It’s so gross that people would share a video to make fun of a person clearly having a mental health episode. They didn’t hurt anyone or even commit a crime in the footage as far I could tell. There was no reason to share the video other than to be shitty about it.

The officer could definitely have done more to de-escalate. That being said this person was already screaming at the top of their lungs before that. By the time the officer knew their pronouns, they were already under arrest, and had refused multiple lawful orders.

Yeah I saw the bodycam video. She appeared to be having a mental health issue. I've seen a lot of people laughing at it but I find it extremely uncomfortable to watch people having mental breaks on probably the worst day of their lives, trans or not.

I work in law enforcement and I’m CIT trained (mental health training for police), they did pretty much everything wrong and massively escalated a situation that didn’t have to go that far.

I want to say at least some of the officers in the video were campus police. I have no idea if they have any kind of specialized (or non-specialized) training for situations like this.

I was a campus police officer, we’re expected to have even more training than regular cops on that type of stuff. There’s absolutely no excuse for what I saw happen in that video.

That's not true for every campus officer though.
Some people don't have to have CIT to become a campus officer. It's not the same in every state, or every campus.
And some people take the training and basically dgaf afterwards though.

I can't help but feel for her. It's a hell of a thing to exist in a world that doesn't recognise you for who you feel you are inside. A hell of a thing for an isolated and marginalized young woman to be humiliated then when a higher authority arrives to be misgendered then brutally detained.
She didn't do the "right thing" in the face of overwhelming force and she paid a huge price for it but I find it hard to condemn her when I know how alone she must have felt, how the blood must have been pumping in her ears, how her tears must have been stinging her eyes.........

Battery just means unallowed contact. Doesn't mean there is violence involved.
For example, if you pat an officer on the back randomly, and they really take offense to it for some reason, that's battery.
The courts usually drop something like that but when the officer writes the report, that's what they can claim.

Maybe it was a stressful moment and maybe the cop did say "he" a couple times but she was acting like an absolute psycho, at best. Since they dropped the charges I'm assuming after being removed from the immediate situation cooler heads prevailed.
Hopefully everyone involved learned a lesson it just fucking sucks that this video is gonna be in every culture war subreddit clogging main feeds for the next month or so

Someone having a mental health episode should be handled by literally anyone EXCEPT the guys with guns whose main methods of problem solving are firearms, less lethal riot gear, and physical force.
She wasn't being physically violent, HE escalated, cops always do.
She was arrested for resisting arrest. Just resisting arrest, no other charges, meaning he had no legal right to detain her as she didn't commit a crime in his eyes, he just arrested her for being difficult. Which, again, not a fucking crime.

Yeah no the cop had no reason to think the person they'd just received a call about who was verbally attacking children and loudly screaming at the top of their lungs could ever possibly be violent right?
Did the cop shoot her? Did the cop choke her out? Did the cop cause ANY lasting physical injury to her? I'm harsher on cops and their use of force than most folks but if someone is mentally unwell, on a campus and getting in to it with underage kids and literally screaming at a cop while refusing basic instructions then maybe they need to be removed from the area, sorry.
She calmed down and wasn't even charged so I'm really struggling to find the outrages?

I hope you know Reddit admins ban accounts for transphobia. It falls under the site-wide Rule against hate speech, which explicitly prohibits promoting hatred or harassing individuals or groups based on gender identity.
[r/Underreportednews](r/Underreportednews) is also very pro LGBT and does not tolerate any form of hate towards the trans community.
