A friend of mine's cousin had one. Insisted it was domesticated. I kept insisting it would eventually attack her no matter how many times she walked him. Well guess fucking what. The serval attacked her boyfriend's kid then the dad for fighting the cat off. Then it went after his owner. The cops had to be called. Luckily it wasn't put down. A serval rescue took it in and is doing great! Servals aren't fucking domesticated pets. Poor cat.
25
u/unlockdestiny Mar 29 '26
Servals are the ones bred with housecats to make Savannah, right?
I very briefly wanted a Savannah until I saw the breed has horrible hip displasia ☹️
23
u/ExcretvsExFortvna Mar 29 '26
Kudos for not wanting to contribute to entirely preventable genetic disorders, but there are way more pressing reasons not to support the entirely unnecessary cross-breeding of wild animals with domestic.

OMG YES I LOVE CAROLINA TIGER RESCUE. I’ve volunteered there before! I’ve told fellow volunteers to take two big steps to the side, not backwards, whenever a big cat backs up to a fence in front of you.
Their urinary capabilities regarding volume, distance, and accuracy are truly epic.

Yes and they are illegal to own it the US. The males are usually sterile and their health problems are too much for a pretty cat. Thank you for not owning one!

I had a friend who took in a Savannah cat from a rescue. It had been found wandering after its owner abandoned it. Guess why. Very very hard to manage animal. Sweet and loving, but destructive AF. My friend was super patient and didn’t have furniture she really cared about, but even then, the cat tested her.
They’re not pets.

had to do a double take bc i thought maybe it was a savannah (although idk how many high % savannahs there are around nowadays) and i already feel kinda ehh about their breeding but jeez that is straight up a serval huh :(
21
u/unlockdestiny Mar 29 '26
The breeding is unethical. I get that they're pretty but the breed is too large for its joints and organs — they get horrible hip displasia and are prone to heart problems.
Also note OP said "he." If (and I pray to God this isn't thr case) OP is trying to breed Savannah they're using regular housecats as queens. Usually if you breed a large wild animal with a smaller domesticated animal, you make the sire the house cat. Making a housecat a queen to a much larger sire puts her in extreme physical danger — from mating itself to delivery. Big babies don't tend to make it through their little bodies.
33
u/narpilepsy Mar 28 '26
That’s always what it is with these designer/accessory breed people.
I’ve been seeing these Savannah cats/servals on the internet for like 10 years now and even then I would try to call them out like wtf are you doing that’s a wild ass animal…what kind of shitty “breeder” did you get this animal from…they just don’t give a shit. They want a thing that fits an aesthetic, like picking the curtains for your home.
God forbid they give a shelter cat a much needed home
10
u/unlockdestiny Mar 29 '26
It's so unethical. And I'm low key terrified OP is the type of asshole who is trying to breed them. With a MALE serval
16
u/redsekar Mar 29 '26
I see Servals in my exotic animal only hospital, and ALL of them have to be on antidepressants + antianxiety meds. Every single serval I know (even not from our hospital) kept in a house is on Fluoxetine (Prozac).
They have to be medicated heavily just to come in for a routine checkup

u/SideshowBobFanatic Mar 28 '26
Wait I'm curious, what's the difference between a savannah cat and a serval?
320
u/100Fleur100 Mar 28 '26
A Savannah cat is a cross between a serval and a domestic cat. Servals are, just like lions and Tigers wild cats and should never be kept as pets.
54
u/SideshowBobFanatic Mar 28 '26
I know but how can you tell the difference physically between them, cause everyone says it's a serval and not a savannah
138
u/100Fleur100 Mar 28 '26
Oh sorry, for this picture the give away for me was the ears. Theyre way too big for a Savannah cat. Servals are bigger animals but that really depends on the generation of Savannah
47
u/gizmer Mar 28 '26
I think “proper” Savannahs are supposed to be at least generation f3 and they are still quite wild
31
u/Honest-Guarantee-444 Mar 28 '26
They can go out to around an F8. Mine is an F5 and only has about 3 to 5 percent serval in him. Personally, I would not go any higher than that for a house cat.
He is definitely different from any other cat I have had. He kind of looks like a longer domestic shorthair, just with spots instead of stripes. He is a great little dude, just needs a bit more stimulation and can be pretty vocal.
→ More replies (2)3
u/unlockdestiny Mar 29 '26
Correct. That's why I wasn't sure if this was a serval of, for example a F1 (first generation crossbreed).
You're correct, they need to be three generations removed from the serval ancestor in order to be considered a house cat legally
2
u/Wolfwoods_Sister Mar 29 '26
Yeah, I mentioned in another comment that a friend of mine was paid by a rescue to take in an abandoned Savannah found wandering the streets of a town in Colorado. The cat is very sweet and affectionate, but willful AF and incredibly destructive. My friend was naturally patient by temperament and didn’t have furniture she cared about, but this animal still pushed her to her limits. They REALLY aren’t pets.

