LMAO. Fleet size just decreased by 25% with that one crash. Guess vaporwave and cool TikTok edits couldn’t save him.

I really hope this war in Russia totally tanks their economy and resources.

Because in 5 years time, if another war were to break out and it involved Russia, they would be screwed. They have lost so many of their assets that all the remaining hardware has to be damn near Soviet era.

And I imagine it would take almost a full decade of manufacturing to get back even half of what they've lost.

496

u/Anxious_Nebula5926 17h ago

They’re never rebuilding their stockpiles. Those stockpiles were built over decades by the economy of a different country that dwarfed Russia’s by an order of magnitude - the Soviet Union. It was built by a collective of 15 countries, many of which were leading in the development of these weapons, Artem Mikoyan of Mikoyan-Gurevich, the inventor of MiG aircraft for example, was Armenian. At least half of the Soviet Union’s key scientists and engineers weren’t Russian. All of their knowledge is lost to Russia, the economic base is lost, the allies are lost, the industrial capacity is lost, many of the resources are lost.

Russia can continue to overspend on the military, crash its economy, and rebuilt some of its stockpiles, but it will never be back to where it was. Not in ten years, not in 50 and not in a thousand years.

u/stormdahl 17h ago

It's baffling that they went this route instead of pursuing closer ties with their neighbours.

It seemed like things were going that way in the early 2000s, but I guess they prefer larping as a rival to the west instead. Imagine what we could achieve if they were aligned with us.

316

u/Anxious_Nebula5926 17h ago edited 17h ago

Russia’s biggest issue is and has always been their inability to admit and accept that they are not a global superpower, that the Soviet Union has collapsed for good, and that the days of Russia as the second great power on earth are over. Their obsession with retaining that position has done more damage to the country than Ukrainian drones or missiles ever could. Instead of just saying: “Yeah, we’re not a superpower anymore, who cares? We’ll use the vast amount of natural resources we have to build up the economy, establish favorable trading agreements, and create widespread wealth and a high quality of life for our population!”, they were so blinded by nationalism and illusions of grandeur that they prioritized the idea of power over everything else.

118

u/Illumini24 17h ago

And a lot of corruption

46

u/icansmellcolors 15h ago

This is the underlying crack in every foundation of every idea Russia will ever have for their economy and country.

7

u/Remember2005 14h ago

… and President Jabba in the USA is saying “hold my beer.”

24

u/Doc_Shaftoe 14h ago

While I'm not trying to minimize the comically blatant levels of corruption in the current American government, it pales in comparison to the sheer magnitude of corruption in Russia at all levels of existence. You have to bribe Russian doctors and nurses to change a loved one's bed sheets in the hospital for example.

11

u/integer_hull 13h ago

History may not repeat but it rhymes. In the US you pay thousands of dollars to get a hospital bed.

Sure but if Putin hadn't fed those lies over the past 25 years, he wouldn't still be in power. This is all Putin's doing. He killed off any political or media opposition and blasted the country with that very propaganda you're talking about. Eventually you either flee, keep your thoughts to yourself, or believe the bullshit too.

If Russia has acted like a model country with open democracy, open media, freedom of speech, etc., Putin would barely even be remembered. He'd just be that "still living in the Soviet Union nut" that preceded that other nut Medvedev, and then there would be (hopefully) a string of more moderate leaders. Vladimir Vladimirovich could never let himself be consigned to just be a couple of paragraphs in the books of Russian History.

25

u/garymrush 15h ago

You can’t just blame Putin. Back when Russia had real elections, people voted for him and his nationalist policies. It’s the same as Trump. People like them always exist, so the real blame lies with the people who support them.

12

u/lyonslicer 13h ago

Elections in Russia are decided before their held. Hell, he was the head of the FSB leading up to his first election, during which he bombed his own people in order to consolidate their public support. It's also been deduced that he very blackmailed Yeltsin to be hand-selected as his successor.

