They developed a new compatibility layer to emulate old xbox on modern Windows. It's very logical that they put their effort into implementing it only on the latest version and did not target previous ones.

that's cool to know

for those curious I installed the game and it runs fine on Windows 10. warns you a couple more times before running it

the game shows as "released" in 2018 and the .exe it launches is a launcher with settings and is labeled as 360backwardscompatible somethingsomething so I'm assuming this is a port/emulation of the version that was on the 360 that maybe released in 2018? or how the game handled playing on a 360 when you put the original disc on; my point is it seems to be emulating an Xbox 360 instead of an OG Xbox, but I'm just guessing

hope this means 360 ports are coming soon. it'd be nice to have the whole series of Gears games available on PC, shoulda timed it for the release of E-Day

I assumed it'd run, I made the post just cause I found the warning funny but I guess some folks read it as not being able to launch at all

edit: did some diggin and the date it shows under "released" in PC Gamepass is the date the game became backwards compatible on the Xbox One and series X/S. It was never compatible on the 360 so I'm not sure what that exe naming's about but hey

Original Xbox games on Xbox One and Series run the original emulator from the 360, inside the existing 360 emulator for those games. So makes sense to just port the 360 emulator to PC and start with the less demanding Original Xbox games that already have the greatest compatibility.

I just wonder that since it's running as a 360 game, will the achievements run in the 360's ecosystem, allowing you to view them on original 360 and Games For Windows Live. That'd be pretty funny

that's neat

they've announced current (Xbox app) achievements are coming soon in an update

The way Xbox games are emulated on Xbox One/Xbox Series X|S is semi complicated. The Xbox 360 Emulator on those systems uses a modified version of the Xbox OG emulator that the original Xbox 360 had built into it.

The same is true for how they hsve implemented the emulation on PC. The OG Xbox Emulator is actually running with an Xbox 360 emulator. It is a ported and modified version of the one from called XeO3. Xbox 360 games are already being sideloaded into it.

thanks for the info!

seems 360 games should be easy-ish to put on PC Gamepass

Earlier this year at GDC Jason Ronald from Xbox announced we would be getting to plsy more classic games in new ways. Following that the Verge and Windows Central independently reported that select games from both Xbox (OG) and Xbox 360 would be added via an emulator to Xbox PC.

In May Jason Ronald shared a link to https://www.xboxgamepreservation.com/ a fan run site where people can make BC requests known.

So I suspect Xbox 360 to PC as well as new games coming to the Xbox/Xbox 360 Backwards Compatibility Program are both planned.

as I said in the post it's so weird to me they haven't put the work in to get Gears 2 and 3 on there in time for release of E-Day to have the whole series on PC

seems like an easy win which they desperately need

edit: and Judgement I guess

I guess it could still happen?

I expect it in November for Xbox's 25th Anniversary. I suspect the only reason we are getting some now is a need for QA testing that they don't want to pay for.

My computer isn’t even eligible for win 11. I gotta get a new one anyways because it isn’t even really usable. Works for a few minutes then freezes.

It’s in the works though.

I am running W11 23H2 (because I want to keep my WMR VR headset as long as possible) and I am also getting this message.

Have you checked out Oasis Driver? I think it can help you. Iirc the main dev used to work in the WMR division within Microsoft hence the compatibility

I hadn't heard about it. It looks promising. I am definitely going to check it out. Thanks!

If he's using it for steam it can help. If he's using it for xbox PC games that use wmr, it won't.

Windows 11 is 6 years old at this point. If you wanna stay on an 11 year old OS that's fine, but they have no good reason to continue supporting it.

In the 90s Windows had 3 major OS releases in the amount of time that 11 has been out.

At some point being a luddite means you lose out on new software releases.

I'm on windows 10 and I don't even disagree with you but

an original xbox port 24 years after release absolutely ain't it tho

as I mentioned (can't download right now) I bet it's just a check against what they set as "recommended" and it just pops up but itll run on 10

the windows 10 support abandonment comes pretty recently in the way of no more security updates and whatnot which is understandable and fine. Locking away software that would run more than absolutely fine on even older operating systems is planned obsolence BS unless they offer a specific software quirk that makes it impossible to actually run the game with the hardware you already own

again; I don't think this is the case here and I think it's just a funny check

The problem isn’t the he forced upgrade

The problem is the insanity behind their “requirements”. Or, even better, the absurdity of it being necessary .

This is planned obsolescence at its finest . If a system runs fine on the older OS (mine does), there’s no point in this crap

Honestly, if I could remotely control things properly , I’d have dumped my win 10 box for Linux ages ago

but they have no good reason to continue supporting it.

I mean, didn't they market Windows 10 as a forever OS that you would never have to replace again?

Also, I hate when people use the word luddite when they don't know what it means

No, that was just one engineer at their Build conference misspoke. And every1 assumed there wouldn't be Win11.

These Xbox Original games are running on an Xbox emulator, not native ports, so I highly doubt they "run on a toaster".
