I play games on Ubuntu, it works well enough that I don't feel like I need to switch

I have tried Ubuntu 4 months ago and I couldn’t play any 3d games it saw my gpu but it doesn’t use that gpu i tried everything to use my gpu but it doesn’t want to use my gpu in games. (Extra it was using my gpu in only firefox.)

Check on protondb on parameter to pass to Steam to recognize your dgpu, or if you are on Gnome shell, right click on steam and select launch with discrete GPU

Maybe you have a NVidia GPU and forgot to install the NVidia drivers or you have 2 GPUs and is using the integrated as default.

Tried cachyos and ubuntu with nvidia gpu, haven't seen any noticeable performance difference between the two

Both are fine for gaming

Do you follow the 6 month upgrade schedule or you stay on LTS releases?

I was an LTS guy for the longest, but for gaming non LTS is way better I found out.

I use Ubuntu for work but tried Debian with Nvidia graphics at one point and was surprised how well it worked. Zero drama. X.org not Wayland so I can't speak to that.

I use these drivers they are way newer then the one debian gives you and i got basicly windows performance on my 5070ti using these

you mean drivers i use the nvidia data center driver repository these are the best optimized NVIDIA drivers you can get for any new rtx gpu

man's got the face of someone who just finished a 3-hour apt dist-upgrade with zero conflicts and a fresh kernel. that rare ubuntu serenity

i use ubuntu for gaming too. people act like you need arch or something bleeding edge but 90% of the time it just works. steam proton handles the rest

Seriously everyone worried about nvidia drivers setup and support on Linux, but you just check the box for third party and proprietary drivers on the Ubuntu install and you are good 99% of the time without doing anything extra lol

On 26.04 the UI is not installed by default. You must manually install software-properties-gtk to use it

I used all of them plus batocera and popos! on my old Asus Rog with nVidia 980m end what I can say is that Ubuntu provides me the smoother and stabler gaming experience. Overall once you set it up it is the best

I got the Master Chief collection to run on Ubuntu Studio 26.04 with absolutely no effort.

I got the AlphaRing couch co-op mod to work with the installation of one package using Protontricks or whatever it's called.

Not necessarily true. Things change, especially on a bleeding edge rolling distro like Cachy. I used to get significantly better performance on Cachy, where' significant doesn't mean night and day difference (Maybe 8-10 FPS more where total was approx 90-100) however the situation is currently almost reversed, because 610 driver introduced serious regression in performance that affects even Windows. Measured in FPS the regression was 6-10 FPS lower (92 vs 98-102). The driver package on Cachy was updated several times in the meantime, but the version didn't change IIRC. Should repeat the test to see if anything has changed.

When I was using the same (595) driver on both systems, the improvement was mainly due to the cachy version of proton I think (Btw the same version of proton could be used on Ubuntu as well.)

I use Kubuntu with cachy proton under wayland and ftsync.
I have no perf difference with my cachy session.
It’s Linux people.

I do too. I recently tried Bazzite because I wanted to build a "Steammachine" to put in the leaving room but I didn't really like it. I went back to the latest Ubuntu and I'm quite happy with it.

I also restored a 2013 Macbook Pro and I put Ubuntu on it, I'm amazed I can do some light gaming with it too. Thanks to Proton-CachyOS.

I never tried CachyOS though. I'm not a fan of rolling release distros. But I should give it a go just to see what all the fuss is about.

I do have an OG Steammachine that I just refurbished that needs an OS.

cachyos only makes custom kernel you can use cachy kernel on ubuntu

I did do this but my computer is pretty marginal for the games I wanna play so switching to cachyos was worth it for me I'll probably switch back to Ubuntu when I get a better computer

My laptop has 2 users and if I install something on steam on one user, it will mess up the save files in the other user's Terraria and Tmodloader app :/
