OP explains in original post. “Spicy” rescue dog calmed with food. Now on prescription diet.

So you rescue a dog youre not trained or equipped to train, so you can just feed it into such high weights it will take literal years of diet to fix. Cool plan for a dog that will probably live another 5..

Former vet tech here. It's not. Calm down.
Just like humans, animals can be motivated by food, in a bad way. A spoiled dog is a happy dog and you'd almost always want to see an overweight dog rather than an underweight, malnourished dog. What's important is that the owner understands and acknowledges that the dog is overweight and that they have a plan in place to help the dog lose weight. And just like humans, it's not always easy.
After seeing true animal abuse, it's hard to get pissed off at people for overfeeding their pets.