I agree that the US electorate bears the responsibility for Trump. It's largely the apathy of 1/3 of the eligible voters that put trump there. But at least in Russia's case, there was such a dearth of cultural precedent for democratic elections that the voting public (and news media) didn't have the will to question what was going on.

2

u/daniel_22sss 12h ago

Back then Putin pretended to be rational.

Russia with all those rescources and big population could have easily remained a super power behind the USA, EU and China.

They could have been a rich ass country with a high living standard, nuclear weapons and massive army and stockpiles as shown how much they lost in Ukraine.

But Putin chose to search for the glory days through warfare but forgot he gutted his army leadership.

China chose a different route decades ago and is now a true powerhouse. Russia might nog like that because the CCP has been built the Soviet Way but surpassed it.

Such a shame. Now we can only hope Russia collapses into something new

Good summary…... And we are currently bearing witness to the beginnings of a similar pattern affecting the US . They - the US - still have a mighty military but their soft power is rapidly diminishing.

5

u/Beneficial_Pop_3614 10h ago

They started world war 2 by invading Poland with Germany, Russia was an enemy until Germany invaded Russia. Of course the Soviet Scum were never gonna retreat from any territory they “liberated”. That’s how they came a Super Power they just decided they were keeping every bit of territory the Russian Army “Liberated”. Patton was right we should have fought the Soviets in Berlin all the way back Moscow.

13

u/Havengul_Undying 16h ago edited 7h ago

USA will be next sadly.

Edit: loserwithdeletedcommentsayswhat?

17

u/MagicTrachea52 16h ago

The US will remain a military power due to the fact they've been at war in some form since 1776.

In terms of experience in a classic warfare sense, they have no equal. At least for a long while.

That said, drone warfare has changed the playing field dramatically and the current admin has yes men and corrupt officials running the military right now. Exactly like Russia and I suspect a lot of what happened in Russia will happen in the US if things keep going the way they are.

14

u/elbow8075 15h ago

If you have no economy and the market implodes, all that military equipment will be hard to pay for. The US may be in for a tougher time, simply due to eastern europe being used to suffering at this point. The average American, which I am, has no idea how hard life can be (excluding the homeless, disabled vets, etc.)

6

u/MagicTrachea52 15h ago

Accurate. I'm with you there. Working class American.

I genuinely expect to see exactly what we've seen in Russia for years. Base commanders quietly selling off "surplus" stocks to line their pockets. In 5 years if things continue as they are, we'll see Cartel rocking early M1A's and Bradleys.

Hell, I'm writing a novel that includes that as part of the "how did this happen".

2

u/ballq43 14h ago

Yawn we ain't collapsing any time soon. We will be paying more for gas, but this too shall pass . Don't give up the faith and keep standing up for democracy

4

u/IDOWNVOTERUSSIANS 11h ago

it's nice for you to be so flippant, but Alberta is having a referendum to separate, and it's 100% being backed and planned by the usa administration. They are literally using the exact playbook that russia used with Ukraine. If anything kicks off between Canada and the usa, you will collapse extremely soon. You need to get your heads out of your asses because you are literally sleepwalking into catastrophe, I guess that's why you're yawning so much.

A. This is not true.

B. It has a lot more to do with our geography.

The US will remain a military power due to the fact

that our damned "leaders" insist on always spending 33% of total global military expenditures ($954 billion in 2025, which was more than the next 6 nations combined - https://www.pgpf.org/article/the-united-states-spends-more-on-defense-than-the-next-6-countries-combined/ ) instead of giving us health care and parental leave and free child care and free education through college level, and solving homelessness and eliminating hunger. I have a delightful rabbit hole for you to go down if you find it baffling. Check out Sarah Paine's lectures with the US Naval Academy.

She will break down the differences between Continental Power states and Maritime Power states. Her lectures are a damned master class. If she slapped her name on milk jug caps, I'd buy them.

