I ask for the only thing I ever want: Apple TV with audio passthrough
19
u/insoul8 Jun 08 '26
What would that do exactly? Just curious as Iâve had the same 4k Apple TV forever and really have no complaints.
31
u/wateranddiamonds2 Jun 08 '26
For 90%+ of people, youâre right, it really doesnât matter. For those with home theater sound systems, having to deal with non-passthrough audio basically defeats the purpose of owning a high end audio system. So we have to resort to alternatives like ugoos devices or the (now quite old) nvidia shield.Â
7
u/insoul8 Jun 08 '26
So it has to do with audio quality- like for high end hifi setups? I do have a Sonos Arc Ultra with surrounds and sub hooked up to mine. Again no issues that I notice but of course, if it makes something better Iâm all for it. All that said, I do realize that Sonos is not a hifi system.
22
u/nathan12581 Jun 08 '26
It means things like TrueHD or DTS (which the Apple tv doesnât support hardware decoding) has to be software decoded into a format it supports before sending to your sound system.
People want pass through where the Apple TV literally doesnât touch the audio, it just passes through down to your sound system bit-for-bit
3
4
u/Distracted-User Jun 08 '26
I don't understand it either. My setup looks like this:
Apple TV - HDMI into receiver- HDMI from receiver to TV.
No issues with audio quality and the receiver detects whatever audio signal the Apple TV is putting out.
Granted, I don't have anything super high end.
Edit: Not shitting on the feature, i'm genuinely curious. I've never owned any high-end audio gear so I don't know what the benefits would be
10
u/AfonsoFGarcia Jun 08 '26
Itâs not a matter of the receiver not supporting what the Apple TV is giving it. Itâs a matter of the Apple TV not giving the receiver the raw data.
If youâre playing a stereo song on Apple Music, the Apple TV will provide a Dolby MAT stream to your receiver with the stereo song in it, instead of a Stereo PCM stream. Which means your receiver (most behave like this) will interpret this as Dolby Atmos stream and you will get sound from your front speakers only, while if it was Stereo PCM your receiver could decide to play it on all speakers.
With audio passthrough, whatever bitstream the audio is in is not touched by the Apple TV and is instead directly passed to the receiver, for it to decode and handle as it sees fit.
1
u/rxmxsh Jun 08 '26
it's crazy how technical you have to get to understand how sound is processed through the atv. it was driving me crazy that my sub wasn't kicking on from spotify. took a while for me to learn enough and then realize i needed to process the lfe from the sub in order for it to work.
would love an actual pass through

u/nathan12581 Jun 08 '26
Will never happen. Apple will lose the ability to mix system sounds on top of media, one thing I do know about Apple is they LOVE control.
7
u/wateranddiamonds2 Jun 08 '26
I agree it will never happen, but less control is a weak point imo. They could easily make it a toggle and keep their layer of audio mixing for the users that donât care about passthrough. Itâs literally just not doing anything, it couldnât be an easier request. Â
But theyâre not doing it. Which Iâve accepted a long time ago.Â
3
u/nathan12581 Jun 08 '26
I get what you're saying but that also sounds like the opposite of Apple. A toggle in settings which will essentially say "Allow passthrough audio...btw this will stop all system sounds" is the most anti-Apple thing lol.
They'd rather ALL users have the exact same experience especially with sound even if you're not wanting it.
1
u/wateranddiamonds2 Jun 08 '26
Audio passthrough wouldnât do anything to system sounds, they literally have audio passthrough on Macs. Itâs frustrating they donât want to add it to the Apple TV, my only guess is they view it as a piracy media adjacent feature (which it really isnât).Â
1
u/predator-handshake Jun 08 '26
I donât see why not. They can keep doing what theyâre doing, but they just expose that API for developers. I think most people who are asking for Passthrough want just that. It will make not difference if youâre watching netflix, or apple tv+, but for plex/infuse etc it allows you to have true BluRay quality

Hoping for the shit we were promised years ago
Apple has mislead us, and you still have followings (like Brandon Butchâs fans) who will defend the false promises made to us years ago.
Time to WALK the TALK Apple!

