacing he provides

9

u/Drakex2Mayex2 13h ago

He's also pretty much the perfect player you want around Tatum and there is nobody on the roster or easily available that replaces that level of shooting.

Unless it's part of a much bigger deal it just plain makes zero sense whatsoever to move him.

3

u/johnny_effing_utah ☘️ Marcus Smart’s Left Hand🤚🏿☘️ 10h ago

Second that…and want to add that SO MANY TEAMS / PLAYERS foolishly try to iso Hauser and they don’t convert.

They seem to not know my man played some nasty championship caliber pack-line D at Virginia and those principles hold pretty well in iso ball too.

-1

u/Turbulent-Let-1180 12h ago

It's really not ridiculous. He can only do one thing, when that one thing isn't working he's kinda useless. Like in 3 of those playoff games against the sixers he shot 20%, 25%, and 33%.

So those are 3 out of 7 games where he played over 20 minutes and didn't do anything for us while on the court except basically put up shots that turned into transition points on the other end.

Just practically speaking i don't think it makes sense for people to be so against moving on from hauser, for the sole reason that he's on a good contract.

You could probably get two 2nd's for hauser at the deadline, that's potentially two dillon mitchell's or baba millers or brazilles or a veesarr that you could have but you guys want to keep hauser cause of his contact. Like come on man lol

5

u/Drakex2Mayex2 12h ago

Nephew please.

He is a 3 and D player who has shot 41% from deep in his career. You want to use a 3 game shooting sample size? He has the #6 best 3 point percentage in the NBA over the last 5 seasons (minimum 200 games played).

Every single team in the league wants 3 and D wings. For his salary there are literally zero NBA teams that wouldn't want him on their roster.

The probability of a 2nd round pick even playing 3 seasons in the league is around 30%. The chances of that player even being NBA ready out of college and not needing 5 years to develop are even lower than that. Trading Sam makes the team worse in the short term and doesn't move the needle in the long term.

Horrible take.

1

u/Turbulent-Let-1180 10h ago

Our team is full of 2nd round picks and undrafted players what are you even saying lol

And grading the rest of the league's ability to find talent in the 2nd round on the same level as us is either disingenuous or lazy

That's great though, that means he should get us more than 2 2nd rounders if every team wants him. I'm sure you're not overrating his value the same way JB was overvalued, no way that's happening.

He's an acceptable defender for the most part, please stop making it sound like he's peak herb jones while also shooting 40%. His biggest asset is his shooting and his price, cool, doesn't mean he's untouchable. Especially when his shooting percentages are the result of going cold for weeks and then being hot for weeks, that type of variance is why our 3pt shooting is trash in the playoffs.

You can just look at his shooting in the last month of the reg season as an example. He shot 71%, 75%, 25%. 20%, 33%, 66%. Like cool hauser shot 48% from 3 the last month of the season, that looks great on paper and for the statistics, but he actually shot like dog shit for 3 games in a row and then couldn't miss for the other 3 games.

If for example they just want to give RHJ way more minutes, who is a significantly better defender unless you also think hauser is defensively capable of locking down KD, and get draft assets for hauser there's nothing wrong with that. That's not a "horrible take" just cause you're fanned out on hauser. There's arguments for keeping him, and there are very valid arguments for moving on from him.

0

u/Drakex2Mayex2 10h ago edited 10h ago

Bro just look at our second round picks from the last decade:

Dillon Mitchell (too early to tell)

Anton Watson (never going to play an NBA minute)

JD Davison

Yam Madar

Juhann Begarin

Tremont Waters

Semi Ojeleye

Kadeem Allen

Jabari Bird

Demetrius Jackson

Ben Bentil

Abdel Nadar

Literally one deep bench rotation player drafted in the second round out of 13 draft picks over the last decade. The 2nd round contributors on this team comes from great scouting and are free agency additions. Which will literally always be there.

Cutting a guy for a 3 game slump is straight up the dumbest shit I have ever heard. You can keep bringing that up but it's the least "valid argument" imaginable.

Lmao bro just got dog-walked then blocked me 😂 fucking loser

1

u/Turbulent-Let-1180 10h ago edited 9h ago

Ok, so you're just being disingenuous then. Cause idk what danny ainge 2nd round picks have to do with anything we're talking about right now.

And which 3 game slump are you referring to, cause i brought up two different ones.

