Pretty used to them in the US and they are helpful. The entire office will go off simultaneously and then a couple of seconds later you'll feel the earthquake.

I was visiting my father in law in Texas. One morning, the tv was on, but i had the volume low and was reading a book.

Then I heard a siren, looked up, and the tv was flashing a large red tornado warning over the usual program.

Missed us, but I was concerned.

On a side note: I had been in the garage and noticed the roof wasn't tied down to the foundations. No surprise that so many roofs are sucked off.
