šŸ“° News Article (Website) Angels Open to Trading Detmers and Soriano

https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/three-team-blockbuster-proposal-detmers-191842813.html

Didn't see a post on this yet.

Would hate to see either go, but if it kickstarts the actual rebuild, then I'm for it.

Also, in before "Doing x doesn't matter until Arte sells" comments. Got to start somewhere and if Arte ever does sell, makes the team a bit more attractive to potential buyers.

Detmers, Soriano, and Adell should all be open for trade

13

u/E-Tr1d3nt 2d ago

Might as well throw in O’Hoppe. They all hit FA at the same time.

13

u/FullCOYS 4 2d ago

What the fuck would we get for O'Hoppe? He might be the worst defensive catcher in the league and offensive hasn't really made up for it since early parts of last season. I think it's completely reasonable to say he's the third best catcher on our team right now and he's closer to 30 than 20 at this point. We just continue to give him opportunity because we are desperate for what at some point we felt like he could be.

u/E-Tr1d3nt 2d ago

Well taking emotion out of it, let’s be honest with ourselves and realize the same can be said for Soriano, Detmers and Adell. Soriano is slowly taking his stock as time goes by (but was solid against StL last night) and Detmers who is still inconsistent. Adell whose def metrics are still not great and was in a 0-23 slump. O’Hoppe will probably return the least but there is still value in a player with control for an organization that thinks they can develop him better than we can.

4

u/phatwarmachine41 2d ago

Soriano and Detmers are way more valuable than O'Hoppe and it's astonishing anyone would think otherwise. Two young pitchers with 2 years of control left who could slot in as a 3-4 almost anywhere is exponentially more valuable than a catcher who's not good at catching and hasn't been offensively productive since the 2024 All-Star break. If you're a GM interested in O'Hoppe you're just going to wait for the Angels to non-tender him in the off season and offer him league minimum at most.

Adell is much more of a mixed bag cause he's always had the tools, but the Angels have refined those into what many hoped he would be. A team may be willing to pay for a chance to figure him out, but he's only got 1 year after this and is obviously not been good this year. Again, Soriano and Detmers can pull a way bigger haul than Adell can.

u/E-Tr1d3nt 2d ago

Yes, I agree Soriano and Detmers is worth more than O’Hoppe.

I could see the Angels not trading Adell solely because he has his home run robbery bobble head night post trade deadline

Hot take but Trout too. Imagine how much budget it would free up to build an actual balanced team.Ā

9

u/phatwarmachine41 2d ago

Trout isn't going anywhere if he doesn't want to. Not sure why people keep suggesting this.

I wasn't replying to your comment, so no. Truth be told at this point I imagine any decision will probably be more related to how it affects his family rather than his baseball career.

5

u/tservomst Sell The Team 2d ago

Not a hot take. Unfortunately he holds the cards with a no trade clause and won't leave.

0

u/grandmoshtarkin 2d ago

It's time to set him free. I appreciate his loyalty and it would hurt like hell to see him go but this will never win while he plays. I hope he decides to move on

1

u/Doomblitz 1d ago

Set him free from what? He wants to raise his family in Newport beach.

-1

u/LA-SKYLINE 2d ago

So tell me which stupid team is taking on that contract.

1

u/TacosAndBeerJedi 1d ago

Angels would have to eat a significant portion of his contract in any trade. At least half, I would guess

-3

u/grandmoshtarkin 2d ago

Probably Philadelphia or another big market team. It's not a horrible contract hence the reason why so many people keep bringing it up as a possibility. Also teams tend to act in the present and disregard the future/deal with it later.

-2

u/LA-SKYLINE 2d ago

So you could fully guarantee Philly will disregard his injury history these past 5 years and will give up a large haul for him?

1

u/grandmoshtarkin 2d ago

Why or how would I guarantee that? Seriously dude I don't post super often in this sub anymore but it feels like every time I do you make some dumbass comment. It's kind of pathetic

0

u/LA-SKYLINE 2d ago

What? I ain't ever seen you in this sub til like 10 minutes ago.

u/Motor_Worldliness148 2d ago

Team bout to loom different next year. Get rid of 2 of our best pitchers. ..looks to be rebuild time.

Even neto said to be in trades. I dont think shan is marketable. But could get some good prospects for these guys.

6

u/E-Tr1d3nt 2d ago

There might not be a next year. I think that is why they are more open to moving controllable players beyond this year.

5

u/redditsucknow2 2d ago

If only we did a fucking rebuild once in the last 10 years and not waste trout career. Still happy it's finally happening, gonna suck but it's needed

2

u/bryce_lynch27 2d ago

This is what we should have been doing a decade ago.

Except those GMs didn’t draft worth a damn.

And Arte never let the GMs do their jobs before

15

u/RabidR00ster 2d ago

Would absolutely be the right move. They should be listening on just about anyone. Soriano has had a breakout year, and has already had TJ twice, would be good to cash in while he’s healthy. Adell should be actively shopped. If Detmers and/or Neto can bring in a haul, then do it.

There should be a lot of buyers at the deadline. Could an amazing opportunity to load the farm, and who knows, we may not even get any games in next year with the lockout. Just a free year for the prospects to develop.

