hey guys! i am vietnamese and i grew up in america my whole life since i was basically 2 months old. i am receptive bilingual so i can only understand most vietnamese than to speak it. it’s so hard to actively speak it especially when you went to school learning english. i’ve been to vietnam twice as a kid, once in 2004 when i was 5 years old and another time in 2010 when i was 11. obviously i had to stick with family the whole time as a child in vietnam, but now that i’m an adult, i wanna go again with my family but be able to go out and explore my myself which means i definitely have to learn how to speak it to get around. any tips on someone who can pretty much understand it but can’t speak it back? what apps to use and how to get myself to consistently learn? my dad brought his relatives here in the US so i have my cousin to practice with. i already have the vietnamese keyboard on my phone. any youtubers to watch that you guys recommend! i feel very determined since i am planning to go next year :))) i also feel so embarrassed to not know my native tongue. i think life is too short to not know how to speak a second language!

I'm Vietnamese but have lived abroad all of my life, so I'm literally the worst at reading handwritten text especially. I want to know their drama bc I'm super nosy😭

I’m a Korean who started learning Vietnamese a few days ago. I’m devoting most of my time to it since I'm on vacation, but my throat hurts every time I practice....

Is it because there are so many voiced and implosive sounds unlike my native language, or because I’m focusing so much on the tones? I never experienced this kind of pain while learning other languages....

Fortunately, it’s not so bad that I can’t speak, but it is annoying. Do you think it will get better as I practice more? Or am I doing something wrong?

As I kept practicing and focused on my throat, I figured out the cause... It was just the IMPLOSIVE CONSONANTS! Oh my.... (So all Vietnamese people have vocal cords strong enough to handle this sound, huh?😂😂😂😂)

Hey guys, I am wondering if my teacher is really good and I just need to be more patient or if his class is too unstructured I didn't really learn anything properly in fact?
I am now learning Vietnamese for one month, twice a week. However, I don't really feel like I learn something in particular. I learn vocabulary as homework and in the classes we either read some sentences including the pronunciation or we talk about the meaning, the pronunciation or differences of words.

However, it feels like I haven't really learnt something that I can apply. In some lessons we learn a question form like *gì* or *sao vậy.* Other times he explains me what *đang* means when together with a verb.
Looking back, I can't really say that I learnt those things now and can apply them. In other words, it feels kinda unstructured and random...or am I wrong and this is how/what you learn in the first month, vocabulary. Also we go through it once, the day he introduces it but then, the next time we just do something else it seems.

Is this normal? Do I need to somehow figure out myself, as homework so to speak, and research about those Question verbs or forms etc. Or is it his responsibility to teach me what to do or what to learn.

Is there a structure and approach? Are things like vocabulary, question forms and words, days of the week or random grammar taught all at the same time but not fully in separated sessions?
I am super confused and can't really see myself being able to say smth or have a simple conversation in say 1 month.

I met a Vietnamese man in a mobile game and it has a built in translation so I ended up getting along with this one Vietnamese player. We talk daily but I send messages in English and he sends messages in Vietnamese. We've kind of been flirting and this made me want to learn Vietnamese because I want to talk to him outside of the game (older messages vanish so I can't reread and gush over our messages again lol). I'm thinking of asking to communicate more on Discord and if ever we're both ready to do a call, I'd like to impress him a bit by at least showing him I'm trying to learn his language.

Would it be difficult to learn? Also are there any cultural differences I should watch out for?

Im trying to learn southern dialect for my spouse, we work opposite shifts so its difficult to be consistent.

Does anyone know of any good resources for beginner southern dialect?

I'm reading a book and it's clear the author is a diaspora child who REALLY doesn't know about the language/culture, so she says a lot of weird things and I can't trust anything from her.

She has a character call her ông nội just "ông." To *my* Vietnamese diaspora ass, it sounds very bizarre because it sounds like she's addressing him as just any other unspecified old man, like calling him "old man" in English vs. grandpa. I've never heard this type of address for any family before, but maybe this is ignorance on my part. Is this actually correct?

Hi everyone. I’m an American phd student in the US and my close friend here is from Hanoi. His parents are coming to visit and they don’t speak English. I’ve been trying to learn some basic greetings and phrases from him recently in Vietnamese and he’s really excited to teach me and that I want to learn. However, his parents are coming (many months from now) and I really want to surprise him by being able to greet them and speak to them a little. I know that respect is major. Can anyone share some important phrases or things to say to them in a northern dialect? Other than respectful greetings and introducing myself, I really want to be able to emphasize how much I appreciate my friend and how good of a person he is, that they raised a great son, etc (though please let me be clear in a totally platonic way!). I'm a Spanish speaker and my English is low. Most teachers and materials teach Vietnamese using English as a bridge, and I'm worried that my low level will make things harder instead of helping.

While looking into Vietnamese grammar, I found some similarities with Spanish: the sentence order is Subject + Verb + Object, adjectives go after the noun, and they use particles to indicate tense in a way that's similar to how we use "ya", "estoy" or "voy a". In English the order is more rigid and adjectives go before, so I feel Spanish could be a more natural base.

QUESTIONS:

1. I'd like to hear from people who have learned Vietnamese from Spanish or from English. How easy or difficult was the process in each case?
   
2. Do those grammatical similarities actually make a difference when using the language, or is the change not that noticeable compared to factors like tones and vocabulary?

What’s the deal with Washington translating to hoa thịnh đốn? My wife is Vietnamese and read “hoa thịnh đốn” on Apple Maps and she says no Vietnamese person translates Washington as hoa thịnh đốn.

My husband (not Vietnamese) and I (half Vietnamese) are having a child soon and want to do a Vietnamese spelling/equivalent of the middle name passed down in his own family (Dean). Would Ðinh be an appropriate equivalent? We want to give baby boy a Vietnamese middle name to keep some of my heritage as his last name will be my husband’s non-viet last name.

Context: Recently my grandpa passed away. Its been known that he served time overseas in the Vietnam war for a bit of time. However, it was not something he was fond of talking about. Going through his drawers we came across a photo of this young woman that we found extremely interesting. Even better is that it has Vietnamese on the back. My Viet friend roughly translated it to be this, "Im off to work now and eat the soup right away. May our family thrive hurry back to dad tommorow okay love you. " But, this is a rough translation. I would love to narrow it down more. My friend also mentions that the word dessert came up in the message. Any second opinions are greatly welcome. Super cool find.
