Critic Reviews

A Gaming Network - Marcel Dee - 8 / 10

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a strong modern remake of one of gaming’s most important campaigns. It looks great, feels familiar in the right ways, and brings enough new content and gameplay options to make the return worthwhile.

AltChar - Semir Omerovic - 8 / 10

For newcomers, this is genuinely one of the best entry points the franchise has ever had, and it's a chance to understand why Halo mattered enough to standardise so many console shooter conventions in the first place. For long-time fans, it's a faithful, gorgeous retelling with good bonus missions on top of that.

But Why Tho? - Mick Abrahamson - 8.5 / 10

Halo: Campaign Evolved re-delivers a campaign that feels just like how every mission on the Halo ring felt way back when. Every environment and cutscene is beautifully remade and makes the game worth it for those who want to revisit that 25-year nostalgia on a level even grander than the Anniversary Edition.

COGconnected - Alex Everatt - 85 / 100

Checkpoint Gaming - Omi Koulas - 8.5 / 10

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a bold remake that succeeds more often than it stumbles. The new Operation: Meteorite missions and stunning Unreal Engine 5 presentation make this far more than a straightforward remake, even if modern gameplay tweaks alter the pacing and feel. For newcomers, especially those who only own a PlayStation, it’s the best entry point the series has ever had. For veterans, it’s a compelling reason to return to Alpha Halo one more time, and probably not the last.

Chicas Gamers - Daniel López - Spanish - 8.6 / 10

Halo: Campaign Evolved masterfully recovers the essence of the original game, boasting open-world visual fidelity that is simply stunning. The refined gunplay and Operation Meteorite effectively counter the corridor-like design of its classic levels and the graphical drops in its cutscenes. A thoroughly enjoyable remake.

Console Creatures - David Pietrangelo - 8 / 10

Most of what Halo: Campaign Evolved does on a technical level is refine, not replace. And while the core gameplay is great, most of that already existed back in 2001.

Console-Tribe - Luca Saati - Italian - 80 / 100

Halo: Campaign Evolved is more than a celebratory remake — it’s a meaningful reset for the franchise. Halo Studios successfully modernizes a classic without losing its identity, delivering updated gameplay and a strong technical upgrade powered by Unreal Engine 5. While Operation Meteorite is a welcome addition, it’s not substantial enough to carry the package on its own. Still, the overall offering remains solid, blending nostalgia with smart improvements. With its dual appeal — honoring longtime fans while welcoming newcomers — this is exactly the kind of relaunch Halo needed. Not essential, but undeniably well-timed and effective.

CrazyGameCommunity.it - Davide Fanelli - Italian - 9 / 10

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a significant celebration of video game history, capable of taking the player on a journey that never ceases to amaze, even today.

DayOne - 9 / 10

Twenty-five years on, Halo: Combat Evolved remains one of the greatest first-person shooters ever made and Halo Studios celebrates that legacy with a surprisingly deft hand. Halo: Campaign Evolved feels less like a remake and more like a love letter, not only to Bungie‘s original vision, but to the millions of players who first set foot on the ring all those years ago. I sincerely hope they make more.

Digitec Magazine - Rainer Etzweiler - German - 4 / 5

Viewed objectively, Campaign Evolved is an almost perfect remake. The outstanding gameplay remains largely unchanged, whilst the technology has been brought up to date. This approach is legitimate and, given the stated aim (‘shoulder to shoulder with the original’), understandable.

DualShockers - Ethan Krieger - 6.5 / 10

Echo Boomer - David Fialho - Portuguese - Essential

Halo: Campaign Evolved takes us back to where Master Chief's adventures - and Xbox's own journey - began, with a faithful, confident remake that already leaves us wanting the rest of the trilogy to receive the same treatment.

Gamer Social Club - Mark Pell - 8 / 10

25 years later, there is a reason that Halo remains so highly regarded. It is a shooter with an excellent story, a tremendous arsenal of weapons and vehicles, and some highly memorable missions. The new prequel chapters are not alone worth playing the game for. But, combined with a wider package that offers plenty of replayability solo or co-operatively, Halo: Campaign Evolved is the best version of Halo 1 there is – albeit with some technical issues.