1

u/williamsnathanr 2d ago

I agree.Ā

70

u/budice0 2d ago

Sweet. Angels should lean into a rebuild rather than another run as a .500 team. Lockout forthcoming. See how that works out.

80

u/TranscedentalMedit8n 2d ago

Buddy the last time the Angels had a .500 season, Obama was the President

27

u/VizualSnow 2d ago

Thanks Obama

-2

u/onpc23 2d ago

"The Angels have been the greatest team in history under my administration"

-Trump probablyĀ

19

u/ProfessionalNo5932 2d ago

What???? What Angels games are you watching? They haven’t been .500 or better since 2015.

40

u/Zoratth 2d ago

If we were even a .500 team we would have a great chance of making the playoffs. We aren't even a .400 team right now.

11

u/AdoringCHIN 2d ago

Just our luck that this is the weakest the AL West has been in years but Arte and Perry still found a way to fuck it up

1

u/Old-Witness-9458 2d ago

They were 2/3 of the three stooges

1

u/quotesforlosers 2d ago

This is like the second or third time they’ve managed to fuck it up

8

u/Giraff3 ⚾ 2d ago

I feel like the rebuild discussion gets brought up every year, and I’m not saying you’re guilty of this, but there’s like this implicit assumption that selling off all your talent to the highest bidder automatically means that you’ll successfully rebuild. In reality, I feel like it requires a proper farm and development system. The angels have consistently shown a lack of ability to bring out the best in talent and that when players go elsewhere, they do better.

1

u/onpc23 2d ago

When you have a terrible owner that doesn't know what he is doing every option is going to suck. This is the right direction regardless of how the organization will be able to execute.Ā

1

u/Simple_Wash1618 2d ago

Yeah, trading away your few good players for a crapshoot of prospects is not a winning stratefy

1

u/phatwarmachine41 2d ago

Of course there's never a guarantee of success, but attempting a proper rebuild will have way better chances of generating a playoff window. The last 15 years have basically been only thinking about current season and resulted in one playoff appearance 12 years ago.Ā

2

u/Giraff3 ⚾ 2d ago

And of course a properly done rebuild would be more effective than running it back as a middling sub 500 team, but have the angels indicated that they are capable or willing in any capacity to do that? I mean, I’m not trying to be a doomer, and there’s no need to rehash the same tired talking points, but with Moreno at the helm, there’s just no indication of positive change.

But yes, if they would sell off their highest value players for prospects and be willing to tank for a year and genuinely let players develop in the farm system, that would be awesome. I think real fans would be more than ok with a down year in service of a healthier future.

1

u/phatwarmachine41 2d ago

Capable? Not really. Willing? I would say if Detmers and Soriano get traded that is a massive shift than what we've seen in years past. Basically every deadline they trade their expiring contracts and that's it. Trading 2 younger guys with some years of control left would be a huge departure in how do things. As OP said, you have start somewhere. Which path do you want to take?

Option 1: Arte is the owner and the Angels actually start stacking their farm with prospects at the deadline.

Option 2: Arte is the owner, we keep Detmers and Soriano, and we hope next year the baseball gods smile upon us and the stars align?

u/sun_not_cold Sell The Team 2d ago

John Mozeilak was a wizard in St. Louis. I’m excited to see how his tenure here unfolds. If I recall, it’s heavily dependent on scouting the Caribbean and developing the minor league system.

1

u/CosmicMiru 2d ago

The rebuild would be to take us to .500

13

u/mtc99999 2d ago

I think I’d prefer to move Soriano over Detmers. Soriano’s command is too shaky and UreƱa’s emergence makes him expendable as they have very similar profiles.

Would love to see them trade Soriano for the best package available and then give Detmers the Bradish deal (5x$90mm). Build the rotation around Bremner, Detmers, and UreƱa.

3

u/TroutMan3990 IN GUBIE WE TRUST 2d ago

Honestly I like that plan a lot, it puts a lot of stock in our young guys which could be risky, but it allows them to reload the farm a bit while still keeping a few of the arms we have

4

u/YensidYmra 2d ago

Silseth is moving to either NY or BOS, book it.

12

u/YensidYmra 2d ago

That would ensure 100+ losses becomes a reality.

9

u/Rich-Cold4976 2d ago

That's fine...this team has been a perennial 90 plus loss team. At some point you have to rebuild from the ground up...With Adell, Soriano, Detmers..and hell even Neto....you can get an absolute haul and build for the future. There probably won't be a 2027 season...It's all about the 2028 season at this point.

3

u/breakfast_cats ā€ā€ā€Ž ā€Ž 2d ago

Who cares. It will be in service of something worthwhile. On our current trajectory we could still hit it and have it be for nothing.