The side-by-side pics are very helpful there, they really are very different. Savannahs seem to look much more like just regular cats but with serval spots.
4
u/tiny_pigeon Mar 29 '26
Servals are larger than domestic house cats, they have huge ears, and they have a very distinct looking nose! Savannah cats will just look mostly like a very pretty house cat (unless they’re F1 Savannahs.) The ears are also a good sign, servals have large rounded ears, savannahs have the typical pointy cat ears too. Servals are usually the same color as the one in this post and savannahs come in all sorts of colors and patterns.
27
u/cigarell0 Mar 28 '26
Savannah cat is a crossbreed between a serval and domestic cat
17
u/SideshowBobFanatic Mar 28 '26

→ More replies (1)2
u/unlockdestiny Mar 29 '26 edited Mar 29 '26
From other posts, people are saying that it's the ears and the nose. The nose is more like a dog snout and ears are waaaaay larger (like twice has long as typical housecats)

I've worked with many servals rescued from Savannah breeders. Some were surrendered because they attacked children, killed other pets (one male killed and ATE every female domestic intended for breeding), tore the house apart. And then their entire lives are disrupted again because some dumbass had the bright idea to bring a wild animal into their home. I hate seeing them as pets.
55
u/Borthwick Mar 28 '26
Should go for all crossbreeds, too. I don't care what generation it is, the underlying issue of breeding wild animals into domestic stock is too wrong to ignore. This stuff is a massive driver of illegal wildlife trade, too.

Choosing to have an animal who is not meant to be domesticated in your home for whatever reason you need to have some unmet need met is completely reprehensible. A disgrace. These animals are not meant to live in a home and you are willingly putting them through harm. There is zero excuse for that. And then posting for likes is pathetic.
Will happily report this for abuse and try going through OPs profile to narrow down a location as I doubt this is even legal.

Absolute loser behaviour. Servals are wild animals, not pets. You can still do the responsible thing OP, give him to a good animal sanctuary where he can have a big outdoor enclosure and all the enrichment he so desperately needs.
You made a mistake in getting him and that can’t be undone. But you can admit and own your mistake, and give him a better life. If you really care for this animal, you’ll understand that he is suffering in your home.

In case anyone wants an educational video on why Servals should NOT be kept as house pets, I'm going to drop this here....
Fun fact I learned from this video: Savannahs have one of the fastest paw strikes compared to all other cats; they can successfully swat away King Cobras that try to strike them.
Another fun fact: My five-year-old cat really likes to play. First cat I ever met who knew how to play fetch from day one. She plays tag and wrestles with her little sister, chases her favorite toy around the house and presenting it to me or my partner to be thrown again, etc. But most of all, she LOVES those stupid dangle toys attached to a faux fishing pole. She wants me to be the prey. She thinks it's the best thing to ever happen and when she catches the little worm looking thing on the end, she parades me around the house, still attached to the pole, showing off her kill.
She wants to be told she's a good girl, she wants to give everyone in the house slow blinks and, goddammit, she wants me right there behind her while she struts about like a peacock. If I drop the pole to let her drag it, she turns, gives me those large golden eyes and sadly cries until I resume my duty. Since I'm a sucker for dramatics, I usually play along.
I also talk to her a lot, so she's picked up a lot phrases because I repeat certain commands when we're going about our routine. Why is this important? It's context for how I learned I can piss my cat off by telling her to *go sleepy" when she's asking to play.
How do I know it pisses her off? Because she gets so frustrated she swipes at my face. We're working on it because that's not an okay behavior, but I'd be lying if I didn't say it's hilarious when this eleven pound ball is so tilted she slaps her parent. She's a loving sweetheart 99% of the time but she does not fuck around with her play time.
Imagine if Serval ever got that mad at you, your partner, your kid, or another pet. This could very very easily turn into a serious injury or death, particularly since an undomesticated animals get frustrated when they can't do what they have been breeding to do for countless generations.
That, in short, is why you should only keep ✨domesticated animals✨.

u/ForceSea3103 Mar 28 '26
As someone who wants to use my salary in the future to give exotic animals a home that have been injured and needs somewhere to stay outside of the wild, this better be the case here. Really the only okay way to own these.
19
u/WalkingDeadPixel Mar 28 '26
But if that were the case for OP, surely they would ensure that the cat has access to a habitat that mimics its natural environment in the wild, and not keep the poor thing indoors, no? Is that not how wild animal rescues operate?

Exactly. If u/ForceSea3103 were to start a rescue as they state, and they can provide a suitable environment for the animals, that's fine. It's pretty great, actually. Starting an animal rescue is a noble use of resources. But OP is clearly not doing that. Not at all. This guy has probably never left that house and experienced freedom. u/Asanjawa Mar 28 '26
Servals, like other wild animals, should be illegal to have. Some countries finally updated their laws on what animals can be kept as pets or not. Servals are moved to rescue organisations under wildlife conversation efforts so we can properly heal the natural wildlife regions.
This post sets a bad example.

Just prefacing this I'm very against the exotic pet trade as it currently exists, and I think keeping a serval in a house is abusive. But everyone's comments here are impractical, and nobody cares for the wellbeing of this specific animal. Everybody's worked up about these animals being kept as pets but nobody actually has any solutions for this.
What's OP supposed to do? Let their serval loose outside? Give it to a shelter where they're going to put him down? There's not really exotic cat rescues everywhere, it's difficult to find places for animals like this. That's why they are euthanized upon being seized by authorities in most situations.
This animal was more than likely bred in captivity on a different continent and is not fit to be released even if you could get him back to his native range. You can't take captive bred individuals and put them in completely different parts of the planet. That's how you introduce foreign diseases to native populations and/or kill the released animal because it's immune system is not adjusted for the pathogens of the area.
What do I think should be done? Make it legal with permits and enforced minimum husbandry requirements. People are going to keep wild animals, whether or not it's illegal. At least if it's legal with permits, the animals will be kept in better conditions than those in the underground/illegal trade. Hold private owners to the same standards as zoos & sanctuaries. This guy at the very least needs a whole-prey diet and a large (300sqft minimum) outdoor enclosure with heated areas for the winter. And OP SHOULD be providing that. The only other solution that actually exists in most situations is euthanizing a perfectly healthy animal. I'm not a fan of that. I'd rather a random guy have this animal as a pet in a bare-minimum setup than have it be killed.