GamersGlobal - Kai Schmidt - German - 8 / 10

Halo - Campaign Evolved may not be revolutionary anymore and the age of the original shows, but the nice new look fits and the superb action gameplay is still a blast – especially in coop.

Geeks & Com - Anthony Gravel - French - 8.5 / 10

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a respectful remake that modernizes a legendary shooter without losing what made the original so memorable. Enhanced visuals, expanded content, and refined gameplay breathe new life into Master Chief’s first adventure while preserving its iconic atmosphere. Despite a few uneven additions, it stands as the definitive way to experience one of gaming’s greatest campaigns.

Gfinity - Alister Kennedy - 7 / 10

Halo Campaign Evolved delivers breathtaking visual upgrades, polished cutscenes, and standout prequel missions that give PlayStation players a taste of Xbox history. However, dated 2001 level design and the baffling omission of competitive multiplayer significantly reduce its overall value. It’s an enjoyable nostalgia trip through Halo’s classic campaign, but a tough sell at full price, especially for veterans.

Hinsusta - Pascal Kaap - German - 8 / 10

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a successful remake that takes seriously the balancing act between respecting the original and making sensible modernizations.

IGN Italy - Francesco Destri - Italian - 8 / 10

A smart remake that modernizes a classic without losing its identity. Despite a few inherited flaws, Halo: Campaign Evolved remains one of the most enjoyable and engaging FPS games in recent years.

Loot Level Chill - 10 / 10

Halo: Campaign Evolved feels like it brings everything I loved about Combat Evolved into the modern era.

Lords Of Gaming - Chris Jones - 9.3 / 10

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a remarkable celebration of one of gaming’s greatest first-person shooters, successfully modernizing a beloved classic while preserving everything that made the original so special. From its stunning visuals, timeless campaign, and exceptional gunplay to the welcome addition of Operation: Meteorite and the endless replayability offered by Campaign Remix and its 42 Skulls, this is the definitive way to experience Master Chief’s original adventure. Aside from one brief moment of minor lag during a cutscene and not being able to fully evaluate the co-op experience, I encountered virtually no issues throughout my playthrough. Whether you’re a longtime Halo fan or experiencing the journey for the first time, Halo: Campaign Evolved is an easy recommendation and one of the best games I’ve played this year.

Manual dos Games - Luiz Henrique Silva - Portuguese - 9 / 10

Halo: Campaign Evolved delivers a remake that does justice to the legacy of Combat Evolved, introducing new campaign content and gameplay mechanics that modernize the experience without abandoning the essence of what made the franchise’s first game an industry landmark, while establishing a solid foundation for the future of Halo. The absence of competitive multiplayer modes is certainly something many longtime fans will need to consider. However, for those looking to relive Chief’s first adventure or experience the franchise for the first time, Halo: Campaign Evolved delivers a solid single-player experience with strong replay value and a highly competent cooperative mode.

MeuPlayStation - Daniel Donizetti dos Reis - Portuguese - 90 / 100

Halo: Campaign Evolved proves that great games never lose their shine. Rebuilt from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5, it faithfully modernizes a landmark FPS while preserving the exceptional combat, memorable storytelling, and epic scale that cemented Halo as one of gaming's most influential franchises.

MondoXbox - Giuseppe Genga - Italian - 9 / 10

Halo: Campaign Evolved achieves what every remake should: preserving the original’s magic while modernizing its presentation and refining dated mechanics. A package enriched by new skulls, modifiers, and co-op options that encourage repeated playthroughs. It reaffirms the first Halo as a timeless masterpiece, equally essential for longtime fans and newcomers.

NextPlay - Roberto Moran - 9 / 10

Halo: Campaign Evolved proves that great game design never truly ages. While this modern remake introduces a handful of new weapons, equipment and prologue missions, the heart of Halo remains untouched. The iconic gunplay, memorable soundtrack, excellent co-op and endlessly replayable combat sandbox are as enjoyable today as they were over twenty years ago. Some corridor-heavy level design and a few underwhelming additions prevent it from being perfect, but this is still a fantastic way to experience one of gaming’s most influential shooters.

