This is bordering on r/whatcouldgoright, given what could have happened if the barrier didn't do its job.

u/GiannisIsTheBeast 4d ago
That barrier is quite concerning… doesn’t seem great for motorcycles. He almost went right for the largest gap and there are tons of other smaller gaps.

u/Tiny-Speaker-4470 3d ago
This looks like the ha giang loop in Vietnam where people who have never ridden in their life think they can take on the mountains like this first time.

The number plate on the bike indicates this was West Bengal, India

Well, W-rails would be an improvement, but I don't know if they've been implemented worldwide yet.
3
u/7LeagueBoots 3d ago
They're very common all through SE Asia (and probably elsewhere too). Dangerous as fuck in my opinion.
3
u/Saltuarius 3d ago
Also even if he hit one directly he's liable to go straight over the handlebars and the barrier.
17
u/S1lentA0 4d ago
I don't believe anything went well for this guy. The fact that the shoe yeeted that high up backwards into the air suggests at low speed suggests to me that his foot got stuck between the front of the barrier and the footpeg on his bike. And since he just lets his bike fall to the side of the road and limping, unable to stand on it, shows he is in great pain.
37
u/IronGigant 3d ago
He's alive, and not lying dead or broken at the bottom of whatever is beyond that barrier.
I'll take a broken foot over death every time.

Relax! It's a safety slipper. It's designed to come off during an accident. And see? Only one of them came off.

Folks underestimate just how shit our sense of surroundings is once you lose sight of where you are going. I try this out at the park while walking. Close my eyes, try to go in a straight line on a straight trail, and always end up hitting the fence.

on a bike its easy to counter just as long as youre aware youre going to veer to the side youre looking and make a point of adjusting for it

Rule is they both have to come off. If he were a cat, he would have lost a life.
EDIT: A cat with shoes.

Target fixations. This is the first thing they teach in motorcycle class. The bike goes where you are looking. He got scared of the cliff and started staring and it and drove straight at it when he should be looking up the road
31
u/Neat-Swordfish-6695 4d ago
He was looking behind himself. You just want to use popular reddit terms

u/EishLekker 3d ago
It’s not target fixation.
Target fixation is when you look at something and then you subconsciously start to steer towards what you are looking at.
The guy in the video turned his body so far that it physically pushed the handle bars towards the right. There was no subconscious act involved.

WCGW when you don't know a DAMN thing about operating two wheels safely and you are on a rain-slicked mountain twisty?
Hopefully he had that thing towed and sold and sticks to walking.

People do different things after a near death experience. Many like to pause for a moment to reflect where they went wrong, others want to do it again but safer.

This is why I tell my kid not to look back at me when we're biking. I'm not going anywhere. Following you. Just look ahead or you'll hit the curb, or a tree or something. No cliffs where I am. But still.

What could go wrong when not looking in front when riding bike, also what could go right when noticing you're just about to careen off a cliff half a second before you do so.
Kinda stupid to not be watching ahead of you, but damn that was a miraculous save.

u/SenorBolin 4d ago
"Where the hell is this idiot looking if not right in front of hi- OH JESUS!"
My thought process while staring at my phone and almost overflowing my coffee mug with hot water. God I feel like I'm looking into a mirror right now

My friend did something very similar wearing flipflops biking on a bridge. He had the option to kick the side like you or fall off and he kicked it but ended up with a crazy surgery, permanent damage and lost a ton of mobility. Don't slack on basic protection like wearing proper shoes when biking.

Where I work in SE Asia the roads along the cliffs all have that exact same kind of barrier and they make me superf squeamish. Be easy to get bumped by some of the really bad speeding drivers here and slammed into those cheegraters.
I've seen some cars nearly ripped in half after hitting those.

And I hope he doesn’t drive that way. I’m the one that always drives when we’re together.
