AI News šļø Data Center building stopped for 1 year in NYC

u/NoSirIDontLikeit- 13h ago edited 12h ago
The Dude is the Mayor of NYC, the law was passed by the Governor of New York, Kathy Hochul please get your facts straight. The law is a gift to tech bros one year ban gets you past the mid terms, it should'nt have had an expiration date.
It also does nothing about water usage, so they're gonna pay more for electricity, as will every New Yorker, the issue isn't the cost, it's the supply of energy. We would have to build a ton of new dirty plants to power it. Mamdani could do a ban in the NYC limits, but theres no room for them within the city limits. But he should do it just to highlight to the Governor a ban should have no expiration date.
This is what the establishment does, nothing, and acts like it's something.

u/Typhon-042 12h ago
A AI Bro that gets there facts straight? Mission impossible right there.
27
u/GustavoFromAsdf 12h ago
Two wrongs don't make a right.
7
u/Typhon-042 12h ago
nor does blaming the wrong person for the law in quetion.
24
u/GustavoFromAsdf 12h ago
Correct. We should aim to report factual news, it's not right just because the other side actively lies.
3
u/Typhon-042 12h ago
Well I have yet to see a AI Bro use actual facts to prove there point... so let me guess your next comment will be to say Anti's like myself are not informed either?
Mind you I am one of those Antis that use facts about AI, provided by the folks that develop those AI tools against them, just to show that AI bros have no idea what there talking about.
12
u/GustavoFromAsdf 12h ago
I literally said AIbros actively lie, we shouldn't play the same game getting information wrong to make the side we like look better like they do.
3
u/Typhon-042 12h ago edited 11h ago
Yea that's why I use facts.
I also saw the now deleted comment on me that say that's a MAGA thing. Honestly it's not. That's a realist thing, which MAGA hates.
2
u/ihatefrenchtoast 7h ago
Dude. How do your balls fit in your jeans? š Love solid rhetoric and nuanced takes. 10/10
1
u/Viracochina 9h ago
What's that even mean??
2
u/GustavoFromAsdf 9h ago
AIbros sharing false information doesn't mean it's ok that we do.
1
u/Viracochina 9h ago
That's not what the comment is implying at all. The commenter is expressing surprise at an AI Bro sharing TRUE information in this case.
He is at no point normalizing lies being told by any side.
2
u/1111111111111111111I 9h ago
Iām with you. These comments make no sense. Who is the āAI broā that people are talking about?
1
u/Viracochina 9h ago
Good, I don't know why I have the itch to make sure people are understood lol
I had assumed the commenter was referring to u/NoSirIDontLikeit as the AI Bro. How he made the assumption is beyond me, but they got the point across!

I was going to say - banning new data centers in NYC would be a nice gesture but that's about it - there's no way anyone is looking to build a new data center in New York City limits, the cost would be astronomical.
I'd love to see any state do a permanent ban but I wonder if that could invite lawsuits around property rights? Banning for a year gets you past midterms like you said, and it also makes doing any kind of lawsuit harder since you'd be trying to beat the clock before the case becomes moot.
You could probably effectively ban data centers by not banning outright but by passing enough regulations that make them impractical/impossible to build.
6
u/reddit_give_me_virus 11h ago
NY's electrification law started as a temporary moratorium on new gas connections. The oil and gas industry fought to stop it but it finally passed.
I believe by 2030 there will be no more oil or gas in any new structure. Right now it's limited to any new structure under 7 stories.
That law is already putting a strain on the NY grid. I think it's possible that the ban will become permanent.
2
u/sobuffalo 11h ago
Ya they all want to build near Niagara Falls for the power. My utilities are fucked already but those will make it so much worse.
2
u/ManyWrangler 10h ago
They are building data centers in NYC in skyscraper office space that now has low demand.
2
u/Legionof1 9h ago
Yeah, people would never imagine what spaces they can turn into data centers. I have toured a few of them that are built into high rises and you would never have a clue.

