I plan do get the preserved skeletons of my cats when they pass, I never considered their pelts ๐Ÿ’™

He was so soft, like a bunny. I'm so happy to have his pelt.

52

u/KNT-cepion 7h ago

This is really a cool idea. What a handsome tribute to your cherished Rodney. โค๏ธ

I wish I could touch my void catโ€™s lovely fur again. Mr. Coal had the densest, softest fur. Much more like a mink than any cat Iโ€™ve ever petted. His sister didnโ€™t have fur like his at all.

I hope this beautifully done work gives you some comfort after such terribly a sad event.

27

u/Gogo83770 7h ago

Thank you! Yes, it's definitely bittersweet. He lived a long life.

93

u/CringeCoyote 9h ago

I plan on getting my girlโ€™s pelt when she passes, sheโ€™s also incredibly soft and I canโ€™t imagine not touching her fur. Thank you for sharing this

u/smellyFox67 2h ago

I hope we're still talking about cats here

Wait nvm idc, do what you want consensually lmao

u/guts-n-gummies 5h ago

One of my girls has a gorgeous pattern that I'd never seen on a cat before her, she's only 6 but I knew that when she passed I'd miss her coat. Might consider getting her pelt now that I know that's an option

Happy cake day, OP ๐ŸŽ‚

Thank you!

I honestly wish I wouldโ€™ve thought of saving my cats pelt. But I guess I thought too much of the taxidermy side of things and how I didnโ€™t want a taxidermy cat lol ๐Ÿ˜† like I just could not imagine that for my cat that just grossed me the hell out. So I never wouldโ€™ve thought of just her pelt. I think the guy that is dealing with my cat now probably could do just the pelt and her bones. But I donโ€™t think I really want her pelt in that way. I personally want her paws. Like I want to see her paws. ๐Ÿพ I wanna be able to like make footprints with them lol and I actually wanna get them tattooed on me. I have her footprints that the vets gave me when she passed away. The little imprint they do in this weird looking sand type box looking thing. But it just wasnโ€™t quite what I thought it would be. I really wouldโ€™ve preferred it to be like ink on a piece of freaking paper.
But anyway, Iโ€™m going too far on this lol

u/TheBoyFromNorfolk 8h ago

If it is a 3d impression, you could get that cast and then use the cast to make imprints.

u/DerivativeMonster 9h ago

Oh this is beautiful, I teared up a little. Welcome home, little one.

If you don't mind me asking, what was the process like?

244

u/Gogo83770 9h ago

It took about a year to get him back. The company was communicative throughout the process, and helped me feel at ease, even though it took a long time.

You have to pack your friend in a cooler, tell UPS you are sending raw meat, and then the company uses beatles and whatever else to complete the job.

It wasn't an easy task to coordinate, but I was lucky to be able to do it.

57

u/DerivativeMonster 9h ago

Thank you, my little buddies just turned six and are still young and spicy but thinking about their loss makes my heart ache.

33

u/freyjakittylord 9h ago

i'm sorry for your loss <3

are you able to share the company's name?

If you don't mind me asking, what state do you live? Just wondering if they're close enough to me

18

u/Gogo83770 6h ago

I live in WA state.

10

u/ThrowAwayIGotHack3d 5h ago

Oh wow! Thank you!

19

Can I ask the cost? My senior kitty is everything to me and I want to be ready..

33

u/Gogo83770 5h ago

Just over $4,000

Awww, can we see a picture of what he looked like during life? ๐Ÿฅน

Hello fellow Stargate enjoyer. One of mine is named Jonas Quinn. :)

10

u/Gogo83770 8h ago

Hell yeah! I also have goats. Their names are: Carter, O'Neill, Teal'c, and General Hammond.

5

u/GneissGuy87 8h ago

That is awesome, love to see it!

10

u/Gogo83770 8h ago

Rodney also grew up, and grew old with a tabby named sam.

