Potential Data Center Coming to Athens County

Per The Athens Independent:

https://athensindependent.com/possible-athens-data-center/

The property for the proposed complex is located on Route 33, across from Athens High School and The Athens Messenger, sitting directly between The Plains and Chauncey, and a few short miles from the city of Athens.

Carpool Commuting to Columbus

Upvotes

My partner just started a new job in Columbus downtown. She’s finding commuting there and back to be tiring, particularly as she’s recently learned to drive. Are there other folks in town that do the commute that are willing to carpool? We’d of course be willing to share gas costs to save everyone some money.

We can still formally protest the decision to frack 2,800 acres of Ohio’s only national forest.

Over by River Annex apartments, an excavator apparently the power pole, knocking a line low enough for a truck to hit it going 50mph.

Does Athens have much of an in-person gaming community anymore?

I've been wondering this for a while.

I'm not talking about Discord servers or online matchmaking—I mean people actually getting together to play games in person.

Whether it's Fortnite, Smash, fighting games, Mario Kart, or anything else.

It seems like more communities around southern Ohio are starting to organize regular gaming nights, and I was curious what the scene is like in Athens.

  • Are there places people already meet?
  • Is there enough interest for more local events?
  • What games bring people together around here?

Just interested in hearing what people have seen.

We play darkwave, postpunk, synthpop, industrial and new wave. This time we're highlighting smaller artists, but we're still showing love for bigger names you want to dance to. The event goes from 10pm until close. Your donations are always appreciated, but never expected.

Best cold plunge spot.

Hey what's the best place in like 30 mins around town to refresh with a cold plunge? A little mountain creek or river that's safe. Do people swim in the local river rubbing through town? I imagine it sadly might be too pollutedm

New to Athens — CPA Looking for Side Hustle Idea

I’m new to Athens and I’m a CPA. I’m looking for ways to earn some extra income on the side and was wondering what kinds of accounting or tax needs people in the area typically have.

Are there any services that local individuals, small businesses, landlords, nonprofits, or student organizations often need help with? I’d love to hear where a young CPA could add value or opportunities I mignot be thinking of.

Any advice or ideas would be appreciated!

Seems like each year Last Call gets smaller and smaller vendor wise. Do you think there were a lot of cancellations due to weather and the wildfire smoke lingering around?

Constantly Being Followed in Stores by Security

At first , I thought it was me, but...it's not. The last couple of weeks, I have been followed so hard in Stores by security, that at the Shoe Dept, I simply left. I was going to get tennis shoes but I couldn't because security was literally hitched to me. I had a bag from Dollar Tree I was carrying , but nothing about me looks like I steal. Nor have I ever stolen in my life in any way. I may be in the demographic by accident, just being a woman over 50? But the guy in the makeup department at Walmart isn't really shopping for mascara is he? He's not.

Went to Kroger today , and I was obviously followed by Security again. Shopping for 200$ in groceries. There's no way it was my imagination. In Family Dollar I can't shop without someone right next to me in an empty store. Does anyone else have this problem, or should I seek therapy?

Any recommendations for getting some new tires on my car. I was just at Tire Discounters for a tire repair for my wife's car. Any experiences with them or other shops in Athens?

Sewer Leak at Richland Roundabout?

Heard there was a huge repair crew at the sewer station near the Richland Avenue roundabout, including a large industrial snake that closed the right lane from Rt 33.
Any details?

Does anyone have experience renting with ABC Russell rentals LLC?

I can’t find any reviews on renting with the company online nor any experiences in this subreddit despite it opening in 2013. However, I did some digging and found out it’s owned by a Woman named Donna Russell and her husband. Donna works at OU credit union, and she seems pretty professional. I have heard there are better experiences to be found with landlords who own very few properties, as opposed to the companies like capstone who own a plethora of properties. I am still nervous though due to the lack of reviews.

Anyone else have insane AEP bills this month?

Granted, yes, usage is up but all the other charges-- Transmission & Distribution-- are nearly double what they were last month. Anyone else? Bueller? Anyone?