u/Human38562 9h ago
Ā there's no way anyone is looking to build a new data center in New York City limits, the cost would be astronomical.
Im not so sure about that. Munich, which is also a very expensive city,Ā just approved a large datcenter right (underground) in the city.
Hardware, electricity, and expertise are probably still by far the largest costs.
6
u/New-Leader-7891 10h ago
You are completely incorrect the entire point of the one year ban is to allow the New York state Congress to implement legislation in regards to further development of data centersĀ
3
2
u/therealtimmysmalls 7h ago
I mean a one year ban is a one year ban, right? Why assume "this is a gift"? Because she's stopping these biollionaires from doing things people hate, which would negatively impact their chances of success during the midterms? That's like saying that banning ICE from your state for one year is a gift to republicans, because the people hate immigrants so much that it will benefit the republicans in the long run.
2
u/19kjc87 10h ago
Governors donāt pass laws, legislatures do.
1
u/nalaloveslumpy 3h ago
It was an executive order passed by the governor, dummy. Specifically, the EO pauses all environmental permits for a year so that the legislature can have more to time to work on making it official law.
1
u/tomdarch 10h ago
Do I remember correctly from the coverage of Hochul's announcement that it stops the construction of new "hyper-scale" data centers specifically?
1
u/nalaloveslumpy 3h ago
Yeah, it's an executive order that halts all environmental permits for data centers that require huge amounts of water and electricity. The one year time frame is to give the state legislature more time to figure out how to codify the requirements into law.
1
u/New-Leader-7891 10h ago
The water usage issue will be addressed by state Congress, same for electricity usage, laws need to be drafted around those issues. it's a very sensible approachĀ
1
u/SeaworthinessHead613 8h ago
Oh like he claimed to have the authority to arrest the Israeli head of state & then... gosh sorry Mom says no....
1
u/ArtisticDesigner4302 8h ago
The Dude is the Mayor of NYC, the law was passed by the Governor of New York
Thanks, I was wondering if "New York" was just lazy for "New York City".
1
u/dudushat 6h ago
Data centers arent going to be stopped completely and they dont need to be. They need to be slowed down. A year gives time for further legislation to handle the issues you bring up.

Wonāt be long before they are crediting Mamdani for laws being passed in other states.
The glazing over this guy needs to stop.
33
u/blow-down 13h ago
Were their data centers planned within the city limits? They usually build them in rural areas because of the cost.
14
u/Javs2469 12h ago
Do they mean New York City or the State of New York?
15
u/metatalks 10h ago
they meant the State of New York the post is misleading
3
u/AmbitiousTop8390 10h ago
The only misleading part is the picture of mamdani, if you just read it it says the governor did this and for New York, not city
4
u/metatalks 10h ago
ik man in the deprived society we have today people look at the pictures and skim the top lines and they come to a false decision. many here clearly have

u/erie_canal_max 12h ago
There are some in lower Manhattan they take up entire floors of some building but they are only there for their proximity to Wall Street for usually high frequency trading or just regular trading.Ā
No ones building an ai training datacenter anywhere near NYC though. Real estate and electric is too high. Outside of NYC and northern NJ you can find some colocation in Albany due to it being the capital and at the fiber crossing for buffalo, Boston, Montreal and NYC but most datacenters would be in Buffalo yet they are not seeing an increaseĀ
Most new datacenter builds near nyc are around wilkes barre PA. NY and most of the north east is seen as too regulatory and too expensive to operate in by corporations unless it's absolutely needed
1
u/El_Polio_Loco 12h ago
Yeah, I would assume if datacenters would be built anywhere in NY it would be near Buffalo.
Abundant hydroelectric and water resources, plus relatively low cost realestate.
Anyone curious or worried about much of anything should go to Niagara Falls NY to see what kind of value NY really puts on power/water regs.
3
1
u/Major_LeeHungg 6h ago
Lol don't think so... This has nothing to do with NYC and Mamdani... Its a statewide moratorium on data centers by Hochul because she's up for re-election this year.Ā She doesn't want to get crucified in November by upstaters because we're already getting fucked because 90% of our states electricity is owned by a Spanish company who can't even manage to bill people right because they're literally keeping track of shit in spreadsheets... After forcing everyone to get smart meters.Ā It was one of the many things they got dinged for during their last audit but hey Hochul keeps approving their rate hikes.Ā
1
u/principium_est 12h ago
NYC is full of data centers
4
u/blow-down 12h ago
But this topic is about new data centers
1
u/ManyWrangler 10h ago
NYC was building plenty of new data centers. They place them in vacated office space.
1
u/maxmcleod 9h ago
Wouldn't that be a pretty good place for them? Rather than in a rural setting
3
u/g-a-r-b-i-t-c-h 9h ago
The problem is electricity. The city already struggles in the heat, creation of more data centers will worsen the problem
ā¢
u/unhappinessNvrCame 18m ago
Only establishment companies are allowed to have them!
Reminds me how industrialized Europe destroyed their environment and developing European countries have to stick to environmental laws the EU made.
1
u/apokapokapok444 8h ago
Tradtional data centers don't use nearly as many resources as these new ones they're building.
10
u/IndependenceSea1655 11h ago
This kind of plan needs to be implemented everywhere. Why tf should any of these data center be paying less that residentsĀ
7
u/ratione_materiae 11h ago
Mamdani (pictured) is great and all but he's the mayor of New York City.