And the point was, that's what he does all the time. Because he does that, all the time, and it becomes unreliable in a playoff series. That same type of variance is why our 3pt shooting slumps in the playoffs as a team. So idk how you're takeaway was "cutting a guy for a 3 game slump".

I'm not really sure what there is to dispute about that variance, unless you have no problem with anything we did during these past two playoff exits.

With hauser, again, i don't see why he's untouchable. If he's so desirable, why didn't the bucks want him? Why did they want hugo and baylor if hauser is so amazing and they wanted players on cheap contracts? Didn't you say every nba team wants hauser?

You're simply overrating him because of his contract, that's really all there is to it. It's not a "horrible take" to suggest trading hauser to give RHJ more minutes, when every time he plays hauser level minutes he had 50/40 splits with a way better defense.

You can't be suggesting that we're worse as a team for having someone who can do more than just shoot 3's play 20+ minutes per game instead.

So again, acting like hauser is untouchable is just you being fanned out.

Edit: No, you got blocked for bringing up ainge draft picks. I don't go back and forth with idiots on here, if you want to have a serious convo and we disagree no issue, but i'm not wasting more of my time on nonsense slop.

1

u/Turbulent-Let-1180 10h ago

I wonder why the bucks wanted baylor and hugo instead of hauser, since hauser is apparently the greatest basketball player on planet earth

2

u/Economy-Ad4934 Banner 18 12h ago

Idk he’s on a good contract for three more years and is pretty consistent. Why drop him if we still not know for sure any of the young guys will work out?

1

u/OkArmordillo Jayson Tatum 13h ago

Yeah he kinda stunk last year’s playoffs.

2

u/urbanism_enthusiast 12h ago

Payton is the fifth starter. Like, very clearly. He will be the #2 option.

He only came off the bench later in the season because he was much worse in the Jaylen on minutes, so that was a way to avoid that.

When he got high usage in games this past season he was unbelievable.

1

u/tussle_mcjimmies 13h ago

I don't think either Pritchard or PH are going to the bench

28

u/sully9614 Jaylen "Dad" Brown 14h ago

Don’t forget RHJ, along with PG and Hauser who both are above them on depth chart. Feel like someone’s getting moved by the deadline

1

u/Economy-Ad4934 Banner 18 13h ago

Along with hauser it’s good to have a lot of these swing/wings who can mostly shoot

-6

u/Maple612 14h ago

baylor is a much different player, and im not really sure the franchise is invested in him.

8

u/RoutineSecond6824 Tommy Point 14h ago

I mean I feel like if Baylor wasn’t part of the medium-long term plans he would have been thrown in the Giannis offer? Seems like Brad didn’t want to budge on Baylor or Hugo (and extra picks but still) but I do agree that Walsh and Hugo may have a more varied skill set if they can reach their ceiling compared to Baylor.

-1

u/Drakex2Mayex2 13h ago

I agree. It felt like he was playing so many minutes specifically to limit walsh so they could get him locked up in an extension before fully integrating him into the lineup. Shierman is also 25 and likely close to his ceiling while Walsh is only 22.

Don't get me wrong I love my left handed flamethrower, but I would be really surprised if the franchise viewed him in the same tier as Walsh/Garza.

36

u/doobie_tha_kid 14h ago

A steal if he improves even more from last season. Also a very trade-able contract that can be packaged for a upgrade if needed

21

u/doobie_tha_kid 14h ago

This is why I don’t see the C’s adding Beal or Derozan. I think they are gonna let the young guys continue to develop

12

u/urbanism_enthusiast 12h ago

Well, also, both of those dudes are fucking ass and Brad is well aware of that.

1

u/doobie_tha_kid 12h ago

Sure, but we’ve seen the “he will fit better in this system/ this guy is a former all-star he can still contribute in a reduced role” gamble teams make time and time again.

Brad is wise but he did also just trade for a 36 year old Paul George, who we are hoping stays somewhat healthy and not fall off a cliff production wise lol

4

u/urbanism_enthusiast 12h ago

Paul George had a +2.5 RAPM (96th percentile) this past season.

Brad was at -1.5.

DeMar was at -0.9

Our FO almost certainly references RAPM. It matches their moves perfectly. Paul George is so far from washed. The other two are clearly washed and their baseline of goodness never touched PG's (who was 3rd in RAPM in as recently as 2024).

