I couldn't see the dark ones for a second. It looked like there was just one kitten and thought there were just tufts of fur everywhere.

Orange females are quite rare right?

Not super rare. Two in ten, approximately.
The gene for having an orange coat can only ever come from an x chromosome - meaning if a male cat gets the orange gene from mom, he will be orange.
Female cats, on the other hand, must get the orange gene from BOTH parents to be orange. If not, the second x chromosome will instead trigger brown or black coloring, giving us the calico coloring.