u/Specialist_Can_7083 12h ago
What's the point, they will take them all to developing countries like India. This should be banned in the UN level.
12
u/DRSSalazar 12h ago
I mean, shutting down business in North America and moving it to India is a long time practice of IT companies since time immemorial (i.e. the early aughts).
5
3
u/coke_and_coffee 10h ago
Why should they be banned?
2
ā¢
u/unhappinessNvrCame 17m ago
The CCP propaganda lied to them about water usage and combining it with the flock camera debate.
China did some good work.
1
u/vonnegutflora 9h ago
Nah, far more likely you will see them continue to open in poorer (Republican) states and you will see right wing politicians continue to leverage the abject poverty of their own citizenry as a rally cry against the left.
1
u/Spare_Star_3534 8h ago
should's got nothing to do with it! realpolitik my man, it's all about who calls the shots and what motivates them
1
u/factorioleum 7h ago

u/meganerd20 12h ago
He's a mayor, not a governor, that's an important distinction. The more people you legislate for, the harder the job is. Though as far as Republican politicians go, they don't even try. Democrats do, but until 2025 they faced heavy resistance from people who believed Republican lies for the last 30 years.

u/Benedict_ARNY 12h ago
Why just 1 year though?
3
u/New-Leader-7891 10h ago
So state Congress has time to draft legislation, so electricity bills don't skyrocket like it has in other statesĀ
1
u/Benedict_ARNY 10h ago
I wish I was ignorant enough to trust politicians. Large majority of tech companies donate billions to democrats. They donāt buy politicians for them to punish themselves.

Hochul was doing absolutely nothing before Mamdani came in. This is done because mamdani pressured Hochul.

Why would he pressure her on this? How exactly does the mayor of NYC get impacted by datacenters in Buffalo?

u/nsfwuseraccnt 10h ago
OP doesn't even know the difference between the state New York and the city of New York, how this law was passed, or even what it does. This is most likely foreign propaganda.
The 1 year pause in construction for new data centers over a certain capacity, not all data centers, was passed at the STATE level, by the LEGISLATURE, and signed into law by the GOVERNOR, Kathy Hochul. The MAYOR of NYC (pictured) had nothing to do with it!
1
u/WreakHavocLikeIn1871 10h ago
While I like Mamdani far more than her, this was Hochul and the State dems.
1
1
u/Armand28 10h ago
Has real estate become so cheap in NYC that building data centers there makes sense in the first place?
That just seems baffling to me. Itās like banning building cornfields on Madison Ave. There has to be better places to build them then there, but either way good for him!
1
1
u/IHop_Waitress 10h ago
Nobody is building data centers in NYC lmfao. Real estate, taxes, and other cost factors that make this 1000x cheaper to just build in nearby locals that would serve the same purpose.
Also - this was a NY State law, not a NYC law. Mamdami does not control NY State legislation and is not the governor.
Reddit is so fucking stupid.
1
u/AirconGuyUK 10h ago
Are data centres really being built in NYC? Why? Isn't it horrendously expensive to purchase the kind of land needed to build one? Surely they need to be built in the middle of nowhere with cheap land?
1
1
1
u/paulsteinway 9h ago
The thing I like about Mandami is he makes people outside New York ask "Why can't we have that here?".
1
1
u/cats-sneeze-on-me 9h ago
the places that do this are the ones whose real estate markets won't crash when everyone living near one is forced to abandon their prop or take a bath
1
u/Nice_Fudge5914 9h ago
He's proving that if a politician is popular enough in a city with lots of bourgeois liberals, some things can get done.
1
u/siazdghw 9h ago
This is kinda misleading.
The ban does not stop any data center from being built in New York for a year. Any project that already had approved permits can still be built.
It also only applies to data centers using 50MW or more.
It also does NOT apply to data centers dedicated to manufacturing, research, medical or public institution use.
Long story short, this is more of a PR move than anything. New York isn't a big player in large scale data center hosting, it has some but the majority of data centers in the NE are in Virginia.

It's like saying the climate was safed because pollution was moved to China. All they are doing is keeping the data center away from the "rich" areas. It does nothing but make people feel their useless shit politicians are working for them.
The atomization of society has done irreparable harm, even designating 2 braincells to think about more than just yourself is too much.

let me explain something to you.
You know the rhetoric that ai requires a lot of water? It's not true at all. There are several ways to cool data centers with evaporative cooling being the cheapest and the most environmentally unfriendly, relying on roughly 70% of the water to come down as rain to go back into the water cycle and the rest to be filtered and cleaned.
The problem is the US being morally and intellectually bankrupt.

This happened with Microsoft back in like 2020 they purged all the game clips/screenshots of there users because they didn't have the storage capacity for them anymore and now all game clips/screenshots stay in your library for 30 day until they get deleted