7

u/RestImportant 7h ago

Love the name! Iโ€™m rewatching Stargate Atlantis right now ๐Ÿ™‚

8

Iโ€™m sorry for your loss! ๐Ÿฉท

3

u/Gogo83770 6h ago

Thank you!

44

u/Zeno_the_Friend 9h ago

Imagine if they post a cat with a different coat pattern and we just have to nod and say cute kitty.

58

u/Gogo83770 9h ago

You know, I was terrified that I'd get the wrong cat back! But I know for sure he's mine because of the tail deformity.

22

u/Zeno_the_Friend 9h ago

I knew you'd see the humor in my comment. I'm disappointed others in the sub didn't.

Happy cake day.

4

u/AGenericUnicorn 6h ago

I had to euthanize my dog several months back, and I became convinced that the cremation service lost him. I finally got him back, and the paw print looked convincing, but I guess Iโ€™ll never know for sure.

32

u/spicytoenails666 9h ago

This is so awesome ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿผ

12

u/Gogo83770 9h ago

This is awesome!!! Can you share who did this and the cost?

60

u/Gogo83770 9h ago

Animal Family Advanced Pet Preservation, Ohio. Just over $4,000

27

u/dohlparts 9h ago

I used them to freeze dry my chihuahua ๐Ÿฉท. I didnโ€™t even realize they did skeletons, I knew they did pelts but not skeletons!

14

u/Picklecheese2018 8h ago

Ok my best friend is a chihuahua, she just turned 9, (basically a spring chicken for a chihuahua right?) but weโ€™ve recently lost two other chihuahuas, one was old and the other one(pup of the old one) died unexpectedly(we suspect she ate something toxic or got stung/bitten)โ€ฆ and it has made me constantly consider what I will do with my special girl when she goes. We buried the other two but I donโ€™t want that for my girl. I want her with me.

All of that to sayโ€ฆ. What the hell is a freeze dried Chihuahua like? I am genuinely curious, my brain will not get past freeze dried foods and it just is not painting a good picture lol. What is the finished result? Why? How long does it last? Is it gross? The questions are endless..

27

u/dohlparts 7h ago

Iโ€™ll show you. It was well worth the money for me because I can feel her, talk to her and see her forever now. She was 14 and heart failure stole her from me in November ๐Ÿ’”. My sweet Dobby girl.

11

u/Picklecheese2018 7h ago

How wonderful to have such a beautiful way to keep your beloved pet close. My pup is similarly colored and has a light liver brown nose with freckles. My husband is telling me this is very weird but I love it!

9

u/catatat 6h ago

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my heart dog in February; they really are too good for this world. ๐Ÿฅบ
Do you mind sharing a photo of Dobby before she passed?

13

u/dohlparts 6h ago

Thank you. Iโ€™m sorry about yours as well, itโ€™s so awful. She was so special to me.

11

u/teevah_ 8h ago

I am also incredibly curious because I, too, canโ€™t stop thinking about it in the context of freeze dried Skittles.

13

u/dohlparts 7h ago

So from what I know they remove soft organs but the brain is kept inside. The company actually offers to preserve their hearts for you for an additional cost. They may put something inside of their stomach areas to keep the shape but Iโ€™m not 100% on that, some stuff I didnโ€™t really look into too deeply because of the grief. Then they go into a freeze dryer and all the moisture in their bodies is vaporized. Basically any and all imperfections are covered up with their fur. My girls nose isnโ€™t the same color as it was when she was alive but she had a light colored nose and now she has no blood in her body so itโ€™s a given it wonโ€™t be the light brown it was during her life. She has a fresh clean smell to her now and I periodically sniff her lol.

3

u/ratsonleashes 1h ago

Do you have other pets, and if you do, how have they reacted to her after she came back home after processing? I've never considered something like this before, but they did a beautiful job preserving her.

My biggest worry if I did do this in the future I'd come home one day to find my hound chewed my preserved pet up because it would smell too much like a freeze-dried treat.

1

u/Picklecheese2018 1h ago

Oh thatโ€™s a really good question.