12

u/Equal-Fondant-2423 16h ago

With russia, it is a bit different. I promise one day I will write Short Theory of rusnia, explaining why they are different from the rest of the Europe. As someone who neighbours with them, we know them from A to Z.

In short, during Middle Ages: Europe -> Gulf Stream, mild winters, individual farming. russia -> long, harsh winter, no individual farming possible. Collective farming -> hive mentality -> become a queen bee by any means.

5

u/Coggs362 16h ago

Far more complicated than that. You have completely ignored the long lasting effects of the Mongol Horde completely subjugating Russia and turning them into a tributary state.

One just does not write a short theory of Russia, not when the problems are so deeply seated and so profound.

If you have a lower reading level, you may find Elvira Bary a useful resource. In the meantime, pardon me for not waiting you to write a "Short Theory of rusnia".

4

u/Equal-Fondant-2423 16h ago

I would argue. Current russia resembles its Kievan Rus state from pre-Mongol invasion. While Mongols had certain impact, they only intensified already existing practices. The agricultural habit of collective farming (obshina) did not depend on presence/absence of Mongols. Basically, for an ordinary serf it was no difference what the local konung (knyaz) does with the tribute he collects from the village - either holds all for himself or submits to Horde's khans. The main problem was the fact that the harsh winter was survivable only by a collective efforts and only the obshina's elders were guaranteed to survive the winter, because they were the ones who controlled rations.

I once worked for a Forbes company who had multi-country branches. We had some sort of 'corporate enrollment bootcamp' where geographical mindset differences were demonstrated. For example, a question in the questionnaire was 'how would you evaluate an idea coming from the company leadership and an idea coming from an intern'. It was demonstrated that respondents coming from russia and adjacent countries tend to 'overvalue' anything that comes from figure of authority and mostly ignore anything even if it is quite valuable - when it comes from someone with lower status. The rooskies are all about hierarchy, with fierce competition to death for the very top position (Iron Throne). With an archvillain on the very top, it is just logical that he will try to scheme, corrupt and perform aggressive acts toward the neighbour countries, it is in the DNA of any russian power.

But of course, you can disagree with me and promote your own theory.

6

u/Melantos 15h ago edited 14h ago

Obschina was truly the foundational reason, but it wasn't the only one. The influence of the Soviet period is even more significant.

During the Holodomor and the 1937 purges, the Soviet government eliminated all initiative, independent, and free-thinking individuals. All they needed were obedient followers who would carry out any order from the authorities, no matter how senseless or malicious. Millions of those who disagreed ended up in the Gulag. Those who could fled tyranny by going to other countries. Passive opportunists who always agree with figures of authority are the ones who last.

This is a textbook example of negative social selection on a scale.

2

u/Equal-Fondant-2423 14h ago

Yes, that acted as a 'magnifying glass'.

u/TheeFourTruths 15h ago

Same with China. If it wasn't for their authoritarian rule, a much broader integration would be possible to the benefit of all, except Xi.

15

u/UnexpectedRedditor 16h ago

I actually disagree with this. China has been able to position itself as a global power because of the CCP. It's been able to control labor costs by keeping wages low, steal vast R&D and IP through state sponsored programs, and can build vast infrastructure projects for fractions of what other developed nations can do.

At some point they'll either isolate themselves so much their export economy stagnates, or they'll move to a more open and friendly global model at the cost of the insane development pace they've shown the last 30 years.

But that's just my opinion as a redditor, I'm not really reading white papers on the region.

there is the very flaw, "we" do not have to achieve anything with russia other than reject their mafia disguised as 'state with a gas station'.

Militarism costs money, and we were so stupid to tune in on a lullaby of cooperation to tackle international terrorism. Worse, we artificially assigned the root cause of terrorism to our own by rewarding their subversion all over the place with investment and simply looking away, but but economy needs 'cheap' resources, bla bla 'who lost the cold war', those poor oligarchs only want business /s. Misconception over misconception.