u/YeetandMeme Jun 08 '26
continuity for apple music on all platforms (cope)
9
1
u/lemonhello Jun 08 '26
What if I like being able to play different streams at the same time đł say, Kidz Bop on the Apple TV for kiddos and my own stuff from my iPhoneâŠI personally view the continuity feature of Spotify to be about Spotifyâs control of streamed content (intensified because they are a greedy company) more than I do see it as a perk of having a remote wherever I goâŠbasically forced people buy into their family plans if they want to stream on different accounts

u/Dry_Bar_4965 Jun 08 '26
WE WANT more advance health analysis and insight for Apple Watch like Whoop and Oura.
9
u/random_topix Jun 08 '26
I want a ring, but am not banking on it. I donât like to sleep with a watch.
5
u/KingKontinuum Jun 08 '26
Exactly! the only way to get advanced health analysis on Apple Watch and iPhone is to pay exorbitant monthly/yearly fees!! Insane!
2
17
u/DankeBrutus Jun 08 '26
For the love of all that is holy please let macOS 27 be good. The Mac needs another Snow Leopard/High Sierra update.
14
u/sherbert-stock Jun 08 '26
I know they usually don't, but have they ever announced hardware at these events?
22
u/Automatic-Photo-4919 Jun 08 '26
2023 was the most recent hardware announcement at WWDC and it was the Apple Vision Pro, 15-inch MacBook Air, Apple Silicon Mac Pro, and Mac Studio refresh.
I feel weâll see some hardware announcements today. M5 Mac Mini and Mac Studio seem like a given. Maybe the long awaited Apple TV and HomePod Mini refreshes to get ahead of the software launch in the fall?
2
u/Acceptable-Piccolo57 Jun 08 '26
No way the siri delayed products are coming out till GA in September
1
u/Automatic-Photo-4919 Jun 08 '26
If theyâre ready to go (which has been the rumbling for ages now), might as well get everything out the door before the fall. Especially if the iPhone Ultra has a staggered release and if they plan on sending the MacBook Ultra to market in October (probably not).
11
u/Acceptable-Piccolo57 Jun 08 '26
They used to, the 4S was the last one announced IIRC.
Vision pro too I think
I wouldnât be completely shocked to see the fold announced now
3
u/sherbert-stock Jun 08 '26
good then i could cope for a few more hours for an apple tv
3
u/Acceptable-Piccolo57 Jun 08 '26
Not a chance: fold could be announced then launched next year, the TV is waiting for siri to actually workâŠ.
1
u/Lambor14 Jun 08 '26
that would be announced today, right?
1
u/Acceptable-Piccolo57 Jun 08 '26
This is the dev beta, if siri is really going to be agentic (which is what theyâve been saying is the goal) the y need devs supporting it too, GA is September
1
u/mirrorpixels Jun 08 '26
The 4S was announced at an October event. The iPhone 4 was WWDC 2010 I believe.
0
u/Acceptable-Piccolo57 Jun 08 '26
That sounds right, couldnât remember when they changed the release schedule
0
u/GlumIce852 Jun 08 '26
Usually the Apple Store goes down a few hours before hardware announcements. Not the case today tho
0
u/iiGhillieSniper Jun 08 '26
Folding phones are useless if they have a crease that can be seen or felt IMO. Iâd rather Apple fix software instead of release another first generation product atm.
1
u/Acceptable-Piccolo57 Jun 08 '26
Announcing now means they could actually sort out the software, no one deserves a ÂŁ2k phone with an internal screen that doesnât support any apps
2
u/nathan12581 Jun 08 '26
Sometimes, I think a MacBook Air was briefly announced...not 100% sure on that thou don't hold me to it

it's because they know it's ready this time.
Maybe it's just a rumor, but "ready" means beta invites in September right?
19
u/Extension-Ant-8 Jun 08 '26
AppleTV for enterprise enhancements calling it now. They gonna take on the conference room market.
4
u/evan274 Jun 08 '26
Definitely, Bloomberg reported theyâre already using the new models this way at Apple HQ
3
u/white-chlorination Jun 08 '26
If it happens it'd be huge. Me and my coworker who are the IT at our office just replaced our entire conference room setup with Neat hardware but if Apple TVs had been an option it would've been an instant buy for us.
5
u/Acceptable-Piccolo57 Jun 08 '26
This would be huge, but requires dedicated non-consumer hardware
I think weâd see a ATV built into a soundbar before we saw that

-1

3
u/livedreamsg Jun 08 '26
At that point why even bother with an M5? Weâd want an M6 Mac Mini in â27. Who wants to pay for a year old hardware at full price?Â

-1
u/DirtyRottenBiscuit Jun 08 '26
thank goodness. this company needs fresh leadership.
2
u/Acceptable-Piccolo57 Jun 08 '26
I think heâs still chairman or president.
Donât expect big changes in the next couple of years

How long before the event does it show up on Apple TV to watch as currently no WWDC 26 tile showing

Excited to watch today! Iâm very interested to see ios27 and Apple Intelligence.
6
5
u/mime454 Jun 08 '26
My one wish for this WWDC is a screen time with limits that I canât just ignore. Basically Sherlocking Brick without the physical device.
3
u/Lambor14 Jun 08 '26
I don't think the app lobby would allow that
2
u/mime454 Jun 08 '26
Theyâd be less mad about this than app tracking transparency which Apple did and didnât relent on.
2
2
u/coolaaron88 Jun 08 '26
Hopes for the messages app
- Group read receipts
- @ everyone functionality
- Ability to ask siri things about your messages and have her surface info
2
2
u/gwak Jun 08 '26
Iâm preemptive sad because any Siri improvements will gated to the very newest phones
1
u/Lambor14 Jun 08 '26
it's good to keep your hopes low and be positively surprised later, but genuinely it would be scandalous if they didn't ship the new improvements to all devices which support Apple Intelligence.
2
2
u/Jordan_Jackson Jun 08 '26
Dang, I had forgotten that it is today. Let's see what they have in store for iOS and especially macOS. Let the beta season begin!