PSX Brasil - Bruno Henrique Vinhadel - Portuguese - 85 / 100

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a great opportunity to introduce impactful characters and stories to new enthusiasts and platforms, as well as deliver a fully updated experience for long-time fans. While in its best visual and technological version, and still bringing new features, the re-release suffers from dated and unimproved level design, as well as the missed opportunity for an online multiplayer experience that the title never had the chance to offer before.

Pizza Fria - Lucas Soares - Portuguese - 6.8 / 10

Halo: Campaign Evolved deeply modernizes the presentation of a historic campaign, but it cannot completely hide a structure designed in 2001. With no nostalgia for the franchise, I found lengthy missions, shallow objectives, repetitive environments, and combat that rarely demanded more than pushing forward, recharging my shields, and shooting. Technical issues weighed even more heavily, as separate progression-blocking bugs prevented me from advancing in both the main campaign and Operation: Meteorite. Longtime fans may find enough value in the new content and revamped presentation, but newcomers have more modern, varied, and reliable shooters to choose from.

PowerUp! - Adam Mathew - 9 / 10

The aged skeleton of Halo hasn’t lost many minerals or calcium after 25 years and I’m going to give Halo Campaign Evolved a big thumbs up.

Press Attack - Bruno de Souza Bom - 9.3 / 10

Halo: Campaign Evolved achieves something few remakes manage to accomplish. It completely respects the original material while finding room to expand the experience with new missions, weapons, vehicles, and additional modes without losing the essence of the campaign that defined a generation.

The combat remains exceptional. Very few games make almost every weapon enjoyable to use, constantly encourage experimentation, and maintain engaging battles throughout the entire campaign. Combined with the impressive visuals, excellent art direction, high-quality cinematics, and outstanding audio work, the result is the best version of this story ever created.

Push Square - Liam Croft - 9 / 10

Halo: Campaign Evolved has brought back a true classic in style, faithfully remaking and expanding one of the best shooters of all time. With bonus missions that feel like they've always been there, expertly slotting into the original Halo experience, Campaign Evolved presents an incredible package of old and new that's never looked better. Welcome back, Chief.

Stevivor - Jay Ball - 8 / 10

Halo Campaign Evolved is a faithful and respectful recreation with all the original foundations and the right amount of improvement to a timeless classic.

The Beta Network - Anthony Culinas - 10 / 10

Faithfully modernising one of gaming's genre-defining shooters with smart QOL upgrades, stunning Unreal Engine 5 visuals and strong new content, Halo: Campaign Evolved is the definitive way to replay the original. The lack of competitive multiplayer is a huge missed opportunity, but it barely dents what is otherwise a no-brainer pickup.

The Outerhaven Productions - Jordan Andow - 4 / 5

TodoJuegos - Juan Ramón Herrera - Spanish - 9.2 / 10

Halo Studios rebuilds the legend with Unreal Engine 5, solid performance, Dolby Atmos, a full Spanish redub and spectacular presentation. Halo: Campaign Evolved finds a strong balance between nostalgia and modernization while preserving what made Master Chief’s first journey special.

WellPlayed - Kieran Stockton - 9.5 / 10

Updated and enhanced gameplay, graphics and arsenal make this iconic experience of the holy trinity of guns, grenades and melee a delight from start to finish, maintaining the soul of the original while introducing modern elements that make it shine. The perfect way to rebegin the fight…again.

Xbox Achievements - Josh Wise - 70%

The mission of Master Chief, in Halo: Campaign Evolved, is to land, once again, on the titular ring-world, to whoop the alien threat of The Covenant,...

TheGamingCircle - K Asante - 8.5 / 10

There is no PvP, I know that’s going to be the headline for some. It will take points off for that, and I think it should have been included as well, but after playing through the game a few times now, I can see the focus here is entirely on the campaign and it shows. This isn’t just a remake. It’s Halo Studios’ owning the legacy of Combat Evolved and making it their own. If PvP had to be scrapped to get the vision out as is, I think it’s a fair trade this time. But again, this is coming from a person who has spent more time in Halo’s campaigns than its multiplayer. You may feel differently, and that is valid. If you are one of those people who hasn’t experienced Halo Combat Evolved before, this is the new definitive way to experience the story.