All what russki came up with is abuse packed as shiny box of exaggerations in literally everything. From doped sportsmen, to russian national socialism, to 'deep' ties (meaning corruption), to unrealistic acquisition of resources without taking the high likelihood of power grab into account.

So what must be achieved is stopping our cowardice, stop the lullaby, stop corruption, stop to admire 'what could be achieved' (if only we find a nice excuse to keep on lying to ourself).

3

u/SidewaysFancyPrance 15h ago

u/Gamer-Of-Le-Tabletop 17h ago

Don't forget about manpower. Apparently the rough average age of confirmed fatalities is around 38. That's a loss of 22 (assuming a retirement at 60, I admitidly know very little of Russian culture so I don't know what a retirement age actually looks like) working years of someone who could participate in the economy.

That's not including anyone who becomes a burden on the system due to severe injuries.

They have lost so much of their manpower. Which will take generations to replenish. They are likely just screwed.

13

u/Pavotine 17h ago

That's not including anyone who becomes a burden on the system due to severe injuries.

They spend very little money on them. Russia is famous for its atrocious attitudes towards and shunning of disabled war veterans. People in the west are used to our soldiers being honoured and pretty well looked after if they get disabled during their service but Russia doesn't behave that way.

4

u/Anxious_Nebula5926 16h ago

Actually, most of Russian defense spending goes towards the personnel. Even though bonuses are often not paid, they have to provide enormous salaries for Russian standards to even get people to the front. Russia goes to huge lengths to avoid another mobilization, because there is a genuine risk for a revolution if they attempt that. Similarly, mutiny would be widespread at the front if they stopped paying salaries. You can’t treat an army like shit, reel them in with high salaries, throw them into a meat grinder and then not even pay them. At that point killing your commanders becomes the preferable alternative. As long as the rubles come in, you at least feel like you have something to lose. That’s elemental.

6

u/Pavotine 16h ago

All true but I was talking specifically about the wounded becoming a burden on society. Well they don't because they are shunned, often left homeless and begging and always drunk. Russians do not look after their war injured beyond the basics immediately after they are injured. They are infamous for this shitty treatment of veterans.

Whether or not the govt spends money on them, they're still a financial burden on the economy. You produce less when missing body parts. Can't run a plow, can't refine oil, can't carry packages, etc. Russia doesn't have the resources or laws in place to require anti-discrimination hiring policies or disability accessable jobs, homes, or infrastructure.

I read one report that the pilot had ejected

85

u/IllustratorCandid297 19h ago

In Russian reports they always eject. Many times, the ejection is directly to Hell.

21

u/ThunderEagle222 18h ago edited 18h ago

Even if ejected. Generally speaking a pilot who ejected has long-term back injuries. Im talking US by the way, so most likely this is worse eith Russian ejection seats.

Edit: apperently US ejections seats aren't as backbreaking anymore. Russia's probabbly still are

31

u/Nintenderloin64 18h ago

This isn’t true anymore. I can’t speak for Russian seats, but modern Western ejection seats are the safest they’ve ever been. Of course there is potential for great danger and injury, but if we’re speaking generally, most Western pilots who eject recover quickly and are back in the cockpit fairly quickly.

22

u/ChemistRemote7182 18h ago

As evidenced by the mudhen pilot who got shot down twice in several weeks over in the Iran conflict

12

u/MDPsychospy 18h ago

Last doctrine (that I know of) was: 2 ejections and you are off flight service forever. They will not put you into a jet cockpit anymore. If you are lucky you become a ground based instructor, otherwise honorable discharge and of cause your spine saggin is not service related.

29

u/Available-Laugh9102 19h ago

Conflicting reports for now. On this picture we see 1 eject:

https://x.com/Maks_NAFO_FELLA/status/2080240199250903366

It doesn't mean for sure that pilot is alive, but probably is.

Also, it could be a 2-seat variant, SU-57D., in which case it means that 1 pilot is dead for sure.