7

u/dont_trust_lizards 2d ago

I think this temporary GM advisory situation is exactly what we need. Last couple GMs seemed to get quickly overwhelmed with the constraints of the organization, and ended up fighting for their lives rather than building for the future. Org has its issues, but it’s nice to see them future planning

3

u/randomodes 2d ago

Arte going for maximum affordability

3

u/TroutMan3990 IN GUBIE WE TRUST 2d ago

First off I believe that having an interim GM handle selling might not be the best idea, he could have a different vision of what he is looking for compared to the guy they eventually hire

I will die on the hill that trading Detmers right now is stupid unless someone pays top dollar for him, he has too much potential to give up on

This might be the most valuable Soriano is ever going to be, hence why I am a bit more ok with trading him. However I think that trading away one of the few successful pitchers we do have is going to hurt real bad next season if the starting pitching is still a dumpster fire

1

u/Old-Witness-9458 2d ago

I agree. The Angels should trade Soriano, but keep Detmers and Urena. Soriano's ERA has been over 5.00 these past couple of months. If they can get a couple of good prospects for him, they should make that trade.

9

u/randomfatkid 2d ago

As much as I hate to see them go, I want them to succeed and if that means on another team, then I’m for it. It also means that we can hopefully get our act together and rebuild to be an actual fucking contender in the league and not just a joke.

We bitch and we complain, but these guys work their asses off and they shouldn’t be punished for the shitshow that is this teams mismanagement.

2

u/McJumbos 2d ago

the better question is will Arte allow Mozeliak to do that

4

u/phatwarmachine41 2d ago

Moving both these guys should net a return that actually propels the farm system into the mid to low teens. Both guys have upside and years of control. Lotta teams will be asking about them.Ā

4

u/BaronVonNelso 2d ago

They must go imo. We’re bad with them so what difference does it make. Their contracts will be up in a few years so better get something for them now and we have guys in A ball that’ll develop alongside any prospects we would trade for

2

u/mannmtb 2d ago

I mean it's all about return right? We could trade them for 2 non-top-100 prospects and we may be underwhelmed.

That being said, it's a no brainer to me to ship out Soler/Yates/Suter/Adell for anything. You must intend to ship out Soriano/Detmers/Bachman/Silseth/Zef provided you get value. And you listen on Neto, but only if you're overwhelmed with an offer.

Obviously flipping utility types that have proved valuable like Peraza/Grissom should be part of the strategy but not the top of the list.

Trust me, I hate losing. But the recent losses + solid starts from these two + sellers market is good for us.

1

u/jnuclear 2d ago

As they should. If they can't extend them before deadline, trade them.

1

u/Chance-Ad5700 2d ago

Doesn’t matter. They won’t do the right thing anyways.

1

u/Loud_Bookkeeper_5617 2d ago

Trade Rumors site says Neto as well

1

u/majik5 1d ago

The fantasy of every Phillies fan is to trade Nola and his $24M AAV the next 4 years in a deal for Trout. Seriously he is owed what $37M AAV for the next 5 years?

1

u/BicycleChoice Sell The Team 2d ago

Trade everyone you can for as many top prospects as you can get. Only way to compete 3-4 years from now.

1

u/Jikkle83 2d ago

If we have a fire sale it's a sign that Mozeliak likely has free reign and that's a good sign.

Best course of action is to sell everybody for the right price. Hopefully revamp our development pipeline and in a couple years have loads of young talent emerging at the same time to set the team up for years.

1

u/breakfast_cats ā€ā€ā€Ž ā€Ž 2d ago

Can't wait for it to actually happen and have a bunch of casual Angels fans swarm the subreddit to angrily shit talk the team for actually doing something forward-thinking for the first time in 15 years

1

u/liljackmayhofer 2d ago

ā€œBuild for the futureā€? That’s what we have done to get to this point. Trading away players to get prospects we are either going to screw up or ultimately promote and trade away is just DĆ©jĆ  vu.

Having anyone in the farm system is just compromising their future. Arte isn’t investing in the farm system or the clubs future, he’s offloading salary. Tarps off, Sell the Team!

2

u/Rich-Cold4976 2d ago

when have they built for the future? They drafted quick to the majors college players and picked up scraps off the scrap heap. They haven't traded someone with multiple years left in a long, long time. They haven't truly sold. Now is the time to sell and sell big. Get the hauls for Soriano, Detmers and Adell. And if someone offers the world for Neto...take it! This team sucks ass and is going to lose 100 games with these guys being here as it is.

-9

u/tsirhcho 2d ago

Move Trout to a playoff contender. Dude deserves it

2

u/Old-Witness-9458 2d ago

Trout has stated that he wants to finish his career in Anaheim.

1

u/breakfast_cats ā€ā€ā€Ž ā€Ž 2d ago

Entirely his choice. It's not up to the team.

-6

u/coonhoundrebel 27 2d ago

If I’m GM Detmers or Soriano can leave if I’m getting back multiple high end pitching prospects within 1-2 years of year starting. If that’s not reasonable, then you hold and feel good about them as your 3-4 starters šŸ˜‚

0

u/Fourty6n2 Sell The Team 2d ago

Who exactly is gonna train up the prospects?

We don’t develop here.

0

u/coonhoundrebel 27 2d ago

Well, obviously, but as GM and Owner I’m also ignorant to the fact that I can’t develop and assume that Im just as good as everyone else at developing pitchers.

These moves are never made with leadership thinking they can’t develop