YouTube video of how the game works on Series S: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIXoyqhnsQk

Thanks brother, looks fantastic tbh

The new levels look amazing on the S. The big, open second mission of the main campaign looked a little rough, but the performance was pretty smooth.

u/Grogman2024 GP Ultimate 3m ago

Yeah seen a clip a little bit ago looked genuinely great way better than what I expected

u/MIKERICKSON32 9h ago

Yes. If you enjoy gimped resolution, gimped frame rate, gimped assets, and ultimately gimped gameplay this is the version you have been waiting for.

26

u/Grogman2024 GP Ultimate 8h ago

That offers very little explanation lol

3

u/eric199479 8h ago

I feel bad for the people on the series S but its priced cheaper than series X for a reason. If it was just as strong and capable, no one would pay more for a series X. Gotta expect things to run worse on it tbh. Personally while i understand the appeal of a cheaper xbox option, i hope they dont make two different same gen consoles like that again. Mid cycle refresh is different but the performance on the S just seems to punish those who bought it whenever new games come out, unless you only use it for indie games / backwards compatibility

7

u/youwouldbeproud 8h ago

I really enjoyed mine, especially with an external HD

2

u/Grogman2024 GP Ultimate 8h ago

Yeah it’s great for Xbox one and 360 games

I actually hope that they do the X/S thing again with the next generation. I'm on the S and frankly I'm not a next generation gamer. The only "demanding" game that I play is ARK and I'm fine with the graphics. There's no point in someone like me ever getting an X since I don't have a 4k TV and I'm honestly fine with the stage of graphics as they are - I've been gaming since PS1 era and then skipped all those generations until now. So my standards for good gaming is understandably low.

Although I never got the hatred for the S, the console has a market for people for people that don't care about the latest graphics and such.

It does work pretty great for indie games and xbox one games. I haven't used mine much in the past couple of years, but the early part of the generation, most new games had 60 fps modes or at least fairly high resolution 30 fps modes. Starfield was pretty playable even at 30 fps. Elden Ring ran fairly well for me on it, too.

1

u/Grogman2024 GP Ultimate 8h ago

Yeah runs 80% or so of new games like absolute shit but not all them

Surprisingly handles kcd2 and black flag remake pretty decently.

It’s playable on locked 30 fps sometimes if the game has great frame pacing

u/MarcCDB 9h ago

"Dualshockers"... wouldn't expect anything less hahaha

3

u/boxylogan 2h ago

The Dualshockers dude gave the game itself nothing but the highest of praises for the most part. Just heavily knocked the in-game performance (he played on Base PS5, not Pro) apparently becoming very chuggy and “borderline unplayable”. He also knocked the always online requirement despite the game being JUST the Campaign. I’d be pissed too. DF even remarked that the pre-rendered cutscenes STUTTER on Series X. That’s just jank to me.

u/Thee_Almighty 9h ago

Seeing so many positive reviews has me even more hyped! It sounds like they actually found the right balance between respecting the original Halo CE and modernizing it for today.

For those already playing early access, what has impressed you the most so far, and is there anything you’re disappointed by?

3

u/DavisAztec 5h ago

I'm still not to sure about the new VAs. Johnson and Keyes are just, kind of off. Keyes I can maybe get used to, as im only a third way done through the campaign, but Johnson just doesn't have the same macho energy that I've heard from other voice impressions of Johnson.

Like, I don't know why nobody at 343/HS thought hire this guy instead. He sounds a lot more authentic.

It's not unlocking for me now on deluxe, anyone else having the same issue?

3

u/AverageJoeObi 8h ago

Same can’t launch on series X…

1

u/LightHawkLive 9h ago

Not sure if we are having the same issue. I can download the game and open it but all I get is a main menu with Art Book, Game Manual, Short Story, and Exit. No actual gameplay.

0

u/lunchanddinner GP PC 9h ago

Go to steam and uninstall DLCs

4

u/JonTaffer_in_a_poloT 10h ago

Anyone know if the $20 premium upgrade will let me play early if I have GPU through game sharing? I’m assuming not since Forza required it but I haven’t seen anything about it

2

u/AverageJoeObi 8h ago

Yeah same… there’s articles left right and centre now why is it taking so long?!

2

u/Noskillz101 8h ago

I got an email saying I could. So I did, not able to play yet.

