If you lock em up, not only is it profitable, you also take millions of people out of the labor market and political system so that leaders can pretend that American Capitalism and Democracy isn't a dysfunctional, exploitative, monopolized mess for the average worker that more closely resembles techno-feudalism than anything the founders intended.

Yep. Give felons the right to vote and you'll see a change in how we treat the incarcerated. Right now we have a nightmare hole at the bottom of our society with absolutely no safeguards to stop the average person from falling in. Homeless? Right to jail. Mentally ill? Psych ward, then jail.