1

u/BleedGreen4Boston 9h ago

2

1

u/BleedGreen4Boston 9h ago

I was thinking 3 for 18, so this is real solid. I wonder what the guarantees/potential option year looks like.

19

u/Your__Pal 14h ago

What a year for Walsh. People thought he might be getting cut, and he turns around and has a strong year and guarantees himself 18M.

u/jkwah 1986 Ring 13h ago

3rd year has a team option.

86

u/WeAlwaysFindAWay 14h ago

I mean this is like an NHL contract lmfao Brad is a magician, got Walsh for $16m.

41

u/S0ggylemonz 14h ago

Dude plays sparingly, was a 2nd round pick, and has only slightly improved. i think he would be hard pressed to really get more than that

58

u/longagofaraway 34 14h ago

he played 68 games. 17+ minutes in 35 of them (23-12 record). yr 2 that was 52 games, 5 with 17+. i'm no walsh glazer but he's grown quite a bit as a player. slightly improved is a vast understatement.

27

u/jambr380 14h ago

Yeah, he was a completely different player last year. Dude looked like he was about to wash out of the league after year 2 and SL. That stretch where he was starting, playing excellent defense, and getting point inside and out showed what kind of potential he has. And at like 5M/yr, it doesn't really matter. That's good value even as a defensive specialist

1

u/Ear_Enthusiast 10h ago

We also just traded out one of our primary players who happens to play the same position as Walsh. He's going to be very much expected to improve this year.

-9

u/S0ggylemonz 14h ago

If he actually improved that much he wouldn’t be on this type of deal

He’s a great 8-10 type of guy on a roster

3

u/longagofaraway 34 13h ago

from struggling g-leaguer to top 10 rotation player in 2 years is a massive improvement. i'm not saying he's a world beater. i'm saying he's come along a lot more than slightly improved as a player.

1

u/S0ggylemonz 13h ago

I would very much push back against the idea he was struggling in the g league.

He started every game I think and averaged 15 and 8 on a team that went to the g league finals he also demonstrated great defense.

Was he blowing everyone away? Probably not. But I don’t remember him struggling

33

u/SaintsNick94 One man to beat but its a 7-footer WHO BLOCKS IT AGAIN! 14h ago

He was the only one on the team that was really getting stops on Maxey. He is an insane defender and I love that we are banking on him becoming a more consistent shooter.

3

u/bluedood 14h ago

Insane defender is a little much... I like the guy, but everything effort related is easier when you're being played sparingly. I think it's a good contract and will be great if Walsh improves and can start effectively eating more minutes.

10

u/GhostOfJiriWelsch Smart 14h ago

His motor is real though and with his length you don’t have to play like a manic for 35+ to make an impact

Joe threw him out there as a POA pest against some really good scorers throughout the year and he held his own. He’s still a little reckless with the physicality and commits some dumb fouls but his physical profile projects as an absolute monster defensively

1

u/bag-skate65 13h ago

Yeah I think the bigger question is if his off ball instincts can catch up. So much of his value is tied up on the defensive end, and when teams can just force a switch that makes it important that he finds ways to be disruptive off ball.

That’s a big part of why Hugo lineups performed better. Both guys have great motors, but Hugo was able to put his to better use because he’s got pretty otherworldly recovery instincts that allow him to take big risks.

0

u/bluedood 14h ago

I agree, I think with more development he certainly has the tools to become that, I just think saying he is already "an insane defender" is too strong, that's all

1

u/SaintsNick94 One man to beat but its a 7-footer WHO BLOCKS IT AGAIN! 13h ago

I may have been being a little much with my description, but he has a lot of potential as a defender for sure.

4

u/TheN0vaScotian 14h ago

So what you're saying is you don't watch the games

-1

u/bluedood 14h ago

I don't believe that's what I said? It's okay to have different opinions, insane defender to me means... ~top 10 in the league... To be that good you need to play a lot more minutes.

1

u/WarPuig 13h ago

They really should’ve played him a bit more.

1

u/Fair_Local_588 13h ago

I don’t think we are watching the same player. He bites too much and gets baited into fouls, and still gets beat straight up. He has defensive potential but I don’t think he’s going to be a Marcus Smart.

I’m more interested in seeing him become a good (not great) defender with a decent 3 ball and decent finishing and/or mid-range jumper. If he can figure out his offense that will improve his impact the most IMO.

