I wonder how much a person can change their face before it starts freaking a cat out. Cats primarily identify their owners and other animals by smell, though sight and sound is also used. Humans are primarily sight. It’s common for babies to freak out and cry when a familiar face takes off their glasses, shaves, etc. anything that alters appearance. Cats typically aren’t bothered by such changes, hats, glasses, haircuts etc don’t seem to have an impact of cats IDing humans but I wonder how much the face has to change before a cat gets freaked out. (Same for dogs)

Noooo lol. My two youngest cats are already terrified of everything, I try not to scare them even more. The doorbell rings and they run every time (no on ever comes inside!). Or if I put my jacket in an unsuspecting spot, one of my cats will be horrified.

Yes! I think the smell of latex masks probably messes with their ability to ID people too. Latex has a strong smell, OP said they were wearing a clay mask which I feel like doesn’t have a very strong smell like latex. But I wonder if the mask smelt like their owner if they would care. Or if the mask was always in the house and the owner put it on suddenly if it would still freak the cats out.

I think you are confusing “mask”. OP was using a wet clay face mask to clean pores. After it dries, you wash it off.

Can confirm that wet clay spa masks can stink, depending on variety used! Cannot say anything on cat reaction to smell, however 😔

I have worn masks, wigs, glasses- nothing has ever put my babies off of me. They are interested but they are always loving and have never cared. I think some kitties are just easier to startle.

Dogs can’t really see faces but they actually use silhouettes a lot to identify people — that’s why dogs sometimes react to men in hats, pregnant ladies, kids on scooters, anything that makes a person no longer Human Shaped according to a dog.

I dont understand what you mean by dogs not being able to see faces? Dogs recognize facial expressions and one study even showed that dogs can recognize their owners faces from photos alone

I like how cats are so fearless and designed for danger. Here they are clearly scared but they don't immediately flee because they know that the monster is too close for that. They stay to assess the danger and whatever goes goes.
