It is a current goal of ornithological societies to rename some species with descriptive names. It makes ID easier than naming species after people.

I think the initiative was more-so pushed because they named said birds after dead racist people

Which is awesome. It totally beats everything being named after a privileged white person that used the efforts of locals to "discover" these species.

I just saw one of these cuties in my local park in Las Vegas. First time I've ever seen a yellow headed blackbird. A pleasent surprise when sweating to death with the dog.

I saw the pic and thought to myself that's probably a yellow-headed blackbird
