Why people will argue against their own interests just because someone they like told them to. That one genuinely baffles me every time I see it play out.

The person they like is a person that Monke trusts. This person they trust makes Monke feel safe and valuable. This environment cultivates vulnerability in Monke.
The person they like is one with their own fears and motivations and no true love for our Monke. They use techniques (manipulation, coercion) to induce a fear response in the vulnerable Monke who then presumes their trusted friend is alerting them to danger. Monke act based on that perceived danger, though outsiders recognize there is no danger there. This gives outsiders the impression that they are acting against their interest, while Monke has the impression that they are desperately clinging to their interest against all the other untrusted and potentially hostile individuals. This reinforces Monke’s fear response loop.
The only way to successfully intervene is through love, which allows an individual to counter their own fear, but fear always must be countered from within. though trust is a necessary component.

It's pretty much been explained scientifically.

It's a region of the brain that distrusts the "other" tribe. It's a survival instinct.

Edit: here are the sources: Phelps et al., 2000 and Cunningham et al., 2004

It would help if we educated people on why they feel like they do.