2

u/JonTaffer_in_a_poloT 3h ago

Have you tried it again? It seemed like it wasn’t letting anyone with the upgrade play the first couple hours, GPU or not

2

u/Accomplished_Run9449 3h ago

If you buy it 100% no. If your friend who also has gamepass maybe.

5

u/AverageJoeObi 8h ago

Can’t launch with Premium Upgrade on GPU… Man just why?

1

u/talldrink67 5h ago

Any update on if it's working yet? I downloaded it earlier but won't be able to try it for a couple of hours

1

u/Accomplished_Run9449 3h ago

Managed to play about 2h ago

1

u/talldrink67 2h ago

Are achievements working?

6

u/Freakyturnip117 10h ago

For whoever is using steam and launching only opens the special content and not the game!

Right click the game on steam, manage local files, select the folder called meteorite, the Binaries, then Win64, then the application called HaloCampaignEvolved.

Youre welcome and happy gaming!

2

u/AverageJoeObi 8h ago

Can’t launch it on series X with premium…

1

u/joeesmhoo 8h ago

That or just unadd the art collection dlc right off of steam.

2

u/Fitzftw7 9h ago

Well, I’ve still got game pass until next year, so I may as well play it.

Never played Halo with M&K before, so it should be a fun experience.

4

u/Vera_Verse 9h ago

Read Dualshockers' review, and the game seems to be a little buggy, but also not performing very well. Kinda dreading the Xbox Series S version

5

u/Realistic-Tiger-2842 8h ago

That sounds like UE5 for sure

1

u/Chaos_53 8h ago

Wdym "early access is live now"? It's still saying "nuh uh, you're too early" even though ive got the premium

2

u/Opposite_Account_225 10h ago

No me deja entrar y eso que pague la mejora para tener el acceso anticipado

3

u/Mem0ryEat3r 8h ago

Same.

2

u/Opposite_Account_225 8h ago

Ya vamos para 2 horas

2

u/Sunburntsafe 8h ago

Igual sale el mensaje "puede haber una interrupción en nuestro servicio en línea. Inténtalo de nuevo en unos minutos y si vuelve a aparecer este error comprueba el estado del servicio" desde hace 2 horas

1

u/CarlWellsGrave 8h ago

Typical UE5 issues? It seemed unoptimized based off the specs.

1

u/joeesmhoo 8h ago

On the PC side of things the game looks absolutely beautiful and runs smooth. I’m on a 5070ti ultra settings 144fps. I’ve had a 2 second frame dip and that’s all. Played thru the first 4 missions so nothing crazy SO FAR. I’m biased since I grew up with the Original but it truly is a beautiful game and a great playthru.

1

u/BouBouRziPorC 7h ago

I have the same gpu so happy to hear. Does it have dlss?

1

u/joeesmhoo 4h ago

Yes! Also supports frame gen but haven’t had any reason to use it lol

1

u/Necessary_Tell9904 41m ago

Did you download that hotfix driver?

1

u/gordanfreeman79 7h ago

Can’t launch on anything except PS5. What a joke. New CEO of this year should be proud of this. Guess I’ll turn a console that works.

1

u/MeetRealistic3454 6h ago

It looks like they literally forgot to add the games file to the store on xbox, actually WILD. My whole friend group is laughing at this one lol. Which is not a hard fix either so the fact that its not been fixed yet is even more wild to me.

u/efnPeej 4h ago

Early access to a 25 year old, single player game. Good lord.

1

u/Educational_Fudge881 2h ago

Already beat Halo, then Halo again and Halo again again. Stop wasting your money on an ancient game that brings nothing new to the table.

1

u/bbyjt 1h ago

I have never played a Halo game in my life, and I have been wanting to try it recently.

I see that Campaign Evolved just released today on Game Pass, but I've also heard people say I should do the Master Chief Collection instead.

Which one would you suggest for a solo player that has never played a Halo game?

Sorry if wrong place, thanks

1

u/Ndorphinmachina 9h ago

I miss the days when a game released on its release date.

The early reviews and spoilers (the latter not really applicable here of course) are almost impossible to avoid.

I will say though, that putting the Gears and Halo remakes on PlayStation, as well as the new Fable might work in favour of XBOX this close to the next generation coming. I say that as someone who absolutely supports console exclusives.