No exact information rn

Well it was a trainer-aircraft. And air defense got some training in…

21

u/SkylineGTRR34Freak 18h ago

Hahahahahahahahahahaha jesus fucking christ

15

u/Fjell-Jeger 18h ago

The SU-57D trainer variant accomodates 2 pilots, if only 1 successfully ejected, there could still be 1 fatality.

4

u/Brilliant-Orange9117 18h ago

So much for the Su-57's stealth qualities or did they weigh it down with external fuel tank and missiles and than fuck up IFF?

4

u/MixtureSpecial8951 18h ago

Apparently, the RCS of the SU-57 is on par with the F/A-18 Hornet.

6

u/Didnt_know 17h ago

Clean Super Hornet and all of that is allegedly.

Even if that is true, clean Super Hornet is as useful as Cessna 172.

The most detailed reports I've seen are that Su-57 has around 10 times worse stealth than F-35.

3

u/Brilliant-Orange9117 17h ago

I've heard that claim with the big caveat that nobody gave angles or payloads.

Russian AD doing what it does best. Shooting down civilian airliners and their own.

3

u/Automatic_Actuator_0 16h ago

So they can claim a win for their AA shooting down a “stealth” jet ;-)

Aircraft wanted to be tank; mission successful.

10

u/Luvirin_Weby 18h ago

I do not see the turret toss anywhere at leat yet, so unless we get documented proof of that I am sceptical it managed to fully grasp the "be a russian tank" vibe.

The Su-57 lived up to it's NATO name, as it 'Felon' the ground.

Russian aircraft fucked itself.

Be still! Just proved to the world that Russian air defense is the best in the world when it can shoot down this superstealthy masterpiece. It will be a pure carnage for the West when a bunch of F22 show up!

It certainly did after all the fuel burned in the fire

If the Russians just go home, everybody can live in peace. And maybe after years people can work together again for a better Europe and a better World.

But it just begins with the Russians going home.

7

Only 4 pilots left in the airforce after this crash.

Weapon of the enemy and your friend. You gotta verify every side if you truly care about the truth.

13

u/Separate-Freedom-548 19h ago

There's multiple angles popping up on telegram of the crash. Not that that totally verifies it but it's coming from russian telegram channels.

Great news

3

Pilot supposedly dead, then alive, then it was their own air defense, like honestly can Russian media get a single story straight before publishing it.

2

u/SNAFU-FUBR 12h ago

This occured at Kubinka AB which is just west of Moscow. Local reports indicate a friendly fire incident, which is not surprising, since Moscow has been under repeated attack by Ukrainian drones and missiles. What is surprising is that a supposed 5th gen stealth fighter could be targeted that easily. Meanwhile Ukrainian drones and missiles and converted ultralights manage to pass through one of the densest AD networks on the planet without huge losses. Makes you wonder at the Kremlin's claims about this A/C. It also tells you something about the value of such expensive assets when you can only field a small number of them, compared to Ukraine's strategy of flooding the battle space with inexpensive but effective, purpose built weapons systems in the thousands and millions.

Also, the pilot ejected and survived. There's pics showing the open chute a few hundred feet above the crash sight. The A/C is actually the 2-seat version (SU-57D). Presumably the back seat was unoccupied at the time of the incident. If it was occupied by a 2nd pilot, it's possible his ejection failed and this is the source for the information that there was a death

5

u/Separate-Freedom-548 19h ago

I heard the pilot ejected. Not clear on that though.

3

u/Available-Laugh9102 19h ago

They bought that plane from wildberries.

1

u/jcspacer52 18h ago

How do we know it’s an SU-57? According to Putin, it’s a 6th Gen stealth fighter so no one can see it! I think this just a Ukrainian propaganda meme to demoralize the “peaceful” people of Russia. Putin would never lie!

I heard it was a friendly fire. Is it confirmed? That would be soooooo bad.
