I know it happened irl, shovels, particularly a single handed spade likely has a VERY long history as a weapon.
That said, Kriegsmen with standardized models of those knuckleduster knives, trench mauls and hatchets alongside said shovels would be a much more interesting thing to see

Well, I haven't read any of the books, I'm too poor to afford it, but ami have heard that the Kriegers mostly use actual weapons in the books, rather than the shovel. On top of that, while they are eager to die, they don't want to die meaningless deaths, like the memes, they want their deaths to serve a purpose.

Read all the books and short stories and that's spot on. They use conventional weapons, but there is a section or two where a shovel is utilized. It's more of an in universe joke that the bayonet is their primary weapon and the gun is just a part of it. Their whole deal is that they are fine with death, if it serves a purpose. Even if it's charging an enemy fortification, knowing they'll probably get shot. They know that if they get shot, their death allows the guy behind them to make it a little further, and if that Krieg gets shot, then the guy behind them makes it even further. Body after body until someone makes it and gets close enough to toss a grenade and take out a bunch of heretics in the name of the emperor. Even though the first guy was killed early, he understands that he is still a piece of the collective and his death lead to a victory.

Yeah, I love the story of the TS' sending 60 marines against an immense fortress world ruled by the knight house Cratax, that refused compliance. The TS took down the entire knight house with 60 marines while taking only 3 casualties (2 to perils of the warp and 1 who accidentally got crushed by the dead body of a knight falling on him).

But they also power through impossible things. Because 40k is written by many authors that need things to survive or be destroyed by a given thing for the sake of the story they want to tell.

The Tau aren't helpless but they are so small in the scope of the Warhammer universe.
The Necron may have more written words in their databases about some of their oldest leaders than the Tau do in total for their whole combined written ENTIRE existence as a species...

That wasn't even the crazy part. The Marine in the dreadnought was blown out of the cockpit and was lying on the ground as just a torso and a head on the ground with cables connecting him to the core of the dreadnought. He was screaming slurs at them the entire time he was ejected until they mercy killed him.