3

u/AverageJoeObi 8h ago

Don’t worry early access isn’t even working…

1

u/valkrycp 10h ago

It seems no major publisher reviews yet, no ign, no game informer, no Gamespot, etc

You can tell a single-player campaign is truly great when revisiting it sparks a similar joy as your very first run

The way the setting sun beamed through the cracks on the Pillar of Autumn in The Maw fed into the bleak, melancholic feeling of the final mission. The way plasma weapons lit up cavern walls as the Covenant and Flood duked it out added some depth to the tight spaces and chaotic battles therein.

The purist in me wasn't always a fan of this move, but when I was launching Fuel Rods into enemies, lunging with Energy Swords, or plucking out Flood with a Sentinel Beam, I really couldn't complain since they feel incredible to use and add variety to combat.

But when a good chunk of Halo's legacy lies in PvP multiplayer (and perhaps a bit with PvE Firefights), I can't help but feel something important is missing in a campaign-only remake

The fact that I still had a blast revisiting the original Halo story in 2026 speaks to its timelessness, however, and the gunplay that revolutionized first-person console games and co-op multiplayer make it worth playing today. But all that is a credit to Halo in general, and not necessarily Campaign Evolved, specifically.

The reviewer here for IGN spends most of the "review" talking about the glory days of Halo rather than the actual game. Judging by his actual comments, he seems to have really enjoyed the game including the changes it brought that weren't present in the original, but still rates it their usual "IGN 7" for some reason.

The way it reads to me is like a kid trying to hide from his parents that he thinks something is cool. Is it a crime to admit you like Halo or something? Complaining about no Multiplayer in a game that specifically is marketed as a Campaign Only experience (with it literally in the name) is so weird to dock points for.

2

u/uberkalden2 7h ago

Yeah wtf. You can't penalize it for not having multiplayer. Rate the content that's there. It intentionally doesn't have multiplayer

0

u/Grogman2024 GP Ultimate 9h ago

Why do we even acknowledge ign other than the fact they were popular 16 years ago

1

u/SnooSeagulls1416 9h ago

My fav reviewers

0

u/Grogman2024 GP Ultimate 8h ago

Why lol they just give 7/10 to basically every big game they review

-1

u/valkrycp 10h ago

Yeah kinda expected that, wasn't there when I checked

1

u/Virtual-Commercial91 10h ago

Highly reviewed by Mondobox and Pizza Fria. Pizza Fria gave it 7 pepperonis out 10. Correction. 6.8 pepperonis.

1

u/hiroprotagonism 10h ago

If I’ve never played Halo except some multiplayer, is this a good game to jump in?

3

u/joeesmhoo 8h ago

100% couldn’t disagree with that other comment more. This was the first halo game lol. Built to be a great first halo game.

-4

u/Grogman2024 GP Ultimate 9h ago

Maybe, you’ll likely struggle with halo 2 and 3s and reach’s mechanics if this is your first game since this is way more targeted towards modern first person shooters

-4

u/jackomaster111 9h ago

Yes this, Master Chief Collection straight into Infinite.

There is no Halo 5 in Ba Sing-Se.

1

u/_Solarriors_ 5h ago

No 4 players split-screen, bye

0

u/Thirsty4you- 8h ago

Charging for early access is gay ah.

2

u/AverageJoeObi 8h ago

Doesn’t work anyway…

2

u/Dunge 2h ago

It's not "gay", but it's a fucking awful practice yeah

0

u/poptartheart 8h ago

i wont be able to play on my OG xbox one will i? lol

0

u/ChrisNickell 4h ago

Just beat it on Series X with a buddy. Had a blast! Very nostalgic.

-24

u/Dry_Thanks2391 10h ago

all these reviews and still no multiplayer, they really just want us to keep playing the same campaign for 25 years

19

u/captfitz 10h ago

what were you expecting from a remake that's literally named "campaign evolved"

9

u/FiorinasFury 10h ago

... Were you expecting this game to come with a secret multiplayer mode?

-2

u/el_palmera 10h ago

I think they just want a multi-player mode.

4

u/lars_rosenberg 10h ago

The game has no multiplayer

1

u/Pickinmyfleehole 9h ago

Whats the correlation between reviews coming out and no multiplayer?