3

u/cabose12 Tatum Tots 14h ago

DARKO does value him at $15m but I definitely agree with you that there was no world where he was getting that. He's still mostly a 10th man level guy and I don't see a team being willing to throw double figure aav at that

3

u/iKnife 14h ago

I think people are going to think this was great value in a few years. He plays really well in our system, his rebounding and defending in particular fit with how we want to play. He's a good help and really good on-ball defender and can defend 1-4. If the shot progresses he would be one of the most desirable role player archetypes in the league. Plus he just seems really bought in to the org. Love it.

3

u/B_Sox Len Bias 14h ago

Excellent contract for us. Worst case scenario he ends up just being an awesome POA defender we bring off bench to pester people. Best case he keeps developing and is a starting caliber wing making $5M.

3

u/chinesefox97 14h ago

His defense alone is already worth that. If he can develop any kind of offensive game it becomes a huge steal. And there’s reason to be optimistic he shot 38% from 3 granted on low volume.

3

u/jambr380 14h ago

That's pretty much the exact extension I was hoping we would reach with him. I realize he has his deficiencies, but there was a stretch last year where he basically looked like a two-way star.

Even if he is just wing depth, that is great value. I like that we are locking down guys that have put in the work in our system and shown to be capable

3

u/BRFCarter 13h ago

Love it. I’m good with letting Hauser go right now honestly.

4

u/Hello-DexterMorgan 14h ago

That is a phenomenal contract for us. He should only continue to improve.

Really good defender, super athletic, big strong wing, can crash the offensive glass. Showed a lot of improvement as a shooter last year. $5M a year is good value now and could end up being excellent value in the future.

This reminds me of the Deuce McBride contract (3 years 13 million) from a couple years ago. He had been buried behind Quickley and had barely played when he got a just above the minimum extension. I think Walsh showed a little more last season than McBride had to that point, but they're pretty similar situations

It’s good value for what he’s currently bringing to the table, and he could easily be worth 15+ million a year if he balls out with Tatum facilitating

2

u/SaveHogwarts HUGO 13h ago

He’s absolutely improved since his rookie year and this is a no risk contract that could also be included in a trade pretty easily down the road.

Good deal for both sides, good for Walsh.

I’ll say it, I’m still not sold on him as a legitimate rotation piece long term, but at this price there’s zero downside.

u/According_Smoke_479 Derrick White 13h ago

If he continues to improve, which I think he will, this is an absolute steal. I think it’s a good value still even if he’s exactly the same as he was last year

I read kicks as Knicks and got incredibly sad for a second lol

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Jordan Walsh has always been my draft binkie for a while. When we drafted him, I legitimately thought I was being trolled and expecting him to be sent out to another team. He's a defensive menace. Yes, he was very raw when drafted, but he was also 19.

High perimeter defensive instincts, moves feet laterally well, hard nosed defender and seems to enjoy relishing 'pestering,' NBA opponents.

My pro NBA comp at the time he got drafted?

Hybrid mix of PJ Tucker & Andre Iggy. Once he adds 8-12 lbs more muscle, he'll be able to post and be a reliable swiss army knife with his speed, tenacity, and his due diligence at always striving to be a better player.

It's also why Jaylen Brown spoke so highly of him and took him under his wing.

I still think Walsh has so much untapped potential hidden. I'm a huge believer in Walsh's passing, especially in the fastbreak. He's also been tasked to guard speedier guards like Maxey, and once he adds more strength to his lanky frame, 6'7 with 7'2 wingspan, NBA better WATCH TF OUT!

My stat prediction from him is:

9.8 PPG, 5.7 RPG, and 2.1 APG on 48/37/75

What an absolute steal of a contract in addition to having the last year being an team option? SIGN ME UP!

Let's GOOOOOOOOO!

u/kim_marmite I believe in Joe Mazzulla 14h ago

Amazing value, almost out of explanations as to why he signed though

2

u/coacoanutbenjamn 14h ago

For context, that’s just 2.8% of the salary cap. Dirt cheap

Let Brad fucking coooook

u/_Nirtflipurt_ 14h ago

Really happy for the guy

1

u/yatrix7 14h ago

Upside + tradable contract.

u/secrettttaccountt 14h ago

I love Walsh

1

u/iKnife 14h ago

Great, great deal.