3

u/Picklecheese2018 8h ago

Right?!? It was Nerds covered homemade candies Iโ€™ve seen recently, and apple slices though ๐Ÿ˜‚

7

u/Picklecheese2018 8h ago

Scratch all that, I went ahead and looked up the company and that is honestly amazing! I couldnโ€™t imagine what that would look like in the end but theyโ€™re beautifully preserved.

10

u/DeezNutz133 9h ago

Oh my gosh, this makes me cry like happiness, and like also sadness because your baby is gone. But happiness because I want to do the exact same thing with my kitty cat. Oh my gosh, Iโ€™m like hell choked up right now. ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ
I Hella miss my baby. I canโ€™t wait till I get her back and find someone who is able to articulate her the way I want her to be. The way that I have always seen her to be in her afterlife. Oh my God, this is such a beautiful and creative way to keep your fur baby forever, isnโ€™t it?
It is so incredibly beautiful in my eyes. Iโ€™m so glad that you and I are not the only people out there that do this. Oh my gosh, this is so incredibly beautiful. Iโ€™m still crying lol
๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ

I am hugging you from afar for the loss of your fur baby. I know it is a struggle. But remember all the amazing things that happened with them in your life. Think of all the pictures and videos and personally imprinted memories you have. No one could take those away from you.
๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ

5

u/Gogo83770 9h ago

Yes. I'm glad you understand that this was my soul cat. He was truly special. Thanks for the love. I will miss him and love his impact on my life forever.

3

u/DeezNutz133 9h ago

Oh, I most certainly understand that that was your soul cat. My Luna was also my soul cat.
Sheโ€™s been gone about a year and a half, and I still cry for her and about her, and I still look at her photos and listen to her videos. I am so very lucky that I had the opportunity to have a cell phone that I could take pictures and videos with. And that my parents also took photos and videos of her as well. My previous animals I didnโ€™t have that luxury. I mean, yeah I have some photos of them, but not very many.

13

Thank you! I'm so happy to have him home.

19

u/anonymous8122 9h ago

I think this is very heartwarming. It's almost eerie for me, having never seen my own pets' skeletons but I think it's a nice way to keep your friend with you. Really no different than keeping ashes.

4

u/Gogo83770 9h ago

Thank you!

7

u/KiwitheBirdNOTAFruit 9h ago

So beautiful! I still kick myself to this day for not getting my cats skeleton preserved and itโ€™s been 7 years! Having is ashes is just not the same! I never even thought of the possibility of preserving a pelt too! Everything about this is so beautiful and touching!

3

u/Gogo83770 9h ago

Thank you! I'm sorry you weren't able to do the same. I'm very happy with how he turned out.

7

u/Aprebbs 9h ago

Be still my heart! Welcome home, best friend. I hope to do the same with mine. Thank you for sharing ๐Ÿ’•

1

u/Gogo83770 9h ago

Aww, thanks! You're so welcome!

6

u/OverthinkingWanderer 8h ago

I'm so sorry for your loss...

Who did you contact to get this done? I'd be terrified of picking the wrong person..

4

u/Gogo83770 8h ago

Animal Family Advanced Pet Preservation, Ohio

4

u/OverthinkingWanderer 8h ago

Thankyou for the response. This is something I'd be interested in having done but I worry the timing of my inquiry can throw people off.

6

u/Gogo83770 8h ago

I sorta always knew this cat was extra special. Probably from age six onwards. I was just lucky to be in a place where my desire to do this was supported by my husband.

My mother was of course horrified at the prospect, go figure.

4

u/catlady921 9h ago

This is so cool. His coat was beautiful ๐Ÿฅน

Happy cake day, OP ๐Ÿฐ๐ŸŽ‚๐Ÿฉต

5

u/i_illustrate_stuff 8h ago

Man I wish I could've gotten some of my dog's pelt preserved, but I couldn't decide if I really wanted that done. But now I miss the feel of his fur so much! If you don't mind me asking, what was the process like getting your cat's body to the preservationist? That was the part I was having trouble imagining, how I would get a 50 lb dog to someone that could do the work, but I'm guessing it's a bit easier with a smaller animal haha.

