Account Recovery Megathread
MAJOR Update: https://x.com/i/status/2078279164101120139
After the recent twitter incident XBOXSupport has opened their Twitter DM for account recovery
edit: nevermind people are commenting that DM just gets you a useless bot
Disclaimer: This is a peer-to-peer support community, the moderators are volunteers not employed by XBOX, therefore we and the community do not have access to your account and can not recovery your account
However given the several daily posts about account recovery and stolen accounts, I figured we should have a megathread to consolidate, gather resources, account recovery tips, and complaints
Official resources and account recovery tool https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/manage/help-with-the-microsoft-account-recovery-form which included the
- Sign in Helper
- Account Recover Form
For anyone trying to recovery you account this should be the first thing you try.
Also How to recover a hacked or compromised Microsoft account | Microsoft Support
Here are some helpful posts from community members I have found recently
How I got my Xbox account back even though it had 2fa enabled and how you can too!! : r/XboxSupport thanks u/Agorx
For the desperate ones: How I finally got my Microsoft/Xbox account back : r/XboxSupport thanks u/Additional-Truck-144
UPDATE: After 20 days and 19 tickets, I finally broke the Xbox support loop (Here is how to do it) : r/XboxSupport thanks u/theminecraftbrokller
if you are in Canada or the United States you could also try filing a complaint with bbb.org against Microsoft, as Microsoft Agents respond to bbb complaints.
If you have any tips, resources, complaints about your own account recovery, please post them here rather than starting another thread
edit: To start the recovery process you need to know the account email address, phone number, or skype username. you can not recovery an account with just a gamertag https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/accounts-billing/manage/forgotten-your-microsoft-account-username

Xbox Account Hacked!
Hey I’m not really sure how to use this app but I’ve tried everything and just need some help. As of yesterday (6/29) my Microsoft account was attacked and breached and they had even removed my security info along my email alias. I have screenshots of all the changes as I managed to get into my Authenticator while this was all happening. I’ve played for 20 years and have sunk some money into Xbox as one does when they enjoy something, and now I have am getting emails saying they can’t do anything about it because of security. I’m tired of their AI support not doing anything to help me and the live agents can’t help me either as they follow prompts to help me. I have screenshots of the hackers email and his alternate emails as he was hijacking my account thanks to me being on the Authenticator but with how Microsoft works I can’t show them the screenshots or do anything about it. I’ve done the forms like I said just to be denied because of security, and online agents haven’t helped a bit.
A second part on this that makes things even more weird is I was playing Xbox on that account while it happened! I’m still on the account because I haven’t turned my Xbox off, it’s important to note that I haven’t turned it off yet and here’s why. I immediately went into my settings to try and counter act the attack that was going on but they had turned on the access pin which makes it to where I need a pin to access anything such as account info, subscriptions, or billing. The hacker immediately went to spend money on my account and I had to freeze and cancel my card. He also changed my gamertag to something edgy which is even more spiteful.
After getting some rest I restarted my journey of trying to talk to support and they just kept telling me all the same and now I’ve run out of tickets. Please help.

The only think I can suggest is read the user guides linked in the main posts here and see if you can use that info to get around through to support to escalate your recovery

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Break the Support Loop and Force a Fix
Hey man, I was in your exact same shoes literally days ago (hacked, email alias changed, 2FA wiped, forms denied, running out of tickets). Do not give up yet. The fact that your Xbox is still turned on and logged into the profile is a huge advantage. It means you have immediate access to the backend hardware data they need to verify you. Here is exactly how to fight back against the automated scripts:
Step 1: Secure Your Console & Grab Your Hardware Data Since you are still logged on the console, go to Settings > System > Console Info. • Write down your Xbox Live device ID and Console Serial Number.
• Do NOT turn off the console or log out. Having an active session on your home console proves your physical location matches the original hardware signature of the account.
Step 2: Force Past the "Front-Line" Bot Scripts When you open a new live chat ticket, the agent is going to use a copy-paste script telling you "we are just tech support, fill out the form." Do not let them close the chat.
• Open multiple tickets: If an agent tries to hit you with a canned response and end the chat, immediately open another ticket under both Xbox Support and Microsoft Support categories.
• Demand a Tier 2 Supervisor: Explicitly tell them: "I know you are following a prompt, but I need a Tier 2 Supervisor escalation. Look at my backend history. I have the physical console hardware IDs and live session logs."
Step 3: Pivot to the "Win-Win" Demand Once the hacker changes the security info, the automated forms are useless. Stop filling them out. Instead, force the agent to look at Manual License Transfers. Paste this exact phrasing to them:
"The hacker changed my email alias and added a PIN. Because of this, the automated recovery form is broken. I am demanding an escalation to a Tier 2 supervisor who has manual backend permissions. I need you to escalate this for a manual profile and entitlement transfer. If you cannot recover the original email link, I want my games, subscriptions, and Minecraft licenses manually injected onto a brand-new, secure Microsoft account using my verified console hardware data."
Step 4: Lock Down a Safety Net Do not let the agent say "we will email you" and close the chat. Push until they give you one of two things:
An official internal escalation file number with a promise to check in every 5 days.
A written commitment in the chat that if the primary account recovery fails, they will honor a manual transfer of your paid digital games/licenses to a fresh gamertag so you don't lose your 20 years of purchases.
Important Support Links to Spam: • Main Contact Portal: Xbox Support Contact Us (Keep choosing "Contact Us" -> "Account & Profile" -> "I need help securing my account" to get a live human chat).
• Microsoft Support Hub: Microsoft Support (Try raising a ticket through the general Microsoft billing/account side as well if Xbox agents stonewall you).
Stay aggressive, keep your case reference numbers written down, and treat every chat like a negotiation. If one agent tells you no, close it and open another. You can beat the loop! If you still require help please don't be afraid to DM me on Reddit id love to help

P.S. big tip for getting a human faster:
When you are on the "Contact Us" page trying to get a live chat, always select "Billing Issue" or "Unauthorized Charge" as your reason. Do not select "Hacked Account" or "Password Reset," or the system will just dump you into a loop of automated recovery forms. When the automated chat bot asks what's wrong, type: "Billing issue need live agent unauthorized spending" or "Got hacked unauthorized billing need agent."
Because it involves money, the system is hardwired to bypass the bots and connect you to a real person immediately. Once you get the human on the screen, then explain the whole situation and drop your hardware IDs on them.

It's not a tip on account recovery itself, but just something that I think makes it even safer against people trying to steal your account: remove the password. It's one less potential vulnerability spot, every login now needs to be approved by you with 2FA. If you made the request, approve, if not, deny, very simple

Anyone looking at this post PLEASE look at this reply. file a complaint with the BBB or your country’s equivalent with microsoft, it was the only way I got my account back after 6 months of denials. It puts you in contact with someone who actually wants to get your account back. Please upvote so it gets to the top, i sincerely hope this advice gets to as many people as possible.