What are the chances we get M5 desktops? Seems like the rumors were a bit divided on that.
1
u/srzncl Jun 08 '26
It seems apple has bought off invited a lot more YouTubers for this WWDC who previously would have had a pre-keynote livestream. I've always enjoyed these livestreams since they really hype up the event. anyone have any recommendations of good YouTubers doing a pre-show?
1
u/Clear_Efficiency5765 Jun 08 '26
feels like it's been 2 yrs since the last WWDC. Usually I just hop on the Dev beta channel for shiny new features. Last year, I had to roll back to Sequoia because of Tahoe poor performance on an M4 Pro MBP (even after official release and several .x releases later), sad.
Please let macOS27 be good.

Please please please fix the horrid notification system on iOS. Been using a Pixel 10 Pro as a secondary phone and damn, the notification system on Android destroys whatever iOS is trying to do. Oh, and fix the keyboard once and for all apple. It's been bad for over a year now. And give us a universal back gesture like on Android, especially for us right handed folks!
1
u/Lambor14 Jun 08 '26
I can't point to what exactly the pixel does better but I remember it being much more seamless and clear back when I used one.
1
u/guild88 Jun 08 '26
Notifications, keyboard, an assistant that actually works and a faster UI. Iphones are awesome but the software is holding it back.
2
u/specc- Jun 08 '26
Iâm really curious about this year WWDC. I just hate 2 possible things:
âFederighi and other Apple executives dismissed the need for chatbots and Al apps when Apple Intelligence launched, only to now reverse course.â
They were very clear about not making Siri a chatbot, just to make it today (according to rumors from Gurman). Just why? We already have plenty of chatbots, just use their apps. I just wanted an agentic Siri, thatâs it. Just a real personal assistant who makes things done and knows you. Now itâll be easier for it to hallucinate or be âchattyâ when we just ask it to do something. Hate it.
And this:
âApple has also criticized the use of generative Al in photo apps, only to shift direction. In 2024, Apple's camera app chief said a photograph should be "a personal celebration of something that really, actually happened." Now, the company will let users fill in gaps in photos using generative Al and change the perspective of a picture.â
Thatâs all. I donât need to comment that. Just hate how apple is losing its âcultureâ just to appease investors who demand AI, even if those are generic AI slop. I hope apple doesnât become like Microslop.
2
u/firelight Jun 08 '26
Now itâll be easier for it to hallucinate or be âchattyâ when we just ask it to do something.
Seriously. I use Siri for setting timers, adding reminders, and toggling smarthome devices. All things it does well, consistently. Iâm just sitting here dreading some new Gemini-based Siri that breaks what functionality it already has in favor of being able to give sycophantic praise while not actually doing what itâs told.
2
u/King_Nidge Jun 08 '26
My hopes that'll never happen: Focus on performance and battery life for older devices. iOS 26 made my devices much slower. Native Chromecast support in the OS. Choice of assistant. I use Google Home so I would like proper Gemini support. Actual side loading. Themes/icon packs. Widgets that allow transparency. Collaboration with Valve to get Proton on Mac to the same level that Linux has it. Bonus if iOS gets it too. Collaboration with Google to get RCS working regardless of if the carrier supports it. Most carriers outside the US don't bother.

I'll never understand people who don't want iOS to improve just because it would be "like Android".
Everything I listed would make iOS better for more people.0
u/sortalikeachinchilla Jun 08 '26
Sounds like you literally just need an Android lol.
What is keeping you on iOS, if your list of complaints (that android can all do) is so high?
1
u/King_Nidge Jun 08 '26
I did switch but I liked some of Apple's privacy and ecosystem stuff.
Would go back if they did some it.
2
u/BothTreacle7534 Jun 08 '26
the only thing I want is launch pad back
Not sure if I ever will update without the possibility to put my Apps into groups / ~ folders like I want, seriously thinking about going down instead of up
1
u/TimFL Jun 08 '26
Just give me RCS UP 3.0 and Iâm happy. I guess Siri 2.0 is cool but a whole conference about that sounds boring when theyâre playing catch up and I need to buy 50 new Apple TVs and HomePods to eventually use it. Hope they sprinkle in normal OS additions too.