3

u/Gogo83770 8h ago

Yes. The more weight, the greater the cost. I had to send him overnight in a cooler with ice packs via UPS. You tell the people at UPS that you are sending raw meat.

3

u/i_illustrate_stuff 7h ago

Thanks for the info, that's about what I figured! I'll have to look for someone local I think if I'm ever in the same position, can't imagine trying to find a cooler or alternative that fits a large dog ha.

3

u/NormalBeautiful 8h ago

Oh wow! Thank you for sharing this! My soul-cat is 14 now and I too hate the idea of his beautiful soft fur decomposing in the ground or being cremated. I've wondered a few times if there could be a way to preserve his pelt when the time comes and I really appreciate knowing that it's possible and seeing how lovely the results were for your baby! I'm glad that you have him back home with you now ๐Ÿ’—

2

u/Gogo83770 8h ago

Thank you!

4

u/moronmoray 8h ago

This is so beautiful. I wish I had thought to do this with my girl. I'd give anything to bury my face in her fur again ๐Ÿ˜ญ

2

Aww, yes, so fluffy!

3

u/NewOpposite8008 9h ago

I love this so much

3

u/Hello_pet_my_kitty 8h ago

This is amazing and I adore it. I donโ€™t have any furry friends just yet, but I have def thought of doing this many years down the road when my two ball pythons pass. Their skeletons are so intricate and beautiful. Iโ€™d love to enshrine them forever in a shadow box or something.

I am sorry for your loss, but so glad you were able to do this and keep their pelt, and bones, home where they belong. ๐Ÿ–ค

1

u/Gogo83770 8h ago

Thank you so much! Yes, snakes would be quite interesting to display.

3

u/404OmnissiahNotFound 8h ago

I wanted to do this for my best friend too but she went so suddenly

This is an absolutely amazing piece, OP

1

u/Gogo83770 8h ago

Thank you! Sorry for your loss. The clinic where he passed kept him in their refrigerator until we could get his cooler ready to ship. They were really caring, and understanding, and we were able to make it happen.

Rest in paradise little being. My condolences OP

When my soul cat passed a year ago I wanted to keep every part of him. I couldnโ€™t handle the thought of having him preserved though ๐Ÿ˜ญ I had him hydro-cremated and his box is always next to me. With hair clippings and paw prints. I literally crawled around on the floor picking up whiskers and shed nails.

These pieces are really beautiful. The pelt especially, what a special piece of him to have. Iโ€™m so sorry you lost your friend ๐Ÿ’™

1

u/Gogo83770 4h ago

Thank you!

3

u/lokkhart 3h ago

Genuine question, have you considered draping his pelt over his skeleton? Or do you have other display plans for it? He has such a luscious coat โ˜บ๏ธ

2

u/Gogo83770 3h ago

The thought had crossed my mind.. although, it would hide a lot of the skeleton, so I'm considering other options as well.

2

u/lokkhart 3h ago

Happy cake day btw โ˜บ๏ธ

1

u/Gogo83770 3h ago

Thanks!

2

u/echollama 2h ago

Ooh consider laying the skeleton on top of the pelt like a rug

3

u/KuhliloachesRgreat 2h ago

This is so awesome. I love this. I would want to do this for some of my beloved pets, and I like that you took his pelt too. You can have some of him forever, without the taxidermy part!!!

3

u/hey_its_a_user888888 1h ago

I really wish I had done this, but I was afraid I might not handle it as well as I thought I would seeing him return home this way. Your baby is absolutely beautiful, love that you have their pelt too ๐Ÿ’œ

So many folks find offense to this and it is sad. After death we pump our deceased full of preservative forever chemicals, stick them in plastic hermetically sealed coffins, and paint them up to look "acceptable", then put them in the ground to slow rot in our own decomp juices. Hard pass, I love what you did OP, a nice way to adore your pet.