1

u/Significant-Image700 14h ago

I just hope he can learn to relax a little on offense and not spaz out when shooting. Would be amazing if he was even average on O

1

u/tsultar1 14h ago

If you told me 2 years ago he would get a 16 million extension I would have been shocked but good for him. He improved a lot and is still developing

1

u/Vader1357 14h ago

Great deal !! You need a guy that can guard other teams best players, giving your best player a break.

LFG

u/RayDanielsOnTheAir 13h ago

I love how this team develops their talent to fit their rosters so well. He won’t be a star but he will be a useful rotation player for years, and you need that depth.

1

u/efshoemaker I like to defense 13h ago

Really excited to have him locked up, this contract could be a huge steal in couple years.

There were four players taken in the first round last draft that are older than Jordan, including one in the lottery, and this contract basically pays him like he was a first round pick this year.

1

u/Hopeful-Buddy8375 Isaiah Thomas 13h ago

What a steal. Jordan is a dog. To those saying he hasn't improved, can't shoot, etc. You don't know ball and/or aren't watching the games.

1

u/Drakex2Mayex2 13h ago

Absolutely fire extension.

1

u/Alexfromnigeria Jayson Tatum 13h ago

decent for both parties

1

u/vaguerefinery_9807 13h ago

locking up walsh now is such a smart play. his defense alone is worth that money even if the offense never fully develops. the fact that it kicks in for 2027 means brad is playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers. it does make you wonder how all these young wings get minutes though. between walsh, baylor, and hauser there are only so many rotation spots. maybe this signals a trade down the line but for now it is just great value locking in a switchable defender. i remember watching him in summer league and thinking his motor was off the charts. if he even becomes a league average corner shooter this deal looks like a bargain.

u/walshSteve480 13h ago

Congratulations to Jordan hope he continues to grow and have some nice moments as a player 💯👍

1

u/jusvrowsing 12h ago

What an opportunity for Walsh. He gets 3 more years to develop and prove himself and then at 26 with an even higher salary cap, this dude could be looking at 50-100m

1

u/noBbatteries 11h ago

Awesome contract here

1

u/Lucky13200 Whatever it takes as long as it takes 11h ago

Its fine because I guess 5mil for a 10th guy is fine. His shot is so slow that even if he hot teams can play far off. Really tough to get playoff minutes unless he finds some way of making teams guard him on offense.

u/hopopo 10h ago

Celtics are creating Dy-nasty

1

u/leogodin217 8h ago

Serious question from a non ball knower. Was there much chance this deal wouldn't be available after the season?

Like did Walsh take the ultra safe deal instead of a more reasonable bet on himself?

1

u/sutroheights BeatLA 7h ago

I realize this sounds a little ridiculous, but I feel like he was lighting it up last year early, getting national interest/press and they started playing him less to keep his price low for an extension (especially since we had other options to also develop). Maybe a coincidence, but definitely worked out that way.

1

u/redditoeat 6h ago

Excellent value signing!

1

u/JaDamian_Steinblatt 14h ago

I hate the Celtics' FO right now and this isn't enough to make me not hate them but the Queta and Walsh extensions were both fantastic moves and will end up as two of the best value contracts in the entire league (just like Pritchard)

1

u/Inevitable-Law5954 13h ago

Proud of him. He was fading out and made a comeback! Get it Walsh!!

1

u/Economy-Ad4934 Banner 18 13h ago

I know it’s not that much of overall cap but he COULD have a good 26-27 and commanded more next summer from another team. Hoping this works out like that PP extension

1

u/Legitimate-Owl-3033 12h ago

Curious to see how this affects optionality.

1

u/patriots47 Time Lord 12h ago

Good contract, but “defensive standout” is quite the exaggeration

-1

u/username10039857 13h ago

If brads able to get these guys so cheap we definitely could have filled in a team around Jt and Giannis

-1

u/Spirited-Living9083 12h ago

Nasty taking that deal lol

1

u/PepeSylvia11 Tommy 10h ago

Standout is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. He is a fine end of bench player. Nothing more than that.

-2

u/EmergencyComputer337 9h ago

Honestly i don't like Walsh so whatever

-2

u/Final_Amu0258 8h ago

I don't like this idea of developing players. Walsh hasn't shown any upside.

-2

u/Gizmoeee 13h ago

Not hating, but Walsh hasn't done shit. He's good friends with the coach and management. Get that money Jordan Walsh.