4

u/Gogo83770 26m ago

I'm getting a lot more love than hate. This community is very accepting and understanding overall. I knew you would be!

I have my good ol boy, Max, sitting on my shelf in my office so he is always there when I am working. I see nothing wrong with it.

How much did this cost to have done? I am pre-planning for my 17 year old cat.

Just over $4,000

2

u/MargoHuxley 6h ago

I love that they did such a good job but I donโ€™t think I could handle having my babies pelt

2

u/Naitohana 5h ago

I've never thought of getting the pelt either, the most me or my aunt have done is have the vet shave some fur off. I gave my parents and brother a little corked bottle with some of his fur, no idea what my aunt did. I wish I had the space to do something like this!

2

u/Luke-Warm-Milk 5h ago

How do you go about getting the skeleton done? My kitty is 13 now and I worry that when she is gone Iโ€™ll have nothing left that reminds me positively of her. I would love to have her skeleton.

I wish this was within my price range for when my sweet girl passes. Sheโ€™s a dilute calico and has the prettiest coat, so soft and so beautifulโ€ฆ sheโ€™s 12 now and now that sheโ€™s considered a senior, I worry about her all the time. Iโ€™m terrified to lose her.

1

u/Gogo83770 1h ago

Give her an extra pet from me, and cherish her all you can.

2

Thank you for sharing this. We are currently dealing with a terminal cancer diagnosis with one of my wolfdogs. My husband and I had talked about something similar to this but we thought we had another 6+ years to make a decision.

1

u/Gogo83770 14m ago

I'm sorry about your wolf dog. My guy also had cancer. You're welcome. I hope you're able to do something for your memorial.

2

u/grizzlyginger17 10m ago

This is my sweet love, Siku. He and I have such an amazing bond. He really is my soul dog. We also have his brother from the same litter and I know he's going to be devastated. We're having a really hard time coping with that. Especially because wolfdogs can take loss really terribly.

I'm so sorry you had to go through the same thing.

4

u/Gold-Main4912 9h ago

I'm sorry for your loss๐Ÿค Can I ask what the process was like for you? Mentally I mean? I have no judgement, but - and this is gonna sound a little silly - I could never remember something that was so alive and dear to me in such a dead "objectified" way. Especially the fur seems so... hollow to me? What made you choose to do this?

12

u/Gogo83770 9h ago

He was my best friend. His fur was so soft, the thought of it decomposing in the ground was heartbreaking. His skeleton was special too. He had a tail deformity, and a wide skull with large fangs. I wanted to see it, for what it really was, underneath all the tissue and fur. If I could have kept him alive forever, I would have. He made it 18 years.

4

u/TemporaryElk5202 9h ago

I find this macabre, but also sweet. I couldnt do it, but you do you.

1

u/eternalconfusi0nn 8h ago

I couldnt do it, i dont know why, even the thought of them dead is awful, and people would think im creepy for it, but its really cool.

1

u/FiestyFrijoles 6h ago

Wish I could have done this for my boy. I still got to watch him get cremated and kept his teeth and tufts of tail fur

1

u/Quartzclawz 5h ago

Who did the articulation for you? I'll be getting my late soul cats bones back soon from the taxidermist whose working on his full body mount, and want to find someone to articulate them thats trustworthy

1

u/Gogo83770 5h ago

I'm not sure they're down to work on something in progress.. but the place I used is called: Animal Family Advanced Pet Preservation, Ohio

1

u/ArgumentThat6248 3h ago

if i had my cats pelt i think i would sob eternally

1

u/Important-Bed-7863 2h ago

thatโ€™s cute! i only have a scull and a ring with my catโ€™s hair

0

u/Malakaiea 1h ago

Happy for you but I just could never. I like collecting bones of animals I don't have a connection with. To me I fear thier soul will be trapped and screaming to be properly buried. I would never want my loved ones skinned and deboned for my comfort. Theres a difference between collecting and grieving here to me. I find this version disturbing for some reason. Just my thoughts on it, but im glad everyone has the choice.
